Kyle Brink Interviewed by Teos Abadia (Alphastream) on OGL, WotC, & D&D

This is a good thing to check periodically. I just checked mine and saw a whole list of people whose names have been crossed out so I guess ignoring them might have been the right call.

1.1/Terms Signature Leak, it was a draft?

I was going to respond to this when you asked about it the other day. The signature thing confuses me - the OGL doesn't need a signature. I assumed where folks were talking about signatures it was about the "sweetheart deal" that gave creators better terms than the new OGL would have. Did that...

Kyle Brink Interviewed by Teos Abadia (Alphastream) on OGL, WotC, & D&D

Except that the McD's example actually does show that sales and quality do correlate, just not in a 1-1 fashion. Sales at the level that McDonald's operates at don't correlate with "excellence" it correlates with "a consistent quality product that is 'good enough' for the average consumer". You...

D&D 5E (2014) Amazon has sale on some of the 5e books + buy 2 books and save 50% on 1 of the two.

Likely the formula Amazon is using includes their own inventory numbers and what they can reorder. Maybe Tomb has fewer copies available at the distributor and is heading towards a new printing while the others are more easily restocked?

Kyle Brink (D&D Exec Producer) On OGL Controversy & One D&D (Summary)

At one level this is true. But at the other level remember who put together that list. They're not that bright and IIRC not everyone who was tagged with "green" or "yellow" is actually someone who puts out games with sexist or racist tropes. It's just someone who they could put those colors on...

D&D 5E (2014) Amazon has sale on some of the 5e books + buy 2 books and save 50% on 1 of the two.

This^ D&D is in the news and so Amazon is capitalizing on it. It may be someone consciously pulling the trigger or it might just be that the Google News alerts for Dungeons and Dragons hit a level where some bot decided it was time to make a sale (I suspect the former more than the latter - I...

Kyle Brink (D&D Exec Producer) On OGL Controversy & One D&D (Summary)

The Native racist caricatures hit me at the time because I lived in the West so they were obvious to me. But like I said it was all worse than I remembered when I went back to read it. I think part of it comes from the very design of the book which was "oh the humanoids aren't humans and so...

McPizza. Now that one takes me back. I haven't thought of that in years. A quick google brings me to the McDonald's wiki which tells me that there's still a location in Orlando Florida that sells it. It can't be the same pizza tho - if there's only one restaurant doing it then it can't be...

Kyle Brink (D&D Exec Producer) On OGL Controversy & One D&D (Summary)

Oh man, I remember when I pulled that down off the shelf for the first time in a couple of decades and read it again. Oof it hurt. I remembered that it was probably bad but it was so much worse than I remembered.

Kyle Brink (D&D Exec Producer) On OGL Controversy & One D&D (Summary)

Mine definitely might have involved giving them some scenarios and jurisdictions where speech that they might not be at all concerned about would be considered "hateful" and asking how they could guarantee that a future Wizards executive might agree more with those jurisdictions than with me...

OSR Any Actual Plays with PoC for OSR Games?

Why would I watch something like that advertises itself like that? If that's the audience you want, it's not for me.

Kyle Brink Interviewed by Teos Abadia (Alphastream) on OGL, WotC, & D&D

I keep thinking back to my 2e copy of Undermountain - it was even more empty than DotMM is. I feel like they pared down the amount of empty space in the dungeon compared to 2e. (Though honestly I agree with the folks who think they could have pared it back further). I'm not sure I like either...

Stop telling me to boycott WotC. If you support open gaming, tell who to support. (+ thread)

I'll put a plug in for Pelgrane Press. Their Gumshoe system is under a CC Atribution license - if you're looking to try a different game system that is still fantasy their Swords of the Serpentine game is one to check out - especially if you're more to the Swords and Sorcery pulp side of things...

D&D General Using Backgrounds instead of Classes

I like it - sounds like it could give a Warhammer 1e feel in some ways. Would definitely be good for a game of more "survival horror" feel. Need to add a Rat Catcher background for full Warhammer 1e effect though.

    D&D General Roll20 isometric grids!

I'm looking at the static image and I can tell it isn't for me. But then, I feel like if the VTT is too detailed it distracts rather than enhances so none of this stuff is going to be for me I guess :)

    The real spring 2023 blockbuster

From the image I thought this was going to be an actual Bob Ross biopic until I clicked through. I think I'm happier that it turned out to not be that.

D&D General What is Good for D&D ... is Good for the RPG Hobby- Thoughts?

But I feel like that analogy is completely wrong. It's more like finding someone who only likes to play baseball but doesn't like soccer or football or tennis. We don't think that's strange or sad at all (well, except for the folks who hate baseball) - it's just they like what they like and they...

D&D General What is Good for D&D ... is Good for the RPG Hobby- Thoughts?

Oh for sure! I don't think there's anything wrong with it at all. In fact I'm happy when I see it - people gaming is better than people not gaming in my eyes. I love other RPGs and there are many that I would rather play, but I still like D&D an awful lot. And when you get a lot of people...

D&D General What is Good for D&D ... is Good for the RPG Hobby- Thoughts?

So I'm going to bounce off this because it hits on an insight I've had that was long and slow for me to learn and I'd like to share it. Some folks have no desire at all to play an RPG that doesn't feel like D&D. They don't want to play a narrative game. They don't want to play a game that...

D&D General What is Good for D&D ... is Good for the RPG Hobby- Thoughts?

This is actually true in America as well - the size of the D&D player base has grown far beyond where it was 20 years ago because of social networks and streaming platforms like YouTube and Twitch. And honestly I think the market is due for a shake up. The generation of players who started...
