    It's official...

I hate the Feylock too, so it's nice that WotC agrees with me. :)

How to run encounters with oversized parties

I have to disagree. Fewer higher level monsters means higher defenses. So the party does less damage, making up for the reduction in total HP. And, because hitting is more difficult, it's harder for the party to build off each other's powers. There's no damage jump from Warlord's Favor or...

    Draconic Spellcaster: Seriously?!

Situational bonuses like Back to the Wall or Nimble Blade?

    Broken Wizard combo?

That doesn't say anything about what kind of powers they are though. Sure, a wizard has Blood Mage powers on top of his class powers. But he also might have racial powers. Elven Accuracy is a racial power, not a wizard power, even if a wizard has it. Similarly, Bloodmage powers are not, in...

    Broken Wizard combo?

Yeah, I did. I saw nothing there to indicate that paragon path powers count as class powers. Which would also have other implications (like multiclassing). And the Blood Mage text itself distinguishes between Blood Mage powers and wizard powers in one of the other features.

So, any consensus on PHB2 powerhouses?

Well, I'd probably expect attribute bonuses to be going to the sorcerer's secondary stat. It is bonus damage, AC, and secondary effects on powers after all. And in that case, the sorcerer basically does gain back about that 1.5 per tier, for the same damage as the warlock. Our infernal lock...

    D&D 4E Confirming the 4e Math, Stage 1: Iconics

At level 21, you can bristle with items by using the free gold to get them. A level 20 item's worth of gold buys a lot of mid level stuff.

    Monsters, Dazing, and Charge

Daze is most useful when you can exploit it via positioning (as mentioned, shifting to be 1 square away helps) or other conditions (like prone).

    Broken Wizard combo?

Spell Focus and Orb Mastery apply to wizard powers. Destructive Salutation isn't a wizard power; it's a blood mage power.

    [Was]Forked Thread: GTS 2009 D&D Seminar : [Is] Playstyle & Evolution Discussion

Yes. That's exactly why DnD should focus on its core elements like combat. Trying to be all things to all people doesn't seem like a real recipe for success; a compromise game won't really please anyone.

Edition Bias and 4e Sales Perception

Like 3.5 was supposed to be? I don't think people would have really been willing to accept another 3.5 from WotC.

    Trolls!

When you have several trolls in an encounter, even a fire/acid at will isn't going to be enough to shut down their regeneration. And giving weapon characters a fire at will can be expensive - Flaming Weapons are the highest level for their plus. And it can be difficult to make sure the...

    PHB 2 power creep

It's not necessarily any more lucky. But barbarians have several abilities that magnify the impact of good luck. A crit, besides providing a maximized attack, bonus crit dice, and often high crit, also adds an extra attack. Action points recharge every two encounters. Twin Strike provides...

    PHB 2 power creep

I added in the lower level version via edit. The campaign ended months ago, so I'm not exactly remembering what happened TODAY - fun with Attacks on the Run happened near the end of the game, so it's the most recent incident to recall. There where several instances in which luck, and resource...

    PHB 2 power creep

So with a critical hit, two Daily powers, and an action point, a barbarian did a lot of damage. I think our ranger can put out similar numbers with Biting Volley + Attack on the Run. Granted, that's a bit higher level. But when you have a good striker class unloading lots of...

Gotta go, gotta go, gotta go right now!

Defeatism like that pisses me off. In one game, our paladin was Enervated a few times fighting a vampire necromancer. So, with something like -7 attack, he had problems hitting. And then complained of not being able to do anything. Of course, a lot of her AC was coming from a 3.0 shield...

Gotta go, gotta go, gotta go right now!

It can useful to reorder initiative to allow allies a chance to move out of area blasts, set up flanks, not have the most vulnerable person move up front right before the monster's turn, etc. OTOH, actions are resources too. You don't want to squander them. Reordering turns to gain an extra...

    Trolls!

But trolls do effectively regen while KO, since they can pop back up if not killed with fire/acid.

    PHB 2 power creep

Our battlerager stuck with mass marking powers (Come and Get It, Sweeping Blow even using a hammer, and Passing Attack plus dragon breath racial), so he was difficult to ignore. He needed far less healing in most fights than the previous weapon talent fighter, which meant that my warlord's...
