D&D General Name your favorite 4 person party composition.

4 halfling bards. Scary, Sporty, Baby and Ginger.

D&D General why do we have halflings and gnomes?

I have gnomes and halflings in my game because they illustrate two completely opposite ways of dealing with outsiders. When humans expanded into formerly gnome or hin territory, the gnomes responded by retreating and hiding. A Gnome community might be only a few miles from a human village, but...

D&D 5E (2014) Races with floating bonuses: Designing from scratch

I'd remove floating attribute bonuses entirely. A floating bonus is just the same as more points. For exmaple, give everyone 31 points to buy attributes. If you want to be an elf, cool, you're an elf. You can see in the dark.

D&D General How many Races it too much?

In my experience, it doesn't matter how many races you have; players want what's not there. Or they will take something gonzo and then complain about it. For example, I ran a human-centric game (the dwarves were almost extinct, the elves were lotus-eaters, other races were extremely rare). The...

    D&D 5E (2014) Shield Saltiness

"Hey, town guard/lackey of the Burgomeister. I don't know if you've noticed but there are —ing werewolves roaming the streets of your town at night! A saber-toothed tiger escaped from a zoo last week. That house over there used to hold a cult of evil murderers (you are welcome, by the way). A...

D&D 5E (2014) Getting rid of bad skill proficiencies

I think charisma is the appropriate stat because being strong isn't scary, unless you have the will to actually back up your threats. If I don't believe you are willing to go through with it then it doesn't matter how much you wave a club or juggle a dagger across your knuckles. I'm not...

    D&D 5E (2014) How fantastic are natural 1's?

Why are you only allowed to create fantaistic stories 5% of the time?

D&D 5E (2014) Where in FR do you want the next big adventure book to go?

My first preference, The Unapprochable East. I like the Sword Coast, but I figure it is a bit done to death. There are some really interesting features to the countries of the East, that take us away from the city-state, rather vanilla, setting of the West. For a start, there are countries...

D&D 5E (2014) How much is a ton in Ghosts of Saltmarsh?

1 ton is 160 stone or 80 tood Does that help?

Well, there's Baldurs Gate III completed in five minutes. :-)

D&D 5E (2014) Monsters charming PCs during combat

Yes, the spell slot is spent when the spell is readied, as are all of its components. You also might not have noticed that readying a spell requires concentration. That bard won't be using bless or cause fear or anything else that requires concentration. I would be dealing with the situation...

    D&D 5E (2014) Material components

I figure that I wouldn't let someone attack without a weapon, or shoot a bow without arrows, or have a high AC without actually having armour, or open a lock without any tools, so why do spellcasters get a free pass?

    D&D 5E (2014) Bad Sage Advice?

Makes sense to me. Compelled duel is an enchantment spell. It is affecting your mind. You are not being physically constrained, you are being mentally controlled.

    D&D 5E (2014) Surprise and Sneak Attack

It doesn't support any other idea either, which is why Sage dvice clarified it. In your game, shadowoflameth, when does a combatant stop being surprised? What rules justification do you use for your ruling?

    D&D 5E (2014) Surprise and Sneak Attack

Begin and end with the fiction. Something has alerted the target. Maybe a slight sound, perhaps a smell, maybe just some premonition of danger. What do they do? If they are a guard, maybe the call out for reinforcements. Maybe they start patrolling. Perhaps they draw their weapons and ready an...

D&D 5E (2014) Yes, I know what RAW says, but, Effects of allowing Sneak Attack on Monk attacks.

Its been discussed a lot on the web. They were never supposed to be on the table in the first place. Weapon enchantments (for example the magic weapon spell) and smites and similar features are not supposed to be used on fists and feet and elbows and horns, etc.

D&D 5E (2014) And just like that, no one cares about Frostmaiden any longer

I never cared about Frostmaiden in the first place…

D&D General Moar Greyhawk: Anthropocentrism and Humanity in Greyhawk

I think that's the real problem right there - that many players want to have all the numbers and abilities that go with race/species/whatever, but don't (can't? aren't willing?) accept what else comes with it. Anecdote: I ran a game set in a very human-dominated world (for example, less than...

D&D General Beholders and anti magic

There is nothing in the monster stat block that says golems are magical or created magically. Just that "the golem’s creator infuses it with a spirit…" There is a magic item called the manual of golems that suggests magic is involved (using words like "eldritch" but nothing to say that this is...

D&D 5E (2014) Is Intimidate the worse skill in the game?

I wonder if that is an issue because GMs are not roleplayingt the consequences of diplomacy? Sure, you can sweet-talk the guard into letting you pass, but you've now left behind someone who feels maybe betrayed or faithless. Or maybe they get greedy and come at you later, asking for more bribe...
