Are you familiar with these obscure monsters?

    1. Yes. Used one in a game. Fun monster 2. Nope 3. Nope 4. Yes. Used several times in games 5. Don't think so. I've seen slimes which are red, but they might not be the one you're thinking of (is it the one which turns into a gem?)

    OotS 609

Enough mourning. There were no crosses in the eyes. ;) Good strip. Plot development, character development, action and drama in one page.

Have you seen an Aboleth in game?

Never seen them as a player. Used them twice as a DM, and that's because they were in a published adventure (one was Dwellers in the Forbidden City which AFAICT is their first appearance). It's a great creature with lots of background, but it is quite hard to make an encounter. Both ones I've...

    Caipirinhas!

Regretfully, it didn't work. The curaçao was too strong, and I wasted two good shots making something that tasted like a badly mixed daquiri :-S So far, muscovada and cinnamon has been the best variation.

Streets of Shadow = Sewers of Shadow

I was a bit annoyed too. I pre-ordered two sets on the basis that I would have many city tiles and maybe a few sewer tiles. As a result I have one opened set of Cities of Shadows - and one unopened one. A nice couple of sets. But I agree - too many sewers and not enough buildings.

Losing Points for Faithfulness to Source

I don't think it's at all important to stay close to the source. If it's good, then people won't care that it takes vast liberties. Case in point: no-one complains that Toshiro Mifune is not Scottish in the remake of King Lear, and likewise no-one complains that Clint Eastwood is not Japanese in...

    Caipirinhas!

Thanks for the ideas. For the record, I tried making one with paprika. It didn't quite work. Next experiment will be with curaçao, to get a sort of margarita. I'll let you know it goes.

    Caipirinhas!

Hi all, I have recently discovered caipirinhas. For those who don't know, this is a fantastic mixture of lime and cane spirit (caçacha). No, it's nothing like a mojito. For those who do know, I have some questions: 1) What sort of alcohol do you use? I'm in the UK, and I can only find two...

    Favourite Mortality Rate by Edition

So, how often should your characters die? How often should they come back, and at what cost, to maintain the fun/danger balance? Above all, what edition got this balance the closest to satisfaction?

    When did 4d6-drop-lowest first appear?

I first read it in Unearthed Arcana, which had a whole section on alternative character generation methods. It is probably in an earlier Dragon article, but I don't have time to check.

    Let's pronounce "Genasi"

But gear, gecko, geek, geese, geld, get and Gettysburg do. English isn't known for consistency :.-(

    Let's pronounce "Genasi"

You want a linguist? Well, Arabic has had a soft "g" and no hard "g" for its entire literary history, whereas other Semitic languages have a hard "g". The Arabic letter "jim" (used to spell "jinni") is "gimel" in Hebrew, "gamal" in Assyrian and (though Phoenician) "gamma" in Greek. Languages...

    Let's pronounce "Genasi"

"jen-AA-see" Obviously derived from jinni/genie, so a soft "g" in either case. But it's a made up word, so say whatever you're most comfortable with.

    Comprehensive list of civilizations/socities

I recently bought Peoples, Nations and Cultures - an A-Z of the peoples of the world, past and present by John MacKenzie. Contains exactly what it says on the cover. I haven't finished reading it yet, but so far I've found it excellent. ISBN 9780304365500 if anyone wants it. In the spirit of...

Kanji Mage — as seen in Kamigawa block novels

Some Hong Kong fantasy films, such as the Chinese Ghost Story series , feature characters who do this in a number of ways. Examples: Character writes a hanzi on his hand, shows it to demon, who is repelled (a bit like a holy symbol) Character writes a sacred text on a piece of paper, sticks...

I'm a little depressed, and I don't want to be the only one.

I'm in the same position. There're a group who play at work, yet I cannot find any time between job, education and family life to give the one evening a week I need to join that group. :(

Game Mechanics that cannot be "Justified"

I know of one. There was a variant rule suggested in a magazine some time ago (might've been White Dwarf), and inspired by the fact that sometimes, you get of bed feeling great, and sometimes you have a bad night and feel terrible. The mechanic is very simple. Re-roll your hit points every...

The good, bad and weird of PC names:

Due to me misreading a Korean-English dictionary, I once created a character called "Mister Nine". I still can't remember what I intended to call him, because the "Nine" stuck :erm:

Universal nabs rights to Robert Jordan's Wheel of Time series

This could be very good with the right screenplay. Also, with the right set designers! Added bonus: we get to find out how the names of most of the characters are pronounced :D
