    Would this be evil?

Neither scenario is evil. The thugs/rakes are not being robbed, not being tortured, not being held to ransom and are not being blackmailed. They are being punished outside of the law, but even then the punishment is not necessarily chaotic. In the second case, the characters could add to the...

    OotS #481 is up

More weight to my theory that the captain is Roy's player's next character. The other two prominent crewmembers would be Hayley's and Belkar's.

    One piece of advice...

I have two too: 1) Learn another language. Whether modern, ancient, obscure or world-wide, it doesn't matter which - just learn to think in a different way. 2) Learn maths. Seriously, once you know de Moivre's theorem, some basic calculus and some probability, most of the world will make sense.

B4:The Lost City and the water problem (possible minor spoiler)

I agree that the water plotline is minor. If your PCs are anything like typical PCs, it'll start like this: PCs: "What's the plot?" DM: "You see a pyramid in the middle of the desert." PCs: "We check it out."

When I see "LD50" I think "lethal dose 50%". I presume from the context that this is a different LD50?

    NPC Advancement

I go by the general rule "1 xp per day, starting at 15 years old" (adjust for non-humans). Certain events (like interacting with adventurers or surviving a calamity) give bonus xp. So the middle-aged inkeeper is probably a 4th or 5th level commoner, but the same guy in an inn popular with...

    My (Very) Mini Rant

I've been looking at day lengths for the past few weeks, and I've noticed them getting shorter by a few minutes each day. By next June the daylight will have run out completely we'll be shrouded in perpetual night. Some in Australia had noticed the opposite effect, but obviously their data're...

Satyr - An excuse for rape, or an interesting creature?

I used satyrs once in a very successful and fun encounter. They were after booze, however. The players have defeated their enemies' forest camp, and among the treasures are several bottles of fine brandy. Eight satyrs (far more than the characters could handle in a fight) turn up, with an...

Castles and Crusades for 55 dollars???

Some are friendly, but have unfriendly (or plain crazy) management. My FLGS is Forbidden Planet. The other day I was in there, and saw they had MM V early. Brilliant! But then I saw the price - £24.99, which is close to $50. Some mistake surely, I tell the staff. No, they say, we found a...

    Destruction on a ludicrous scale

I've once destroyed an entire crystal sphere in Spelljammer (supernova), and I once destroyed the material plane by splitting into its constituent elements; the refugees ending up on various elemental planes. That was in a game involving time travel, so the players were trying to stop this...

[Intellectual challenge] Justify a paladin being a member of a thieves' guild

I can think of two cases: 1 - The thieves guild is an official body with the express purpose of disrupting a nation's enemies' economic resources. In other words they're spies. The paladins in the guild act as chaplains, making sure the active members (i.e. the thieves) don't overstep their...

    English Grammar and Spelling

"Omni-" is indeed "all", but "-bus" is the plural ending for the dative and ablative cases in Latin. The word has been reduced to nothing and only the ending remains - which now has a singular sense. So the three letters "bus" have changed from "dative plural case inflection" to "mass...

Ah, "bus". Look up the etymology for that and see how distorted language can get :D "Bus lane" is an oxymoron.

Gaming Stores in London and-or SW England

Lesiure games is definitely worth a visit. As well as that and Orc's nest, there's Playin' Games near the British museum, but I doubt they'll have old stuff. Great for board games, however. If you've got time, visit Greenwich in SE London. Plenty of second-hand book shops, and I have found old...

    English Grammar and Spelling

English has been dying since Beowulf was written. People today have no understanding of grammatical gender, no-one uses thorn nor eth anymore, and our vocabulary has become swollen with French and Norse borrowings. Meanings get distorted. Black and fast mean the opposite of what they once did...

    My (Very) Mini Rant

Don't know if this is a real statistic or if someone made it up to make a point about misinterpretation of statistics: "80% of serial killers eat chocolate. Therefore, if you eat chocolate, you are likely to be a serial killer." Doesn't specify light or dark though. I eat dark :]

What's the Best RPG Bargain You've Ever Gotten?

Collectible wise, Fighting Wheel as a free gift. From e-Bay, White Dwarf issues 3 to 5 for £17, and Hellbound for £11 :D Speaking of Planescape, Planes of Law and Planes of Chaos for £4 each, plus several modules (including Dead Gods) for £2 each in a shop who were discontinuing their RPG stuff.

How to handle a dud of a party

Take the Chinese attitude. Everyone who came to the party left absolutely stuffed, and there was food left over; that makes the party a success. Everyone who didn't come missed a great party. Their loss, not yours.

Who publishes short fantasy stories any more?

Question for any authors (published or not) out there: As I've mentioned in a few other posts, I'm composing some books and short stories in the fantasy genre. The books are, frankly, hard work, but the short stories are pretty easy to put together. However, where can I actually distribute...
