D&D 5E (2014) Invisible Objects and Spell Effects under RAW

Really? I, for one, do like the rule. It means that fighting invisible creatures is actually possible, instead of being a frustrating, no-fun experience. Imagine: GM: Something invisible hits you. Player: I hit it back. GM: You can't, because you don't know where it is. It hits you. Player: I...

2000AD Check out this map of Judge Dredd's Cursed Earth

It's a nice touch that the lakes and seas are brown.

D&D General How did/do you make your THAC0 attacks rolls?

I didn't like THAC0 so I invented a system called HABL where positive numbers were good and negative numbers were bad. It was pretty much the BAB system, before D&D used that.

D&D 5E (2014) The "everyone at full fighting ability at 1 hp" conundrum

QFT. In a real fight, it's usually not who gets the last hit that wins; it's who gets the first decent hit. Then it's all over except for the stomping. This is not fun in a cinematic game (or movie, for that matter).

The Two Greatest Things in Life Are Finally Together (Hint: Star Wars)

I;ve just looked around my room here, I can see action figures, books, a Star Wars pencil case (with Star Wars Edge of the Empire dice in it). Sotrmtrooper themes notebooks, and so on. Hi everyone. My name is Greenstone and I have a problem.

    D&D 5E (2014) Stargate D&D 5e details from gencon

That is a great point. I'm jealous that I didn't think of it.

    D&D 5E (2014) Stargate D&D 5e details from gencon

One that doesn't have magic built in to every single class. Dungeons & Dragons is fantastical. Even medium level characters are superheroes. Magic is inconsistent and unexplained (and maybe unexplainable) and has few drawbacks or costs. The Hit Points mechanic means characters can take enormous...

    D&D 5E (2014) Stargate D&D 5e details from gencon

You know, if someone asked me, 'What game system to run Stargate in?" I don't think D&D would have been my first pick.

D&D 5E (2014) Eldritch Blast and Repelling Blast - One time or Each Hit?

Spells that are either hit or save almost always either do damage or move you. If you want to Shove, you need to give up an attack's damage. Telekinesis moves someone but doesn't damage them. Eldritch blast does damage and moves you, for one dice roll and zero spell slots. A creature could...

D&D 5E (2014) Eldritch Blast and Repelling Blast - One time or Each Hit?

I do each hit, for both players and foes. Any rule like this works both ways. Characters standing on the edge of a cliff need to beware flying opponents with thorn whip. That is a really good point. Shoving is a contested ability check, as are the Bigby's hand and telekinesis spells. The...

D&D 5E (2014) PHB Errata Nerf Unarmed Strikes!? WHY??? :(

Another difference between unarmed attacks (and also natural weapons) and actual weapons is that weapons can be disarmed. A battlemaster fighter can cause you to drop your sword; they can't really make you drop your feet or horns. A jailer can confiscate your dagger but not your fists. Some...

D&D 5E (2014) "Unstoppable" new reaction introduced in Descent?

It would certainly annoy the player of the paladin who just smited their last spell slot on a critical to do 100 points of radiant daamge, only to hear the GM say, "The creature takes no damage."

D&D 5E (2014) Does a broom of flying take an action to activate?

I'd rule that it takes the Use An Object Action to unstrap it and get it ready for use. To use it, you must mount just like a riding animal, which costs movement instead of an Action. To balance the power of flight, you might rule (as does my current GM) that while riding it you need to use one...

D&D General Worlds of Design: Chaotic Neutral is the Worst

I agree. Personality is what a character does; not what a player writes. If a character is doing evil things with no remorse, they are evil. The player might have written "CN" on the piece of paper but that doesn't matter. If a player writes "Trait: Generous" but then always plays their...

    D&D General Power and Society

Oops, I meant to type another paragraph afterwards but missed it out. A 20th level adventurer has part of what they need - the raw power - but to get the power base of allies, they will have to spend time building their network. Usually, adventurers can't or won't spend this time. The Evil Bad...

    D&D General Power and Society

I take the simplistic view that to have power in society you need two things: actual power and people power (friends, allies, cronies, whatever). The powerful sorcerer might have the actual power to defeat the palace guards and kill the current ruler, but if they don't have a number of people...

D&D General How Was Your Last Session?

The flying bard and wizard chased the bad guy up a long ladder and out of view. The (non-flying, non-climbing, slow-walking) dwarf cleric and dwarf ranger spent several turns setting things on fire.

D&D 5E (2014) When will WotC support unlinking abilities and skills?

It's a variant rule in the PHB, in chapter 7. It mentions Constitution (Athletics) and Strength (Itimidation).
