    fantasy worlds

Flat worlds work really well in fantasy, as you can get away with all sorts of neat stuff. Glorantha, Oerth (Greyhawk), Dreamlands (Call of Cthulhu) and Iron Kingdoms are all flat. Plus, they're easy to map! You could always take an outer plane concept and make it the Prime Material plane...

If you liked the Dungeons and Dragons movie...

Well, the film itself looks more like a Saw rip-off, with the marketing making it look like a Hostel rip-off. I reckon that someone had a psychological thriller type script (something a bit like Phone Booth, but grimmer), and someone else hacked it up (double meaning intended) to get a film out...

If you liked the Dungeons and Dragons movie...

I'm waiting for www.themoviespoiler.com to cover it, so I can see how bad it is without having to watch it. Reviews are ranging between "too sick" and "too pretentious" - though a couple of reviewers seem to like it.

What is your local game store situation?

One (Forbidden Planet) in Southampton. Used to be two, but the other one closed down in dubious circumstances. There's meant to be one in Portsmouth, which is sort of local, but I've never been able to find it.

Doctor Who 2007: The Sound of Drums

My theory: They're the "souls" of humans from some parallel universe, possibly the one from season 2. Mrs Saxon is somehow a refugee from said universe, which is why she's happy to go along with it. Anyone good at anagrams. What could toclafane be?

    Int = IQ?

I think it's irrelevant. IMC the intelligence stat describes learning. A higher int person can learn more (more skill points), learn faster (bonus to knowledge related skills) and can grasp and learn complicated analytic magic and combat (wizard spells and int based combat feats). Problem...

That old flash lingo. Thieves' Cant revisited.

I liked David Eddings take on it in The Belgariad. His thieves' cant was essentially discrete sign language and facial expressions which you could communicate with at the same time as talking.

And Conan should have a ??? accent?

www.ethnologue.com Their numbers are bit on the high side, but consistently so. They treat the various Italian and German dialects as separate languages, for example. They list about 450 Indo-European languages, 300 of which are spoken outside of Europe. Your dictionary probably lists the...

    Obscure RPGs

Maelstrom: Published in the UK in paperback form. Set in 17th century England. Lands of Adventure: A 30 page A5 booklet which still manages to contain a complete RPG system. Warlock: A D&D variant published back when TSR didn't take kindly to D&D variants. Legend Quest: To tell the truth...

And Conan should have a ??? accent?

<pedant>Actually, the Indo-European group mostly consists of Asian languages. However, the languages of Europe are mostly Indo-European.</pedant>

And Conan should have a ??? accent?

The Caucasians have never been Indo-European. According to some theories, Indo-European is an offshot of Caucasian, but Caucasian linguistics is so complex and archaeological remains so scant and inconclusive, it's hard to say for sure. Other theories link Caucasian with Sino-Tibetan, and...

And Conan should have a ??? accent?

Except that the Cimmerians were Caucasians, not Indo-Europeans. Mind you, dialogue in PIE would be cool

    Drow of the Underdark?

Thanks. Don't know how I missed them before.

And Conan should have a ??? accent?

Point one: The Cimmerians were not the ancestors of the Celts in the real world Point two: The Cimmerians are the ancestors of the Celts in Howard's own world Point three: Howard's Celts and Cimmerians are not the same as the real world Celts and Cimmerians Conclusion: Conan's accent should be...

    Drow of the Underdark?

Well, for one, the stats for the vril are missing (or in a very strange place). I don't believe that WotC have issued an errata. Do you know what they are?

Real life beasts that need more attention

I now have an overwhelming desire to stat-up a Dire Partridge :heh:

    Drow of the Underdark?

Well I was unimpressed. Some nice feats and a few monsters I'll use, but otherwise it added little to what we know about drow. As other reviews and comments have pointed out, Lolth worshipping drow are predominant, with little given to other drow factions.

Real life beasts that need more attention

Feel free to start a new thread. The depiction of breasts in fantasy art could do with a touch of reality :D Anyone want to start a rant about breasts on non-mammalian monsters?

But they're the worst type of players...

I have a solution to the powergamer problem. Combine them with another sort of problem player - the one who creates (deliberately or otherwise) a suboptimal character, who therefore needs protecting. The powergamer gets to show off how cool their character is, the suboptimal player gets to do...
