    AD&D 1E Favorite Obscure Rules from TSR-era D&D

Of course it's arbitrary, or rather, it isn't arbitrary if there's a point behind the specific selection chosen. Other games (that keep to ~6 ability scores) work in as diverse concepts as Luck, Perception, Initiative, or Self into the "core" abilities. I could completely see Gygax & Co...

    OSR OSR News Roundup

https://www.enworld.org/threads/osr-news-roundup.684824/ This is just a link for those searching for, or filtering by, the "OSR" tag, so they see the news roundup thread, which is labeled "D&D older editions" but not "osr". Cheers

    Not an unreasonable simplification?

    AD&D 1E Favorite Obscure Rules from TSR-era D&D

The 5E writers could learn from this. Having your heroes actually fear the darkness is a great thing, and there is no good reason to just do away with this, as 5E has done (for all practical purposes).

    AD&D 1E Favorite Obscure Rules from TSR-era D&D

I would say that if your game only has a couple of numbers that define the entirety of your physical, mental and spiritual state, a score to define how beautiful or attractive you are simply doesn't cut it. But the core idea, that surface attractiveness is not the same thing as charisma and...

    D&D 5E (2024) What Should D&D 2024 Have Been +

The short answer is: you don't need to worry, not about this anyway. Guides dont make situational spells like Water Breathing red. Red means the spell is irredeemably bad, or worse, tricks the newbie into believing it is better than it really is (given reasonable campaign assumptions).

    D&D 5E (2024) What Should D&D 2024 Have Been +

A different thing I don't think 2024 D&D will accomplish, or even attempt: Make sure spells don't do the specialist's job better than the specialist. Just to give a single example: if a martial character (such as a Rogue) wants to become a master sneaker, the obviously superior approach is to...

    D&D 5E (2024) What Should D&D 2024 Have Been +

Exactly. The sky blue (or gold, or whatever) spells are just as bad for the game as are deep red spells.

    D&D 5E (2024) What Should D&D 2024 Have Been +

Casters definitely don't need the massive upgrade which is to improve every spell rated average or less. Spells should not all be blue or sky blue. (Per definition, having every point in a data set be above average is even mathematically impossible, but I digress) This is starting to turn into...

    D&D 5E (2024) What Should D&D 2024 Have Been +

Or green, or whatever color that represents a spell that is just "fine" or "medium". Or even purple. (I can't tell if you're serious, but just so we are on board: sure you see you can't have a set of spells where all of them are better than average. Right?) What specifically isn't useful to...

    D&D 5E (2024) What Should D&D 2024 Have Been +

What? Remove the ability for a powergamer to scour the internet for some obscure third-party monster and then convince their DM to allow it? ;) You have a good suggestion. After all, the point of paying WotC for rules is that THEY do the work. So I'm totally okay with WotC deciding to go...

Revisiting AI as a GM Support Tool

Get back to us next week... ;) AI development is a hyper frenzy right now. We're just starting. Every model you can use today will seem like a child's toy tomorrow.

Revisiting AI as a GM Support Tool

Let's be honest. A rpg adventure plot doesn't have to be fantastic, or deep, or unique, for the players to have a lot of fun for days on end. Everybody will likely be using AI as a GM support tool very soon now.

D&D General New Interview with Rob Heinsoo About 4E

I wouldn't blame 4E's failure on the setting. First off, I think the PF2 sales numbers would qualify as failure to WotC. Conversely, I think Paizo would have been happy with 4E's numbers. No, after having thought about why, after initially liking both games, I ultimately rejected both of...

    D&D 5E (2024) What Should D&D 2024 Have Been +

Make all subclasses begin at the same level, and pay a thought to mixing classes and subclasses, so that a Rogue or Ranger can take the Champion subclass, for instance. (It's fine if this compatibility work only extends to Martial, Arcane and Divine classes. For instance, if it's a bit wonky if...

OSR Looking for a set of OSR rules with more (more granular) combat options?

There just aren't many good options if you want the OSR ethos and still like mechanical crunch. DCC is one of the crunchier OSR-adjacent options out there, but unfortunately, most if not all of the crunch that separates it from the much more common D&D-light OSR games out there is completely...

    General DCC RPG thread

I just wish they didn't go all out with the mechanical explosion of details. They wanted magic to be less predictable than in D&D. Fine. But changing EVERY parameter, for all spells, for all castings? Buries all the fun under a mountain of niggling detail :( If you're okay with the game...

    General DCC RPG thread

They have basically not changed the rules for ever. There are still inconsistencies and unclear passages. People asked about them over and over again, always given the same response where the reps appeared weirdly proud over writing unclear and ambiguous rules :( Pro-Tip: Leaving rules unclear...
