    OOTS 496: Responsible

Very touching. Speaking as a parent who has lost a child, it nearly made me cry. Let's hope Rich can play out this storyline with both wit and sensitivity - should be good.

So what 3E adventures were worst?

I liked Deep Horizon. Its one flaw was that it was too short. An extra 16 pages to flesh out some of the locations might have raised this module to classic status. I can't really think of any 3e stinkers. Return to the Temple of Elemental Evil runs out of steam halfway through, but has a solid...

    You're Playing Cards Wrong!

Yup. As was the double step for the pawn's first move (necessiting the additional en passant rule), the extra moves of the queen and bishop and the concept of a stalemate being a draw. Oh, don't forget the elimination of the dice. That really changed how it was played ;)

    You're Playing Cards Wrong!

Hearts? Black Mariah is the only true way of dumping on your mates. Hearts is far too gentle. (ICYDNK, Black Mariah is almost identical to hearts, but you always pass to the left - so you really get to know the person to the right over a series of games, and it scales well between 3 and 7...

D&Disms That Make You Go "Huh?"

Those wargaming convention which were left in earlier editions: Measuring spell and missile ranges in inches  Related: spell and missile ranges trebling when you went outside   Combat rounds being 1 minute long :heh:

Nature of a Dead Island (looking for pseudo-science)..

Antarctica. All the effects of a land being 40 below zero without it actually being 40 below zero.

    Gygaxian Monsters

I have a question, assuming Gary's not get sick of them. Wings on the chimera and manticore. Did you make them flying, or was there some other source? Thanks.

    Travel Advice

Just before you get the atlas out: Leeds castle is NOT in Leeds, it's in Maidstone! Anyway, I second the British museum. The Kensington museums are also worth a visit (Natural History, Science and Victoria & Albert museums), as is Greenwich, where you can see the observatory and (if you want to...

    Favorite 2e modules?

I'm struggling to think of good ones. Nearly everything I ran was either home-brew, from Dungeon magazine, or converted from the earlier editions Here's what I do remember Shattered Circle. Can't really go wrong with Bruce Cordell. Labyrinth of Madness. Don't know if anyone's played the whole...

    Gygaxian Monsters

More suggestions Earwig from folklore. They were rumoured to crawl into peoples ears and lay eggs. Found more info here. The term variously means "owl", "vampire" and "witch", and is all over Eastern Europe. I thought they were from mesoamerican mythology? I'm sure I read an account of a...

    What's your favorite inexpensive wine?

I find you can't go far wrong with a Chilean red or an Australian white. There's some good plonk coming out of California as well.

    Gygaxian Monsters

Sumerian mythology, along with the shedu and Tiamat (in name if not form). African mythology. Basically a hyena. Sprague de Camp and Lin Carter. I found this interesting site. Here's the relevant blurb: Greek mythology, but in a very different form. The Greek ones were a lot bigger...

How long is the ideal TV season?

Just a thought. Do you like short but sweet, or protracted epics?

    Funny Preconceived Notions

Not really a D&D blunder. For about a year I assumed that a hobbit was a sort of dragon. After all, why else would the book have a dragon on the front?

OotS 489 "Keepin' the Little Man Down"

Surely that should be a kiloJones? :D I've been working on the "Gibson", the unit of theatrical anachronism. One Gibson is quite potent - the average anachronism level spread over any four Mel Gibson "historicals". Here are some examples: 1 milliGibson: well-researched historical drama. 10...

Is the Doctor's name really Doctor Who?

I think the time lords either had titles, pseudonyms (like Susan) or remained nameless until "Omega" was introduced in The Three Doctors - and that's arguably a title as well. During Tom Baker's time, a whole bunch of time lords were introduced with names, like Romana, Morbius, Goth and...

Something funny happened in church yesterday . . .

I had the opposite situation the other day. A family friend had left their daughter (aged 9) with us that afternoon. To keep her entertained, I suggested chess. She immediately said yes even though she hadn't played before, but picked it up quickly. I suggested she might practice with her mum...

    What is your favorite soup?

Not sure if you'd count it as soup, but I love laksa, a Malaysian dish comprising chilies, coconut milk, beansprouts, noodles, and various bits of meat served in a bowl. Apart from that, I'm not really a soup fan.
