    Doctor Who influences on Ravenloft?

Just finished watching the old Doctor Who story The War Games, from 1969. I'm still going to use spoiler tags because there will be those who haven't seen it: So, has anyone involved in the design of Ravenloft commented on this? Is there an older source which uses a similar plot device which...

Intelligent giant animals in 1E, specifically, the giant lynx

Thanks for all the replies, though no consensus yet. Another possible link: CS Lewis and Narnia. Don't remember lynxes, but MM 1e also has giant intelligent beavers IIRC.

Intelligent giant animals in 1E, specifically, the giant lynx

1E Monster Manual. Lots of giant animals including giant goats, giant centipedes and of course the giant lynx. Some of these animals, against expectations, are intelligent. Now, intelligent giant eagles and intelligent giant spiders I get, as they're from Tolkien. Intelligent giant owls make...

Monster Manual: Legendary Evils Complete Set!!

That's because people love to complain. Consider the silence like a lot of nodding heads at a good speech. Personally, I'm only going to complain that for the first time in two years, I'm actually going to spend money on miniatures that are not on ebay.

Monster Manual: Legendary Evils Complete Set!!

Some good reprints (recasts?) there. Best of all, Beholder, Balor and Green Dragon all as visibles! Seen the character pack PHH2? Not quite as impressive. Looks like the repaint policy is still very much in place.

Stunting and the Bag of Flour Connundrum

Any 2nd Gurus that can help?

I believe this was the basis of one of the weirder traps in Grimtooth's Traps. Players would find a temple dedicated to an obscure demon or evil god, who would have greater than normal chance of responding to his name in said temple. The trap? The god would have a name like "Th'dorr" or...

    OoTS 655

We were all thinking of a heel-face turn for the Monster in the Darkness. But given the events in Start of Darkness, anyone else think that this might be the path to Redcloak's redemption? Spoilers for Start of Darkness: Spoilers over.

    Favourite non-standard polyhedral

This was meant to have a poll with it, but something went wrong :erm: . Anyone know how I can add poll after the 10 minute interval? FYI, here were my intended options d2 - coin flips and binary lots are the only true randomisers d3 - modest and acceptable in all major RPGS d12 (rhombic...

Biomechanics of Flight aka Can Dragons Fly?!

I worked on this problem in a low magic campaign I ran a few years back. I decided that dragons had evolved from sharks, and flew directly from the sea. This gave them an evolutionary head start over all other vertebrate fliers. Why sharks? I used a bit of dodgy science (biologists, look away...

    DDM: Chicks not in chainmail

The DDM line has plenty of women in decent armour. What I find lacking are: 1) Female human wizards. I believe there's only been one (Wizard Tactician) in the entire line. 2) Female human commoners. We've had "Human Commoner", "Sage", "Farmer" and even "Drunken Brawler" to provide decent NPCs...

DM questions that make you go "Uh oh"

"Where, exactly, are you all standing when the door is open?" (After looking at the 19 you just rolled) "Are you sure you didn't want to spend an action point?" "I'll need to know everybody's height and weight." "Okay, you've said the command word. Who's the character nearest you?"

    Siangham real!

Possible lead on the sang-kauw: Ji (halberd) - Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia Okay, that's a polearm - but it is the right shape. I've read that often the heads of these polearms are found after the shaft has rotted away. Maybe the "sang-kauw" is just a badly interpreted archaeological find?

    Bear Lore

I recall a similar joke issue regarding 3e. Remember, the DC to identify a creature is 10+HD: Player 1 (points at a butterfly): What's that? Player 2 (barely glances up): Archon Apollinus, by the looks of it. Player 1 (points at a mouse): And that? Player 2 (barely glances up): That's a Mus...
