How many Tools do you Need?

Having witnessed the discussions here and elsewhere regarding 'common sense' arguments, I tend to agree with Celebrim. Generally speaking, 'common sense' is used as shorthand for 'what I understand the rules to say'. This is useless and even counterproductive from the standpoint of a rules...

How many Tools do you Need?

Oh, it's not my point, really. I'm just pointing out that increasing the comprehensiveness of a rules system obeys the law of diminishing returns. But then, I view everything through the lens of IE and its various fields, so take everything I say in that vein.

How many classes can use ranged weapons effectively?

Well, this is true, but we do know when the enemies are Bloodied (nice mechanical way of representing this), and so we can sort of gauge this. This is entirely disregarding the dramatic moment of 'We gotta take the guy down NOW before [insert apocalyptic event] happens!'

    D&D 4E 4E: BBEG's Redemption?

I find the discussion re: 'appropriate use of daily powers' quite interesting here. My personal take is that an 'even challenge' isn't predicated on 'going nova', but a daily or two might be used.

How many Tools do you Need?

Imban: While I applaud your desire to 'help' the rules, and also your realization that the smallest increases normally give the best returns, I think you might be a little too optimistic in your project's reception. If someone wants to rules-lawyer a rule, it doesn't really matter how much is...

How many classes can use ranged weapons effectively?

Bishmon: You assume far too much about how 4E operates. Also, I find your conception of Rogues... limiting for my taste. Blackbird: I like your numbers, but you're ignoring the fact that not everything is averages. Believe me, I love statistical analysis more than most, but if the BBEG is...

How many classes can use ranged weapons effectively?

Derren: Well, I guess my point is that in 3.X, unless you specialized in archery, you couldn't be a 'good archer'. I believe your counterpoint is that you could do this in 3.X, correct? You then acknowledge that apparently you can do this in 4E, but must do so using Ranger abilities, correct...

    Gnomes in 4th edition? Maybe...

That is nothing. Do you know what my gaming group called themselves for the Shackled City Adventure path? In Gnomine Polis We all died laughing.

How many classes can use ranged weapons effectively?

I don't believe I said anything about 'effectively'; I said 'able'. I think the 'so far's and the 'yet's in your posts are the important points. We just don't know how many characters will be good with ranged weapons, and we also do not know what the gap between 'power and basic attack' will...

How many classes can use ranged weapons effectively?

I wasn't aware that I was 'defending' anything by my statement. If you want a 'defense', the applicable 'we don't know enough yet to judge' defense is quite capable of handling this issue.

How many classes can use ranged weapons effectively?

Derren, I think your first Given is not exactly correct, as written. I would agree with this, if 'when able' were added to the statement. That is, you will always want to use an 'at will' power rather than a basic attack if that power can actually do something. If you are fighting, say, a...

How many Tools do you Need?

This is a very useful question, and one that arises (in a somewhat different form) in Industrial Design. Specifically, it is the question of tolerances, or in the time-honored form, "How close is close enough?" Tolerances are used in industrial design to denote how large the deviation is...

D&D 4E Wandering Star: Jonathon Tweet's 4E Campaing (He Wants Your Help)

... I hadn't thought about which visual method would be better for adding the dice. I know my _method_, and that is (for d6s) to combine groups of dice into 10s, and then add the remainder. This hooks into the core idea behind having a base 10 numbering system. :)

    How long after June 6?

As for myself, probably a week or two after the books are released. This is due to the scheduling of my group. I imagine I'll devour the three books in about as many days. I am currently working on the details of my campaign that I can work on, without the rules.

    Mindflayer's Interview at WotC

Couple of things. 1) The Gnome rocks. Everyone in my group thinks so. I will agree that Gnome-in-gelatinous cube going, 'Huh-what?!?' would have been great. 2) While this may be the funniest overall, I like the second one the best because it has more gnome 'screen time'. 3) The best line...

Low Damage, High HP ... How is this "Faster"?

So vociferous, Pixie... can you please show me the 10th-level wizard that has only a few encounter/daily powers? IOW, you are judging the Wizard by what you see at 1st-level. What _I_ see is that the Wizard in 4E has more options than a 1st-level wizard in 3.X. I also see that we have little...

    Alright already!!!

That depends entirely on what you read. If you go back to the touchstones, then Gandalf (e.g.) certainly didn't worry about 'recharging' his spells. That was not the limiter. If you go by contemporary fantasy, then you have a circular argument. Most contemporary fantasy has as its 'baseline'...

Wizard Spells 10-16 Two Page Spread

Well, regarding the small number of powers shown, I believe someone speculated in another thread that at the Paragon level, characters would be able to move Heroic Tier Encounter Powers to At-Will Powers, and Heroic Tier Daily Powers to Encounter Powers. If this is true, then there would be...

    Warlords at D&D XP?

Well, I know that my group is simply champing at the bit to get the info on the Warlord. We want to feather a lot of oafs. Or Eldritch Blast them. Or something.

    Possible Scoop...Tiefling Page

Well, I believe Warlords are Int-based, as it says they are in the info thread here. Also, since the Elf Racial Power has a feat based off of it, I believe that Infernal Wrath probably will as well. Something like: 'Whenever you become bloodied, recharge Infernal Wrath' or 'Whenever you drop...
