    D&D 5E (2014) Where are the PDFs?

I absolutely feel WotC is making a terrible business decision. Further, given the circumstances under which they pulled the 4E PDFs, I do believe it to be driven by the misguided belief that not selling PDFs will somehow curb piracy. Can I absolutely prove that? Of course not. The thing is...

    D&D 5E (2014) Where are the PDFs?

Not paying for something I've already done myself? I realize you didn't...it's just that's where things typically go next.

    D&D 5E (2014) Where are the PDFs?

First, re-framing my desire for PDFs so as to make it appear infantile is a pretty underhanded tactic. Second, I absolutely won't buy a PDF after I go to the considerable effort of creating my own -- at that point, it's a matter of principle. But if you really wanted to argue that I'm...

    D&D 5E (2014) Where are the PDFs?

I've purchase two copies of the PHB; one for myself and one for my wife. And while I obviously can't speak for anyone else, I would absolutely also buy a PDF copy; I find PDFs and hard copy to be supplementary goods, not substitute goods. For example, I own 13th Age, C&C, Pathfinder, Fate...

    D&D 5E (2014) Where are the PDFs?

I'm going to have to do the same. Which means WotC's refusal to sell 5E PDFs has accomplished exactly two things: 1. Inconveniencing me; and 2. Depriving them of revenue. That definitely sounds like the optimal outcome. :hmm:

    D&D 5E (2014) Where are the PDFs?

Only that isn't what I did. I expressed my personal desire, and then went on to explain why I think it is ALSO a mistake. The argument that "only WotC as sufficient information to make a correct decision" is patently false. First, no one has perfect information. Second, they clearly got 4E...

    D&D 5E (2014) Where are the PDFs?

I'm not entirely sure how that could possibly be accomplished in a way that wouldn't be immediately cracked -- after all, the client can only decrypt something if it has the key. That said, if that is the intended usage model -- as technically naive as it is -- I can live with that. I just...

    D&D 5E (2014) Where are the PDFs?

I do; just not in the format I greatly prefer. I sincerely hope you're right. But given that the 4E PDF debacle was explicitly a (hilariously misguided) response to piracy, I'm not holding my breath.

    D&D 5E (2014) Where are the PDFs?

Probably not, unless they go to great pains to make it so. Besides, if it weren't about control, they would just release PDFs. The world is going digital, and PDFs are the industry standard. Look, I really like 5E. I want it to succeed. Then again, I really liked 4E, and we all know how...

    D&D 5E (2014) Where are the PDFs?

Umm...literally the entire industry offers PDFs, except WotC. Do you think they do that because they don't make money? Look, I get that this is basically a D&D fan site, and people are going to fight the good fight, but come on. PDFs aren't some crazy cutting edge thing any more.

    D&D 5E (2014) Where are the PDFs?

With all due respect, I'll believe it when I see it. Given the fate of the "Character Visualizer" and the VTT for 4th edition, are you actually going to suggest my skepticism is unwarranted? If you want to write my opinion off as "rage-quitting," so be it, but I think I'll "merely" send my...

    D&D 5E (2014) Where are the PDFs?

Do I want PDFs? Absolutely. Me and many, many others. But that isn't why I don't think they have a clue. I think they don't have a clue because clinging to a dead-tree publishing model in the 21st centurey is clueless. I would have thought the failure of 4E would have made for a sharp...

Their books, their choice. That just means that D&D (again) becoming my system of choice is also very unlikely.

    D&D 5E (2014) Where are the PDFs?

Please. They're going to be on file-sharing sites anyway. All not selling them does is screw over people who won't pirate them. If they haven't figured this out yet, the "people who matter" don't have a clue.

    D&D 5E (2014) Where are the PDFs?

Also, my Internet connection is super flaky, and I seem to have double-posted. Any way to get these threads merged? :p

    D&D 5E (2014) Where are the PDFs?

Given that I buy both anyway, I'd have absolutely zero problem with that. But I agree...the silence does not bode well. Frankly, I think it's a pretty good sign that the (empty) suits are still ultimately in charge. :(

    D&D 5E (2014) Where are the PDFs?

No apology necessary. Though I'm more exasperated and dumbfounded than I am hysterical. Did they learn nothing from 4E?

    D&D 5E (2014) Where are the PDFs?

So...the PHB was officially released yesterday but, still no PDFs. Not even a straight answer on PDFs. In fact, WotC seem to be pretending PDFs don't exist. This is 2014. A substantial chunk of the market is going partially or fully digital, making the lack of PDFs is a deal-killer for...
