D&D General So what colour are your dwarfs and elfs?

I tried to respect differences by creating a spreadsheet of all the races and ethnicities, so I can distinguish by sight a Bedine human from a Imaskari human. It went down well. I had two players deliberately choose an ethnicity different to their own. One player picked a Turami human simply...

D&D General The Importance of Page 33

Players don't want to play "a particular race"; they want to play whatever it is you are not including. As soon as you exclude monks, the player who has played five fighters and paladins will suddenly want to play a monk. No underdark races in your game? The person who always plays humans now...

D&D General Breaking Out of "Default Actions"

I struggle with this one. I have a player of a wizard who oftend finished an entire adventuring day with the same spell slots they started with, having done nothing but firebolt. I'm honestly not sure how to deal with it, or even if I should be delaing with it.

D&D 5E (2014) Are "evil gods" necessary? [THREAD NECRO]

That depends on what the gods actually are and what they represent. If they maintain spheres on influence then evil ones are required. There has to be a god of murder,a a god of deceit, and so on. If they don't, then they don't. For example, in my last game there were 10 gods. None of them...

    D&D 5E (2014) Decoupling ancestry and culture

I am a big fan of this idea. Species: Determines biological things, like seeing in the dark or being tough or having wings. Childhood: Determines things learnt in the child's formative years. Languages, skills, perhaps innate magic, probably not tool proficiencies (they seem like things only...

    D&D 5E (2014) Swashbuckler/warlock multi class

Having played in a game with this combination, I agree, yes it is powerful for the warlock. However, it almost completely screws over the rest of the party. The casters can't cast half their spells (the ones with "that you can see"). The archers are firing blind, guessing squares, risking...

D&D 5E (2014) Mysteries, Zone of Truth, and Savvy Players?

Remember that zone of truth does not compel anyone to talk. If the person being questioned doesn't like the PCs, or mistrusts them, then it is fair for them to just shut their mouth and shake their head. Or maybe they just like privacy. Or perhaps they are guilty of something else unrelated and...

D&D 5E (2014) Balance at high levels - and a possible house rule

In my limited experience, wizards don't vastly overshadow fighters at high levels because of money. In our high level game, the high level casters were always tight on money. Every single casting seemed to be preceeded by a discussion of "how much diamond dust do we have?" or "Can we afford...

    D&D 5E (2014) Is Neil Gaiman Wrong?

Normal people have been fighting crocodile- and elephant-sized creatures for thousands of years. Granted, they couldn't fly or breathe fire, but mammoths and rhinos were all pretty monstrous to pre-industrial peoples. Those peoples still hunted them.

D&D 5E (2014) Are there actions not covered under a skill?

I don't think I'd describe it as pedantic, since there is no such thing as a skill check. The PHB doesn't use the phrase "skill check" anywhere (or the phrase "tool check"). Like Charlaquin, I don't use the phrase "skill check" because using it leads to the situation this thread is talking...

    D&D 5E (2014) Tired of doing WotC's job

Cool. Can I have your stuff? :-P To answer those questions: No. No. Because the only thing dispel magic does is stop currently-running spells. No - the first time the character is aware something is wrong with them is when they wake up naked in a ditch, covered in blood, and with ten hours of...

D&D General Adventuring gear "in real life" - the Highlands

I've subscribed to that channel for a while. As a modern-day hiker, I find the videos of "lower tech" practitioners really interesting. As a fantasy RPG player, it intrigues me how important gear really is. If the characters with only five things written on their character sheets actually tried...

    D&D 5E (2014) Levitate is a save-or-die spell

Only for the initial casting. :)

    D&D 5E (2014) Levitate is a save-or-die spell

Yes, you can. The stone immediately rises 20 feet up and continues on its way, almost certainly missing you. Since its altitude doesn't change, it flies a long way, probably out of sight. When your turn comes around you can change its altitude, though you'll be doing it by guesswork since you...

    D&D General Next Generation VTT

That's the top of my list. I want the digital tool to be as quick at creating encounters as I am with markers and a battlemap. Digitiser tablet and pen support is also pretty high on the list. It would be great if a tool supported modular dungeons (like the sort of pieces DM Scotty creates with...

    D&D 5E (2014) Banishment and swallowed creatures

Yes, that is the situation we were in in a game last year. If the purple worm was banished for 10 rounds, the swallowed character was looking at taking 40d6 acid damage.

    D&D 5E (2014) Banishment and swallowed creatures

Maybe not (which is why this is an important question). After 10 rounds incapacitated in the belly of a purple worm the paladin will probably pop back in dead.

D&D General Hey, are we all cool with having to buy the same book twice, or what?

Yes, they do. Making content available in an easily-shared format leads to more theft and fewer sales. That is an expense to a company. I imagine WOTC's decision takes this expense into account, along with all of the other legal, ecomonic and technical issues with digital publishing.

D&D General VTT that supports a pen?

almost none of which work with a digitiser pen and tablet.

D&D General VTT that supports a pen?

Are there any virtual tabletop tools that support drawing with a tablet pen? I know I can put something together in paint, but it seems like a lot of effort to draw something offline and then spend the time uploading it, then trying to align it to a grid, simply for some quick encounter. TIA
