For me it really depends on the quality of the game offered by the DM. Sadly our current game is halfway though Revenge of the Giants, and we can't possibly get done with it fast enough IMO. I despise the combat treadmill of WotC "adventures." A clever, original, or imaginative game setting...

DMG2 has rules for companion characters, kinda a halfway point between a monster/NPC and a character. Really useful for lots of things IMO. ;) If you can't afford that at the moment just give him a monster buddy like a lower level human wizard or a pet wolf.

Open Grave has rules for a Throng of medium or larger monsters, this would probably be a good place to start. Works like a swarm but bigger and immune to forced movement unless delivered by a blast or burst. Perhaps give them some bonus to defense, and blast or burst effects should do more...

You are the DM, feel free to redefine rests. I'm doing the same thing for my current campaign. A short rest is 6 hours, an extended rest is about a week's downtime in a secure location. The world is a scary place, especially at night. :devil:

I think this could be implemented on the DM's side without any changes to the PCs. Just figure out a damage level for the PC's. Anything below that level is one wound, above is two. Add +1 for a crit or daily power. I would use Old School Hack as a base myself, although I just like that...

I really have to say this is the first "old school" system I could really see playing. The updated stuff is nice, I could find most of that before but had to dig through the site to find them, having the monster rules and all in one document is even better. :D

I would think you could reskin bits as familiars. Depending on what system you are using I would reskin the Primitive Subroutines from Tron 2.0 as weapons (and everyone should have a disk, even if they can't use it well.) The combat/defense/utility subroutines could be remade as feats for D20...
