Casting for a *good* Dungeons and Dragons movie

The Ultimate D&D Movie Starring: Dwayne Johnson, aka The Rock (some ass-kicking barbarian) Max Von Sydow (a bad-guy) Ian McKellan (a wizard bad-guy) Mako (exactly the same character as in Conan the Barbarian) Pete Postlethwaite (Look him up on IMDB -- Innkeeper -- all quests begin in an Inn)...

    OK, Conan pretty much ROCKS

I LOVE the new anthologies of Robert E. Howards Conan stories (starting with The Coming of Conan the Cimmerian). I got the last book in the series lately and my wife and I had to put Conan the Barbarian in the VCR just for old time sake. How can you go wrong? Great stories. Cheesy movie. A...

Korgoth of Barbaria: So very wrong, so very fun.

Ok, I'd love to see this picked up. But I'll also be happy just to have seen the one episode. I thought: this is like a show made by a bunch of D&D playing 8th graders after seeing Conan the Barbarian and Heavy Metal in one, Mountain Dew-fueled all nighter of gaming and watching movies. In...

    Words you learned through D&D

So many, but I'll stick to the three: quaff, doff/don, and the use of former and latter. I'd heard of the latter but not the former. D&D is singlehandedly responsible for my dominance in scrabble, boggle and the like. Hey! There's another one: "the like". D&D also taught me rapid simple...

So how long have YOU been playing D&D?

83-84, around that time. I was 10 and I got the basic boxed set. My neighbor and I sat and made characters for an entire summer vacation before we really understood what we were supposed to do. When we figured out how to play, we wondered what to do with this big fat folder of dozens of...

Where do YOU steal your names from?

I get inspiration for names anywhere. I try to write them down so I can refer to them later. I named a swashbuckling villain "Grignard" after a set of reactions that I had to learn for Organic Chemistry. Street signs and housing addition names are good too. I've used "Briarwood and Twickenham"...

    Why no Dune RPG?

He who controls the dice, controls the universe! Sorry, could not resist.

Which rules-light RPG system would you recommend?

Better yet, try FATE which is built on top of Fudge. I think it would be perfect for RPG noobs. http://www.faterpg.com/ Edit: A couple of people beat me to it. I've played this and I really like it. Its also great for those nights when half your game group doesn't show and you need to throw...

What other games have influenced your D&D campaigns?

I'm a huge fan of the Hero Point mechanic used by so many games. My D&D action points are like a mix of Spycraft actiond dice and Mutants and Masterminds hero points. I also stole Spycraft 2.0's dramatic conflict system for when our 15th level rogue/spymaster had to seduce a succubus.

Tactical arguments and how to avoid them

Lead by example. While the others are wasting time planning, kick in the door, swing on the chandelier and save the princess. Then run past the rest of your party with the evil wizard's guardians chomping at your heels. "I got the princess, guys! You get the guards!" People play according to...

    I am drunk with power!!!

"Bow before <bad guy's name>!" I'm a big fan of NPCs speaking in the third person.

    Agianst the Giants

I ran this one about a year ago in my 3.5 campaign. I think we had 3 12th level PCs with an NPC hireling. The players, knowing this was an "old school" adventure got really cagey. I've never seen them plan so much. They did hit and run tactics, assassinating lone giants and leaving their bodies...

    Nuclear weapons of D&D Rules

Wildshape/Polymorph is so annoying. Its probably one of the coolest things a magic-based character can do. Who wouldn't want to be able to transform into other creatures!? But it takes soooooo much bookwork. Our party druid/master of many forms just picked like one or two forms and made up the...

Tactical arguments and how to avoid them

Groups that I've been in that spend too much time planning were usually groups that got smacked down hard multiple times previously. It was a symptom of a larger issue. Players were getting frustrated by being defeated either by chance (bad rolling) or by poor DMing (power trip DM, unfamiliar...

    [May] What are you reading?

Read the Amber stories first. Both are classics, but I think the Amber books are better. Good luck resisting the urge to use the "trump cards" in your next D&D campaign!

    [May] What are you reading?

I moved on to Consider Phlebas, another Iain M. Banks Culture novel. I love the Culture stories. Next up: Doc E. E. Smith's Lensman stories.

Should I add Action Points to my game?

We started using APs both in our Eberron campaign and later, in our main campaign after we had so much fun with them. They really add another level of excitement to a major roll. My players tend to use them for crucial saving throws or to boost skill checks when they really need to make them...
