D&D 5E (2024) What Monster Should Have Made the Cut?

You can go to Beyond now and if you go to the monster section, filter on the 2024 MM entries. May not be able to see the details, but you'll see the names.

    D&D 5E (2024) Monster Manual Organisation

Perhaps the way to do it would have been to go alphabetical, with a blurb entry for groups like Demons, Dragons, or even Elf. At the bottom of that section, list everyone whose in that category so you can go to the individual entry. You get to see what the group/subtype has in common, and then...

    D&D 5E (2024) Lycanthropes in the MM

Trolls and fire, Werewolves and silver, Fey and cold iron - yeah, I mostly agree. But it can get a bit sketchy if its the only thing that can permanently put something down. You end up with golf bags to handle all the different possibilities you may encounter. It is a neat approach to put in...

    D&D 5E (2024) Why No Monster Creation Rules in D&D 2024?

I've literally made two books of mostly from-scratch monsters (and working on a 3rd). Not having the monster creation rules in the 2024 DMG - and it looks like not in the 2024 MM either - is beyond disappointing. Sure, I can use the 2014 guidelines, but then that doesn't incentivize me to buy...

    D&D 5E (2024) Lycanthropes in the MM

I do wish the case that silver trumped magic vs. lycanthropes. Maybe normal weapons do nothing (Immunity), Magic weapons do half (Resistance) and Silver does full? Or, could go a step up Normal --> Resistance, Magic --> Full, Sliver --> Extra (I think 2024 is close to the latter).

    D&D 5E (2024) Monster Manual Organisation

In the end, there's no perfect way to sort the monsters, just pick a method and stick with it - and try to be as consistant as you can. When I first saw the 2014 MM, I thought it was silly that the animals were in a separate section from the rest of the monsters, the same with the NPCs. Why...

    D&D 5E (2024) Lycanthropes in the MM

🤷‍♂️ No PC class or race should have a universal immunity, and there should be a chink in their armor somewhere. And monks are not weaklings - they are as skilled as any other martial character, with innately supernatural abilities. Also, learn to take a joke.

D&D 5E (2014) So 5E is the Successor to AD&D 2nd Edition? How and How Not?

Oh I certainly remember the golf bags full of +1 swords in my own 2E campaigns; but the DM's advice from the designers at the time would have been a very finger-wagging "you need to make those disappear via theft, the PCs certainly can't sell them.". And the video games were a different beast...

D&D 5E (2014) So 5E is the Successor to AD&D 2nd Edition? How and How Not?

If D&D was a car, I would say that 5E has the paint job and outline of 2E, but it's a whole different interior and engine. It has the same outward facing names of things, but the mechanics and playstyle are nothing alike. It's like this - both of them have class levels up to 20th and spell...

    D&D 5E (2024) Why No Monster Creation Rules in D&D 2024?

Or, put the "newb" stuff in the Starter box for new DMs and make the DMG a complete toolbox.

    D&D 5E (2024) Why No Monster Creation Rules in D&D 2024?

Yeah, the DMG shouldn't JUST be a beginner's tool. It needs also to be a toolbox to reference past the noob stage. And that should have meant that monster creation information should have either been in the DMG or MM (I would have preferred the latter, personally - that just seems a logical...

D&D General Chris Perkins and Stan! - previous D&D edition thoughts

I had that impression too, but after recently dusting off my 2E books and giving it a go, 5E plays nothing like 2E, and the design mindset back then really is at odds with the core of 5E. I'd still play both happily but they are quite different experiences.

D&D General Chris Perkins and Stan! - previous D&D edition thoughts

Yep, between the changes I've seen in 2024 and that it looks like they are going to double down from here, I think its time for me to peace out from WotC D&D.

D&D General Which edition did Turn Undead the best?

If 5E gave Clerics 3 turn attempts at start, it would be right where I want it. The older editions always annoyed me that you basically had infinite attempts (at least, until you failed - but if you had a T or D there was no chance to fail. And you could always start over with the next group).

    D&D 5E (2014) What's a Yugoloth?

Wow, I'd forgotten about this pic from D3 until I saw it. Yeah - they're a handful, at least three!

    D&D 5E (2014) What's a Yugoloth?

Oh, the irony. In the game I was/am co-dming, the Warlock PC had a fiend pact and the patron turned out to be an Arcanoloth (who managed to keep its true nature secret until over half way in the campaign) ... working for a Lord higher up in the chain. And its interest in the Warlock was...

    D&D 5E (2014) What's a Yugoloth?

Demons fly into combat with glee. They're the combat monsters. Devils use combat when they must, preferring to overcome their opponents with subtlety and trickery. If they're engaging in direct combat, they're doing it wrong. Yugoloths sow discord so their enemies fight each other and they...

D&D 5E (2024) Class Tags in the new MM

Class tags are also helpful if you want to switch out an ability or two or "advance" them further into the class.

D&D General Drow & Orcs Removed from the Monster Manual

If it's all "backwards compatible", that leave me little reason to move forward in the first place.
