My best advice after running a group that were new to 4e (and D&D for that matter) from level 1-3 is, don't setup elaborate plans for the first couple of levels. Use level one (and perhaps two as well) as a "training ground" walking them (and yourself) through the basics of combat, things like...
There are a couple of simple solutions for equalizing the power level of a companion character vs a standard PC.
1.) Just go ahead and give them dailies. CCs don't have them because they shouldn't overshadow the PCs. If you have a player as one this isn't really a problem.
2.) If the player...

I have had parties before that almost killed a replacement character because "how did he know we were here?" And these guys claim they don't want to play Paranoia...
Honestly I'm not suprised he's taking from video games, I do the same thing. I've seen some very clever dungeon based puzzles in video games over the years, while sadly it seems like searching for D&D related ones only get you a Rube Goldberg TPK.
Did one session as a trial run with pre-gen characters, some of the players liked it, others hated it. Went back to the drawing board, walked the ones that didn't like it thought the character creation process and let them build characters with me and other experienced players helping them with...
Or Batman. He's totally a martial controller. ;)
Actually 4th ed already has a martial controller, just not a character. The Hobgoblin Fleshcarver in MM2 is a controller armed with both a polearm and poisoned darts. That could be a decent basis for a new class IMO. Although my Batman idea...
My reference to Firefly is more about the crew as a whole, or the jobs they pull. It's not just breaking the more annoying Alliance laws like taking the cargo from a dead freighter, they have little problem with grand theft or assault and they regularly kill people for money or favors. Mal...
Verys: I'm actually doing just that for a generic dungeon crawl game I'm building to play with my son. Since he picks characters according to the rule of cool, I have to be able to deal with a party that consists of ninjas, jedi and little green army men. :D
I guess I just can't understand how people still can't grasp the concept of playing morally gray characters without immediately either becoming "Natural Born Killers" or twirling a black mustache. This just strikes me as bad RP  Hasn't anyone here played Grand Theft Auto? Or watched the...
In response to the OP, yes totally. I would recommend Hard Boiled Armies as I'm planning large scale armed conflict in our campaign, and it covers almost everything I needed with minimal extra work on my part.
Well, I tried this in our last game session. Our former GURPS players all loved it, although one of my two hardcore DnD guys flat out told me he didn't like it at all. So I rolled as normal for him, let the other guys roll their defenses, and everyone seemed happy. :)
I use both the updated standard SC and stalker0's, it really depends on how I want the SC to go. Quick and dirty SC's gets the core rules, anything big and complex gets the Obsidian treatment.
@RigaMortus2: here's the link...
This looks like a great idea for my group, as I was burnt out on running GURPS and pulled them to 4e (some minor kicking and screaming involved.) :D
One of the few complaints about 4e so far is that they don't get to roll for defense like they are used to. This mod would allow the players to...
I've seen several people here that already use hexes in D&D, and there are a few quick conversions floating around, so it isn't too hard, at least for an outdoors setting. For old school dungeon rooms/corridors it would be a bit problematic though.
I used this over the weekend, and gotta say it worked much better than the little notecards I'd been using, anything that takes up less space behind the screen is welcome. Awesome work!
Well, for example we ran a Wierd War 2 campaign for the last 3 years. Nazi soldiers are laughable mooks, even SS; they were never any kind of threat, even at platoon or company strength plus heavy weapons. When characters actually use cover, are really trained at their primary weapon (and in...
This. That and many other reasons that have mirrored many people's complaints of D&D 3e is why I am dragging my group away from GURPS into D&D 4e. I'm tired of building a big bad NPC for hours in the GUPRS character creation system for a PC to "one shot kill" with a master strike to the eye...
I've got the same problem for a character of mine. I'm just going to go ahead and create a new implement/weapon based on a songblade, but as a songbow instead. Sadly Wizards didn't include any such items in the Arcane book, so you will either have to deal with swapping out a bow with a wand...
