What's in a name (WotC Article)

In the last AD&D campaign I ran, the magic-user was called Manifesto. I thought it was a great name. It didn't make any sense, but it just sounds cool. Sapientax was another good name--a cleric named by a friend after he had a few years of Latin class in high-school. He had another cleric named...

What's in a name (WotC Article)

Gag names always pop up. It's part of the fun of the game. One of my favorites was Hassan ben-Sobar, a name stolen from a Three Stooges picture and given to a Failed Jedi from the old d6 Star Wars game.

    Lists of non-magical treasures

My players loved the tapestry with a scene on it just like the one in Conan the Barbarian where Thulsa Doon's followers have their, eh, party. Yeah, you know what I mean. Cool furniture, tapestries, decorations for the PC's lair always goes over well. What about magical things or things...

What's in a name (WotC Article)

For a long time I named all my D&D characters <somebody> the <adjective>. It helps to have one single personality trait to fall back on. Two of my favorite PCs were: Elleroc the Efficient Thorglaak the Unpredictable Other naming methods I've seen over the years: Random cool words: Malathion...

    A 3-year-old at Casino Royale!?

My viewing of this awesome movie was nearly ruined by the fact that someone had brought their little daughter, no older than three years old. The father and mother passed her back and forth, trying to cover her eyes during the violence and torture scenes. I was enraged! I wanted to say...

    [November] What are you reading?

I'm hoping to run a Savage Worlds game based on the Temeraire series at Gencon Indy next year. Except I'm going with the US Navy vs. the Barbary Pirates.

    [November] What are you reading?

Viriconium is great stuff. I'll have to check out Light.

    New Avatar tonight

I love this show. The last couple of episodes have had some great action scenes. I'm loving the big-scale earth bending. So who's the poor earth bending janitor that has to go around and fix all this damage to the landscape? Maybe that's "Ole Sweepy's" job.

Misprounced Monsters; Or... What did you call that monster, again?

When we were kids, my friends and I all pronounced this stuff differently. What are you going to do when you can't find it in a dictionary, your parents don't even know (gasp!) and you all read it separately? We had: platinum: pal-uh-TAIN-ee-um paladin: puh-LAD-din mutant: MOO-tant melee...

    The Laws of the Dungeon

This is from a list of Mike's Rules. Mike is a player in my group. * Glyphs are bad. * Never go off alone. For any reason. * Pools of water are bad. * If you always go right, you'll never go wrong.

    [November] What are you reading?

Just finished "Dead West", a great comic mixing spaghetti westerns and zombie movies. I've also read The Road by Cormac McCarthy. I don't know if I can recommend it though. Its one of the best written books I've read in a long time. But its so dark. And there are unspeakable things in...

    Poker Tournament

Some kind of generic ideas, not specific people from history: * A Rail Baron who wants to throw his money around and show off. Maybe opposing rail barons are in the game and use proxies to try to get the other guy out of the game. The players could get involved. * A senator, governor or other...

Another great d20 Past setting: Temeraire

I'm working up a Savage Worlds adventure in this setting for Gencon. It involves actions by the newly created US Navy in the 1st Barbary War. But with dragons.

    Why I don't play D&D anymore

Bah! This is what makes for interesting roleplaying. Would you get on the fighter-player's case if he fought for a few rounds with his axe and only switched when your PC (your PC, not you the player) pointed out his bullheadedness? Or in the case of the pyromancer: still casting fire spells at...

    [October] What Are You Hearing?

Can't get enough MF Doom these days. Thank you Adult Swim and iTunes for draining my wallet. And there's a new G. Love album out too...

AVATAR: How Good Is It and/or Why Should I Be Watching?

I agree with most of what's been said here: intelligent, well-drawn, realistic martial arts with fantastically cool elemental powers. But here's what I like best: I can watch it with my three-year old. You know how many cool shows there are that you can watch with your little kid? Not many...

    Why I don't play D&D anymore

I totally agree with this. I hate the use of the word "build". My group asked a guy not to come anymore because he was like this. We all want to play an interesting character--not necessarily the optimized (what us old schoolers would call "min/maxed") character. Having someone disrespect your...

    [October] What are you reading?

I, too, am reading the last Temeraire book: The Black Powder War. Great, fun stuff! I'm seriously thinking of running a "Dragon's Over the Barbary Coast" Savage Worlds game at Gencon next year based on these novels. Also reading Iain M. Banks' The Algebraist (can't get enough of Banks' scifi)...

What are you listening to at the moment?

When I Get Low, I Get High, by Linnzi Zaorski. Heard about this jazz singer on NPR the other day and found her web site. She has four tracks. Reminds me of Squirrel Nut Zippers. Also been listening to a ton of MF Doom and that theme song to Weeds.
