HBO - GREEN LIGHT to Game of Thrones!

I still can't justify the extra $50 a month it'll cost me for the required upgrade to my cable plan that would be necessary to get HBO. :) And that's not even counting the set-top boxes they're making everybody but "basic" subscribers buy now, or the headache of figuring out if said set-top...

    D&D and Racial Essentialism

Does every race need a whole slew of cultures? Realistically speaking, yes, if there were another species of sentient beings on this planet they would probably have multiple cultures, but from a feasibility standpoint it makes worlds a lot harder to create. One could rationalize the...

HBO - GREEN LIGHT to Game of Thrones!

I checked... there are no HBO shows on Hulu right now (at least, I couldn't find any) and HBO even has its own Hulu-like service (or will have one soon) that's only for people who get HBO with their cable package, so it's highly unlikely this show will appear on Hulu. :(

    D&D and Racial Essentialism

Has anyone ever come up with a good term to collectively refer to the PC races that doesn't compare them to humans like the terms above? I'm talking about something that can be used in character (so "PC races" is out). Do you think eladrin and drow would appreciate being called "elvinoids"? :)

    D&D and Racial Essentialism

This branch of the discussion reminded me of an example of what I think was ring species (it's been a long time so I may have misremembered what ring species are) that I learned in high school biology. There are different "species" of chipmunks that live in the United States whose territories...

    D&D and Racial Essentialism

The thing is, we're human, so we're biased. :) You've got two choices here if you want to "fix" this. You can either limit the human race to a few key stereotypical characteristics - at which point it becomes unrealistic - or you can describe all other races as being varied and having multiple...

    D&D and Racial Essentialism

Have you seen the American family lately? More and more families are eating in shifts or completely alone. When my fiance was growing up his family hit a point where they would all prepare their own food and eat whenever they felt like it. There are a lot of moral philosophies that say it's...

    Recommend good podcast?

It really depends on the information you want to present. If the podcast is records of a live gaming session then you pretty much need long chunks if you don't want to break up the action. Imagine if you had to play a D&D game in sessions of 15 minutes long each. I'm used to listening to...

HBO - GREEN LIGHT to Game of Thrones!

I'm excited that this is happening, but sad that I don't get HBO (and this show still won't make it worth the price). Maybe I'll rent this on DVD one day. :) And now where's the next book?? :p

4e DMs: Allow players a 5 minute rest after EVERY encounter?

I was the DM for that game, and I think if I'd do it again I'd say that the moment you took to get your bearings, look around, and notice the screaming child that drew you into the next encounter would be enough to count as a short rest. I think because you rushed from one encounter to the next...

    Recommend good podcast?

It doesn't have to do with D&D, but I very much enjoy Escape Pod, Podcastle, and Pseudopod, which are podcasts that give a new short story each week (scifi, fantasy, and horror, respectively). They're very high quality podcasts. I was used to listening to audiobooks from Audible on my iPod but...

What's really at stake in the Edition Wars

Is it worth going into why people have such strong emotional attachments to their game/edition of choice to the point where they get upset when they think someobdy is belittling their system? I think that has a lot to do with what's at stake in the edition wars. I've heard stories in this...

LEGEND OF THE SEEKER #13:Princess/Season 2/2010

I like UST in a TV show, but it's starting to not feel much like tension here. It seems like Richard and Kahlan have become accustomed to the situation and have settled on platonic love. I don't want them to make a big deal out of it because that might get old fast, but it would be nice if...

What's really at stake in the Edition Wars

It depends on how you use it. If you were to compare another rules system to "D&D" for example, somebody might wonder what edition of D&D you were referring to, since different editions of D&D have subtle and not-so-subtle differences. Or maybe you were referring to a particular page in the...

LEGEND OF THE SEEKER #13:Princess/Season 2/2010

Richard and Kahlan need to retire to one of these castles one day. There really are too many things in the world that can nullify a confessor's power. It really makes the whole "we can't be together because my powers would destroy you!" thing a lot less tragic. I'm thinking they should have...
