    skill proficiencies point buy

I've definitely had that same thought, of making Perception just like Initiative -- a function of pure ability score, with only the occasional special ability or feat that would modify it. Or, classes could grant proficiency in Perception or Initiative the way they do saving throws. (I'd give...

    skill proficiencies point buy

The only one that I think is truly broken is Perception. In my experience, that gets rolled way more than any other skill (at some tables, it is rolled more than all other skills combined). And, it is super useful; it feels fun to spot an ambush/trap/clue, and it feels sucky to get surprised or...

What 5th edition books should I be buying?

If we are getting into digital, the best thing I've spent money on, by far, is ENWorld En5ider. There's a huge diversity of stuff there, most of it is very high-quality. The articles are just long enough to have some meat, while being short enough to digest easily.

What 5th edition books should I be buying?

Even if you don't have (or want) the Tactical Maps, I highly recommend the Tactical Maps Adventure Atlas. I just really love the format. Each location is given about 2 pages worth of details, and then another page or two of "scenarios," which are in between large encounters and small adventures...

D&D 5E (2014) Does the world exist for the NPC's?

Uhhhh, are you implying that your settings do exist? That you didn't just make them all up? That when a foul dragon named Scorulax the Murky dwells in the lower levels of Cleft-Rock Caverns, that those setting elements actually exist? Do they cease to exist when we start playing a campaign? Or...

D&D 5E (2014) Does the world exist for the NPC's?

No. The world does not exist. Period. Seriously, and I hate to break it to you this way, but... I just made it all up! It's not real! All those times I told you, "You don't detect any traps..." it's because there were no traps, there was no chest/door/hallway/whatever... In fact, and you may...

    D&D 5E (2014) So...keelboats

Well, for passenger size, the missing ingredient is, how do you convert cargo space to passenger space? If you turned the hold into more cabins, I'm guessing the sailing ship and the warship could transport a lot more people than the longship. There's actually a ship in Waterdeep: Dragon Heist...

Unarmed Striking RAW = simple melee weapon?

They could also make it clearer by having well-defined rules for natural weapons, e.g., "Natural weapons are part of a creature's body that it uses to attack. Natural weapons count as weapons for the purposes of attacking with them, but they are not objects and can't be affected as weapons (you...

Oh! I just saw your post here, where you already answer my questions about cutters. Thanks!

    D&D 5E (2014) So...keelboats

Great questions! 1. My intention was that the sloop statistics would handle all small sailboats of this type (even though many such sailboats are technically not "sloops"). It's like how you can use the statistics for a glaive to represent a wide variety of polearms. If we want to...

D&D 5E (2014) Does the world exist for the NPC's?

When I DM, I insist that 95% of all PCs be simple peasants who have zero capacity for adventuring. When a group of players shows up and every single one of the PCs is some kind of "dark elf bard" or "hill dwarf monk" or "silver dragonborn sorcerer" or some other unrealistic character that is...

    D&D 5E (2014) So...keelboats

That is amazing! I love it!!! Regarding the cog: later, larger cogs (like the Sea Ghost, presumably) did have a small forecastle. I'm open to making the cog a slightly smaller ship with no forecastle: the Sea Ghost already has a deck plan so all it really needs is statistics. Also the caravel...

    Campaign ideas ??? Help!!

The PCs sell "Dungeon Insurance" to remote villages in a points-of-light setting. If a village suffers a dungeon-related attack, the PCs pay out, at a loss -- but then they raid the dungeon and gain fabulous treasures! The whole insurance scheme is really just a way to locate active dungeons...

    Giving out More Feats

Are you limiting this to only those feats that give +1 to a score? Those feats tend to be the weakest, so I think it'll be fine. In fact it leaves you with this list: Athlete Actor Durable Heavily Armored Heavy Armor Master -- This one is actually really amazing at low levels Keen Mind Lightly...

    Giving out More Feats

Certain feats work well in combination, and with certain class features. The one that immediately jumped into my mind is sorlock or sorcadin, with booming blade, Polearm Master, and War Caster; or for that matter, just Polearm Master and Sentinel is also a powerful combo. (Both combos allow you...

What previous supplements would you like to see brought back for 5e?

Here's another one: I love how they've been converting classic modules into "anthology hardcovers," but I really want even shorter adventures. I would buy the :):):):) out of a 320-page "best of Dungeon Magazine."

Does the world exist for the PCs?

The real actual world is an incredibly broad, diverse setting, and also extremely realistic*. Yet, if you watch a TV show set in the modern day, that show is often set in some corner of world that just happens to be ideal for telling those kinds of stories. Dr. House is always getting weird...
