My general favourite to DM is probably early medieval, with a tech level of around 1066, so ruling out any form of gunpowder as well as plate armour and similar. That said, I’ll happily play in Victoriana settings and in the pseudo-Renaissance of Warhammer Fantasy.

I second @Snarf Zagyg ’s proposal with enthusiasm and to go with it: A mega-adventure set in and around the Yatil Mountains, made up of several new adventures which encompass Caverns of Tsojcanth and Temple of Tharizdun, with Tharizdun being the BBEG for the whole adventure.

Really liked this edition. At the time, I was writing a degree dissertation on Eorl Godwin of Wessex and reading a lot of primary sources in Old English, so the Anglo-Saxon character names article was good fun.

The characters had all fought in the Greyhawk Wars as young soldiers, just as the wars were ending. About eight months later, their former commander, now marshal of the much-depleted forces of Sterich, called upon them to assist with some raids by hill giants.

For me: A 50th Anniversary “Return to”- style of adventure, featuring a 5e update of Caverns of Tsojcanth and Temple of Tharizdun, with surrounding adventures linking to a Tharizdun-based overarching threat. Probably with a redemption arc for Drelzna as an NPC.

I played in a FR game once where the DM had Drizzt show up frequently to “rescue” us. Absolutely hated the game and it put me off FR to a significant extent.

A dashing young cavalry officer just returned from an overseas war could figure as an NPC. Equally, a group of ragged, ex-soldiers all returned from the aforementioned war and thrown into destitution and banditry; an adversary group that raises moral questions.
