I'll probably follow along. :) Is good book.

D&D General The ENWorld Summer Reading List - Nomination Thread

I support this choice, but since I literally just read it a few months ago, I'm going to pass.

So what are you reading this year 2021?

It's climbing up my list of books to look for. I'll have to note which ones to grab first. It's possible I'll enjoy it more if I read the earlier books, but seriously, the part of it I got through was like going to party with 20 people who know each other, and me. I don't mind a few callbacks...

So what are you reading this year 2021?

I'm holding off for the moment only because I might already have some of the books in the unread boxes. I estimate I've got about 30 boxes of books and 10-15 of them are unread books. The trouble is I don't have shelf space to get them out. I haven't read it earlier because I'm leery of starting...

So what are you reading this year 2021?

Read it as it came out. NK Jemisin is excellent.

So what are you reading this year 2021?

I've been really wary of the Dresden books. Urban fantasy is generally a huge fail for me. (That said, I haven't actually read any of them and yes, someday I will try them!) I just started The Jennifer Morgue by Charles Stross and, 50 pages in, have tossed it. Endless references to things that...

So what are you reading this year 2021?

I read one of them a while ago. It was...long. What ultimately put me off was being told by numerous people that "yeah, it really picks up after book 3 or 4!! Just get through those and it's great!" So...yeah. I'm gonna look for books that are great by chapter 4, not book 4.

    How Quickly Do You Read?

I think it has a lot to do with changing publisher expectations of what the audience will buy. I reread the Corwin books of Roger Zelazny's Amber series, and was struck by how short they were. Nowadays those five would be a single book. Edit: There does seem to be an increasing number of...

The Broken Sword, by Poul Anderson. Better and more D&D than Three Hearts & Three Lions, which is after all about a "modern" man swept back in time.

I have never wanted to punch a character as badly as I did at the end of that book. Five stars.

D&D General The ENWorld Summer Reading List - Nomination Thread

Ha! That was me. Her sf makes my brain hurt, in a good way. Her more recent (ie post mid-80's) fantasy just breaks me. I read Fortress In The Eye of Time and just...had no idea what I'd just read, or who did what to whom. And yet I recently bought it again, and a bunch of the sequels. I will...

D&D General The ENWorld Summer Reading List - Nomination Thread

It was definitely the same posts repeating, not two people listing the same book. If I upvoted it, it remained upvoted. I suspect it has something to do with the fact that you can sort the whole thread in multiple ways. Posts already have a de facto "upvote" feature that people are already...

D&D General The ENWorld Summer Reading List - Nomination Thread

The Dreaming Tree, by CJ Cherryh. This is a bit of a cheat, since it's an omnibus edition of The Dreamstone duology, but it's not like they're super-big books. Or slice it down to just the first book. Ms Cherryh's fantasy generally breaks my brain, but this thread isn't just about safe choices...

    How Quickly Do You Read?

That is a little odd. I'm compelled to be outside more in the summer; so I read less.

    How Quickly Do You Read?

I go in spurts. If I'm into it, a day or two. If I get a bunch of books I'm interested in (say, as gifts), I'll burn through them in a week or two. If I'm reading because reading is what I do when I'm not doing something else, like right now...probably a week. I put 4-5 days as an average. I...

The Bear & The Nightingale, by Katherine Arden. The first author I actually sought out and had sign my copy of her book (it was at a book reading; I didn't stalk her house or anything).

D&D General The ENWorld Summer Reading List - Nomination Thread

I don't know what the deal is with this thread, but it's really annoying to see the same post recommending the same book on three different pages. It suggests there are posts that keep shifting out of sight, and ergo I cannot vote on them. And if voting on something causes the order to...

So what are you reading this year 2021?

Cryptonomicon was a snoozefest. He had a story, he just sorta sauntered it along. Snowcrash & The Diamond Age are my two favorites of his.

So what are you reading this year 2021?

Finished Shadows of the Self, by...that guy. Mistborn. I didn't realize that it was #2 in a sequal trilogy to the original trilogy, so while it was fairly engaging, there were clearly Important Characters that did nothing, and lots of unanswered questions/backstory. Also, I remember the magic...
