Wait, that's how you say that?

And engineers call it Ali. Feels friendlier that way. Anyway, just to further confuse matters, it was originally called alumium.

    mmmmm..... Cadbury Cream Eggs.....

I do! I can confirm we have creme eggs all year round :p (Weird, an international forum discussing how good British food is  )

Wait, that's how you say that?

But we don't say the 'r' in words which have it either. Giraffe rimes with scarf. Class rimes with farce. Poor sounds like paw. Makes perfect sense when you're speaking it. :D Just don't get me started on London accents...

    Saddest Song Ever

"Set the Fire to the Third Bar" - Snow Patrol "This Woman's Work" - Kate Bush "Song to Say Goodbye" - Placebo (although it's the video which makes that really depressing)

    When did ghouls become undead?

One for monster origin people. In folklore up until the early twentieth century , ghouls are human-like monsters, usually supernatural but still basically living (albeit cannibalistic). By the time RPGs come along, they've become undead humans. When did the change happen? Most likely it was...

How do you give your NPCs distinction?

How do you make your NPCs stand out, given that they're all to be played by you, the DM?

How to make a maze work?

Randomly. Roll d20+Int bonus. 20+ you get to the other side. 15+ you're back at the entrance. Low numbers result in traps. "Follow the left/right hand wall"="Take 20 and find half the traps" (unless of course the goal is the centre of the maze, or the maze is 3D, or has one-way doors, or has...

    How do you pronounce "Erinyes"

But the Romans called them "furiae" (as in Furies, not furries. That would be too scary :p ) I say "e-RIN-yez". It's not right for a triad of underworld goddesses but I think it works for a celestial who's switched sides.

Could you please help me find small clay urns?

Hmm. You said you wanted to break them? Broken glass is a lot nastier than broken crockery.

    How do you pronounce "Asmodeus"

I've always used second one, but looks like we're all wrong and its got a short o and "deus" has never been "god" in this word. As-mo-DIE-us then for all you pedants.

    Ancient/Roman Britain

Not an RPG sauce, but try the TV series A History of Britain by the BBC. Contains exactly what it says on the cover, narrated by Simon Schama, and covers prehistoric through to the 20th century. It has many nice "common people" touches. The Roman Britain episode, for example, has an extract...

Could you please help me find small clay urns?

How long do they need to last? You could make them crudely out of play-dough to your own specifications and bake them. Failing that, try a deli. See if they've got any fancy food in fancy jars, such as olive oil or vinegar. Find out if they've got any empties.

    Arbitrary monster abilities

That's always bothered me. The original Minotaur was put in the Labyrinth TO STOP HIM GETTING OUT! HE WAS NO MORE CAPABLE OF ESCAPING THAN HIS LUNCH! (Sorry. You just pressed one of my rant buttons there.)

    Horses in mountains

Thanks for the replies. I want a couple of areas (a plateau and a mountain pass) where the party can't take horses, and can't really work around it. Plan B: A large local griffin population.

    Horses in mountains

Can anyone help me with a horse related problem? I have a mountain range, similar in height and geography to the Andes. It is split by deep, long valleys, which are all densely populated. To get between these valleys there are high mountain passes. Now, in the real Andes, llamas are used as...

    Cognac - Educate Me

Of the main brands, Courvoisier and Remy are both good. You don't need anything fancier than VSOP (unless you want to show off the bottle). Recently though I've got to prefer Armagnac over Cognac.

DM's what kinds of monster features 'annoy' you or make your job harder?

Don't forget its close cousin: "Monsters with dozens of feats, none of which are mentioned in its combat abilities." AKA "Oh wait, it does have Spring Attack."

Fantasy/Sci-Fi words which should become mainstream

I'd considered that, but how would you define it?

Fantasy/Sci-Fi words which should become mainstream

Just a bit of fun here. Tolkien brought us the word "Hobbit" and arguably the modern definition of "Orc", and most people understand what both of those mean. So, what other words from speculative fiction should we be able to drop into casual conversation (IYHO, of course) My starters: "Hnau"...

Low Magic in D&D - How'd it work out for you?

I ran a "no middle magic" campaign. That is to say, spells, potions and even wands were relatively common, but permanent magical items were either powerful or non-existant. Example: The party got their first magical weapon - a +2 sword with a minor extra power and a couple of minor drawbacks -...
