D&D General The 13th Age 2nd Edition Kickstarter Has Launched

The problem with PF2 isn't chiefly that it offers more crunch, but that it's crunch is empty calories. There's a lot of crunch, but very few instances where the game trust the player to make meaningful choices. Mostly the crunch boils down to incredibly controlled and limited "do you want +1 to...

D&D General The 13th Age 2nd Edition Kickstarter Has Launched

Is it just me, or does the timing feel off? This year is all about 2024 5th Edition. Once we have tried that, we're easily in 2025 if not 2026. That would be a great time for a new edition of a game professing to be a D&D alternative. Now? Not sure I'll remember to check out a game that...

Free League Opens Pre-Orders for Dragonbane: Path of Glory

Ah, "Ärans Väg". That's some serious old-skoolery right there.

    D&D 5E (2014) Assaying rules for 5E E6 (Revised)

I used negative HP in one campaign. (Capped to -10 at the bottom) Ultimately the "gain Exhaustion" rule (together with Exhaustion= -1) is much more elegant, accomplishing the same design goal in a simpler less fiddly better way.

    D&D 5E (2014) Assaying rules for 5E E6 (Revised)

My DM simply went with whatever his source used. Not impacting passive values (i.e. only applying the penalty to d20 rolls) does help avoiding the death spiral phenomenon. But again, if combat is something to avoid rather than the reward it is in default D&D, you can absolutely experiment with...

    D&D 5E (2014) Assaying rules for 5E E6 (Revised)

In D&D you are just as awesome and effective with 1 HP as 100 HP. Either a healing spell heals you a significant amount of healing or it can just as well heal a single point. The advantage of a 7 or 11 point heal over a 2 or 3 point heal are minuscule in practical play. NB. Hope everybody are...

    D&D 5E (2014) Assaying rules for 5E E6 (Revised)

I was the player not DM, but yes. As opposed to the original unplayable Exhaustion rules, everyone can reasonably be expected to carry on with a -1 penalty. If you're hit with -2 you really feel exposed and vulnerable, and given the chance, you would reasonably argue the group should stop and...

    D&D 5E (2014) Assaying rules for 5E E6 (Revised)

Apologies for not cutting out the part I'm not responding to. In the last campaign I played in, the DM used a rule I believe he got from one if the splatbooks. Exhaustion levels each give -1 to all checks, rolls and saves (but not passive values). The penalty is cumulative. To this, add...

D&D 5E (2014) Why is There No Warlord Equivalent in 5E?

At 53 pages, definitely gonna last six days ..

D&D 5E (2014) Who tried to end the OGL?

Don't call it a stupid mistake. The driving forces behind the attempt are still there, unchanged.

D&D 5E (2014) Who tried to end the OGL?

If the CEO of WotC wasn't in on a particular decision that would be a real story. Obviously the CEO was informed about and at the very least not opposed to the decision. Those charitables appear to not understand how businesses are run. You don't micromanage individual decisions of your...

D&D 5E (2014) Why is There No Warlord Equivalent in 5E?

This is obviously unsound reasoning. Anyone liking this post for how it convinces itself the Warlord cannot be done should retract that like. Obviously it can be done. Anything else is just POV-pushing. Again, the reason WotC gas not made a Warlock can be many and varied. But "it's impossible"...

D&D 5E (2014) Why is There No Warlord Equivalent in 5E?

One system that, despite all its faults, offered a cool and useful take on this issue was 1st edition Symbaroum! Meaning you could definitely create the smart or charismatic fighter - a fighter with those mental stats as their "prime" stat

Actually, I would say it helps... if we're discussing why and how this thread is so alive and vibrant ;)

    General DCC RPG thread

Not to mention switching to a decidedly crappier tool. The discussion forum is far superior to any form of social media when it comes to detailed intricate discussions of several different topics at once. I detest the trend towards discussing RPGs on Reddit or Discord.

D&D 5E (2014) Why is There No Warlord Equivalent in 5E?

Yes, of course. The important part is: are you able to see the corrollary? The reason WotC is going with its "we will only approve concepts which clear an arbitrary hurdle that massively favors a minority of disaffected playtest responders" policy is precisely because they are not interested...

D&D 5E (2014) Why is There No Warlord Equivalent in 5E?

That's an awfully passive-aggressive way of putting it. In reality, 4E has just crashed and burned as the least popular edition. What would be more natural than making sure the new deal distances itself from the old? WotC could not afford anyone going "the new edition is just more of 4E" and...

D&D 5E (2014) Why is There No Warlord Equivalent in 5E?

After 18 pages (!!) I guess you need to add one to make 54 different attempts... Let's see how long this particular thread lasts. Could be more than six days; it was quite a while since everybody got the opportunity to declare their vision the only acceptable path forward ;) No but seriously...
