Bits and Pieces of Worlds & Monsters

I really see the Ninja as set aside for a Ki power source in a 4e Oriental Adventures, so no, I don't think Ninja is appropriate for the Shadow power source. I do think the Hexblade as Shadow Defender would be pretty sweet, though.

    D&D 4E The Blood War in 4E?

The Blood War was easily one of the worst parts of the Great Wheel. I'm glad both of them are gone.

    Green Dragon

Meh. It looks fine to me. I guess you have to have *loved* previous editions' art to be personally offended by the new green dragon.

    Encounter planning wackiness?

The 3e CR system assumed that 1 CR X monster was a match for 4 Level X characters. And it didn't really scale linearly or geometrically, so trying to figure out how many CR Y monsters were a suitable challenge for a Level X party was like a shot in the dark by a blind amputee. I really hope...

Worlds & Monsters -- I has it, too!

I love the archons. I have a feeling they'll be getting heavy use in my campaign. The quickling, though, does look comparatively old school. Maybe it's that they're pencil sketches instead of colored artwork..

Loss of Innate Spellcasting (or 'How Dragons Build Lairs')

The biggest mistake here is assuming that people are clueless or "doin it wrong" because they disagree with you. Sometimes, tastes just differ.

Worlds & Monsters -- I has it, too!

There was a god in D&D called 'Wee' Jas? Boy, am I glad I never read the Greyhawk* fluff. *oh, no, another compound name!!!!!

Worlds & Monsters -- I has it, too!

The more I hear of the Raven Queen, the more I like. The shadar-kai actually seem interesting now, rather than the 'elves, but with, you know, shadow' they were before. And it's a legacy name, so phbbt. I swear, complaining about 'goth' or 'emo' is becoming just as popular (and just as...

worlds and monsters is in my hands

As opposed to the completely orderly Wheel of Alignments that's supposed to be half lawful and half chaotic, a clockwork march of Lawful Good to Goodly Lawful to Goodish to Slightly Less Lawful good, etc round and round. I mean, that seems pretty 'artificial' to me.

    Podcast up

I'm with the designers - figuring out when exactly an encounter is over and how long it takes to get your powers back is not worth the time spent on it.

worlds and monsters is in my hands

In 4e, when the players ask how the demon came to have undead minions, we'll just smile and say "Ancient and Profane Ritual/Eldritch Machine!" Seems pretty simple, to me...

Loss of Innate Spellcasting (or 'How Dragons Build Lairs')

The off-screen 'what does a dragon do out of combat' stuff doesn't need to be in the combat stat block. To me, rules for how a dragon digs out a hole and threatens a village and gathers his hoard are of the least importance.

worlds and monsters is in my hands

Mercury always makes me think of horrible, debilitating brain damage. I really don't like mercury as a fantasy metal. And Iron has a pretty boss anti-magic vibe going on. Cold iron vs fae, for example.

worlds and monsters is in my hands

You mean the vast majority of 3e FR books? ;) Anyways, I don't see Adamantine or Mithril as 'perfected' metals at all. Just like titanium and aluminium (or platinum) aren't 'more iron than iron' or 'more silver than silver'. They're different metals.

    Paladins and granted powers

I would actually like it if Divine power source classes had to, you know, choose a Deity to get its powers from. Divine-powered champions without a Divine patron seem, well, silly to me. Nonmagical codes of honor shouldn't grant Divine power.

worlds and monsters is in my hands

I hated the color-coded spellcaster dragons of previous editions, and had planned to remove them entirely in my first 4e game in favor of a homebrewed 'real' dragon. But I'm intrigued by this new direction. Plus brass and bronze dragons kicked out in favor of iron and adamantine? Nice. I...

How much support are WotC's settings going to get?

I'm going to go ahead and say that we'll probably see a new setting after Eberron rather than rehash TSR's old settings. At least I hope so.

Why I like that POL has no map...

Thanks for the disdain, Virgil, but I still don't want a map. It would push the concept of PoL from 'Lego Chest/toolkit' into 'actual named setting', which is no better than just reusing Greyhawk. I want your campaign's geography to be different from mine.

Rich Baker on 'splat books' and other topics

I love splatbooks. Splatbooks keep a game (and a game company) afloat and give me more options. More splatbooks, please! I really don't understand why people are afraid of them.
