    Thief + to hit crazy?

Against monsters without area attacks, having more characters in melee tends to spread the extra risk not covered by the defender out over more characters. Let's consider the reverse situation - the Thief is only other character in melee. In this case, we can expect the rogue to get pounded...

    Summoner Wars

I'm awful at this game. I'm lucky to win 1 out of 3 no matter which race I pick.

    Thief + to hit crazy?

Rogues have the same benefit of their attack stat also covering 2 defenses. Rogues have Weapon Talent for daggers. And Rogues should have always had combat advantage upwards of 80% of the time, not a little more than half the time (that is just some awful play on the part of the rogue and his...

How does one beef up damage dealt by 2nd lvl Wizard?

If you want to increase your damage, hit more guys.

    Dominion

Just got Intrigue (our first Dominion related title) and played it a few times with 4. So far, I've been seeing too many interesting seeming card combos to exercise enough discipline to implement any of them very effectively. :)

    Was the rogue really updated?

Didn't clerics have something like 2/3rds attack bonus while thieves had 1/2? That would make having the same attack bonus as the cleric a significant buff to the rogue/thief.

    OMG... you aren't *HUMAN*!!!

I think your experience might be somewhat anomalous. IME, it was extremely unusual for people to play humans in 1e and 2e because of the benefits of multiclassing, no racial benefits for humans, slow XP progression making level limits largely a non issue (especially because of multiclassing)...

Rare Magical Item Preview - Holy Avenger

So the only change is that someone who wants a holy symbol/weapon and likes radiant powers can't buy/make a preferred item easily, whereas someone most improved by other items (say basic attack enhancers...) can make or buy improvements easily. This is exactly why I didn't like the idea of the...

    How effective is grappling?

Even if a wizard has D-Door to escape a grapple, the grapple is still usually a better move than just hitting them.

    How effective is grappling?

It's more useful if you tend to fight leveled humanoid type opponents instead of huge monsters. Fortunately, most of the traits that lend themselves to grappling - high base attack, size, and STR - improve conventional combat abilities, so most grapplers aren't bereft of back up options.

    Instant Friends

I vastly preferred the Charm utility powers that worked with the skill system (bonuses, rerolls, skill replacement, success modification in skill challenges) to the horrible kludge of Instant Friends, which tends to replace it, and uses an essentially unprecedented and incredibly swingy...

Essentials: Magic Item Rarity Explained, it's actually good!

This change seems more like an excuse not to properly balance items. With tons of magic items across all the books, there are only a handful that appeal to a wide variety of characters. When you look at optimization threads, there are a few items that pop up over and over: Iron armbands, frost...

Did magic-users use weapons more often in older editions?

It depends on critical fumble rules. With potentially harsh fumble results, spamming thrown dagger or dart attacks can often be more of a liability than an asset (especially with a lowish hit chance). And I didn't see too many people playing older editions without some sort of critical...

Why is/was melee training so bad?

Strength also has tons of feats. Every weapon critical feat except bow mastery requires Strength, along with a great many weapon related feats in general. And, looking at STR based classes, I don't think there's really a case that they're weaker than other classes if you take away OA related...

Why is/was melee training so bad?

Our CHA paladin in our first 4e game was basically a joke - at least in part because no OA threat makes for weak defending. Defender classes not based on STR really need Melee Training or the equivalent IMO. OTOH, slightly reducing OA damage isn't likely to be make or break. It's still going...

    Babylon 5

Maybe watch the pilot or the Gathering for an introduction to the characters, that one episode where they rescue the survivors of Babylon 4, and then the best episode of Season One, Signs and Portents. Then move on to season two.

Save or Die: Yea or Nay?

While it is a matter of preference, I think there's some essentially disjointed elements when there's basically plot armor for characters to create an expected level of durability, but then introduce significant instant death chances back in - especially when those become common. If you want a...

Did WotC underestimate the Paizo effect on 4E?

I think WotC definitely underestimated the ill will generated by "firing" Paizo from Dragon and Dungeon.

A Discussion in Game Design: The 15 minute work day.

As a mechanic, it creates disincentives to using your points to do cool stuff. And means that needing some extra luck to survive turns into fewer XP - leading into a sort of character growth death spiral.

A Discussion in Game Design: The 15 minute work day.

There's a limit of one AP per encounter. So very few characters benefit from stacking up AP. And if you rest after every encounter, you can use an AP every encounter. If you press on, you have a total AP per day of half the encounters plus 1. So you can use APs more often by resting.
