D&D General The ENWorld Summer Reading List - Nomination Thread

All Systems Red, by Martha Wells. Ah, shoot, not fantasy. My bad!

So what are you reading this year 2021?

I finished Tatiana and The Siberian Dilemma, both by Martin Cruz Smith, which makes me (finally) current on the Arkady Renko series. Also read The Quest of Kadji by Lin Carter, which wasn't bad at all, and The Night Sessions, by Ken Macleod. Pretty sure I read a couple other books, but I had to...

    So, Wandavision?

I haven't gone back through this thread, or seen mention of this online, but... I watched Wandavision. Then I started on Agents of Shield for the first time in months. I hated Season 3 and couldn't finish it, so jumped to Season 4. Binged episodes 1-4, and is my wont, let episode 5 run for a few...

D&D General why do we have halflings and gnomes?

The Broken Sword, by Poul Anderson, has several descriptions of creatures called gnomes identical to D&D gnomes. It was also published before Three Hearts and Three Lions (and is, IMO, a better D&D story).

D&D General why do we have halflings and gnomes?

...oh my. Pathfinder. He's conflating Pathfinder and D&D. I think. Moot point now.

D&D General why do we have halflings and gnomes?

I run gnomes as woodsy and dangerous, and less "druidic", so I'm OK with dropping druid and emphasizing ranger. Not up-to-date with 5e, so whatever allows them to run with the badgers. And otters. And wolverines. And foxes. The illusionist is spot-on, though. Elves are more pure...

D&D General why do we have halflings and gnomes?

I think it's a dwarf raised by gnomes. And his granny made his cap JUST FOR HIM.

So what are you reading this year 2021?

No. But check out Raymond Chandler.

D&D General why do we have halflings and gnomes?

A road is a lane and a lane is a track and a track is a path and a path is a trail, we can figure it's 2' wide and will accommodate wagons. Good catch! I'm thinking that someone is too invested in this discussion. There are different styles and methods of playing D&D. I don't use average hit...

D&D General why do we have halflings and gnomes?

Dunno. The obsession with evolution always amused me. The campaign setting has real gods. Why is it so hard to believe that cocktrices are actually the result of some god being irked at a farmer? Or chickens laying eggs in a bad magic patch? Or curses? Or all of the above? Half-giants...

D&D General why do we have halflings and gnomes?

I live in a rural town of about a thousand and can attest that we barely have roads -now-. Also, I think a couple of ropes stretched across the road at ankle height would do for the undead marching bands. I mean, a fair portion have 1 hit point, right? One good fall and they're done for. 😁

D&D General why do we have halflings and gnomes?

I'm just jumping around, because I'm not reading tens of pages of you people bickering about the percentage of halflings that own swords AND the percentage of half-elves that have whetstones AND the likelihood of those two meeting, but it really seems like an amazing exercise in projection where...

So what are you reading this year 2021?

I also have ADD, but reading & writing are my "focus" areas, and I generally remember books for years. I've been rereading quite a bit recently, and generally it's gone well, but it's not something I do a lot. So, I hit that point about 10-11 years ago. I realized my reading had dropped to...

So what are you reading this year 2021?

I've reread American Gods at least 3 times. It just doesn't stick with me, beyond a vague memory of being good. Then again, I'm halfway through my reread of Murderbot #5, which I read...a year ago, and it's like I didn't read it at all, so that's confusing. (I stalled out on Tatiana because...

D&D General why do we have halflings and gnomes?

I'm not reading 80+ pages of comments, but Poul Anderson exactly described D&D gnomes in The Broken Sword, which was written in 1954 (and a better, more D&D story than Three Hearts and Three Lions, IMO). We know Gygax read and took inspiration from Anderson, so it's not a great leap to think D&D...

So what are you reading this year 2021?

Murderbot!!!! I told you!!! :) I've only read the Abhorsen trilogy. First two books were fantastic; the third was like "oh crap, gotta wrap this up". Haven't had the heart to read Beyond The Wall yet.

    The Expanse

I thought the finale was fine. They didn't call out the level of misdirection that's going on with Marco and the Martians, but it makes sense to keep Marco as an opponent for some of the last season. Not the strongest season overall, but head and shoulders above almost anything else out there...

    The Expanse

I haven't seen the finale yet, but yeah - the series has sorta undersold his constant need to be right. EVERYTHING was "according to plan", even as it totally disintegrated. He was simply unable to ever recognize a failure or a mistake.

How are those? They're next on my list.
