D&D 5E (2014) Which was the most recent Wizards adventure you consider a classic?

It had several innovations for it's time A strong, central villian whose history and motivations were mapped out rather than being "just a stat block" with at best a name attached. A villain who moves and reacts to the player's action rather than remain in one static spot A method of...

    D&D 5E (2024) I attack the darkness!

For some reason, the whole discussion in the first post didn't click with me until just now. That's a weird rule interaction and not something I'd let a player end up arguing out of having Disadvantage to attack/be attacked. Maybe "You can't have advantage to hit a target you can't detect...

D&D 5E (2014) Hypothetical: WotC goes under and Hasbro vaults D&D. Now What?

I think Piazo is position that they would initially take the lead, likely with Kobold Press in 2nd place. I don't follow any influencers so that's harder to see with my crystal ball. I imagine though that the big ones (Critical Role?) would see a noticeable drop, but would continue since...

D&D 5E (2014) Hypothetical: WotC goes under and Hasbro vaults D&D. Now What?

Yeah, if WotC/Hasbro pockets D&D, the genie's out of the bottle. It's either play with what you got, buy old material off e-bay or see other companies take up the slack with OGL/CC versions of D&D adjacent clones and/or supplements. Pathfinder, A5E, ToV, Shadowdark and all the others will fill...

    D&D 5E (2024) I attack the darkness!

As for using Theater of the Mind, that's probably best handled when "blind attacking" to make the attack at disadvantage and add an additional AC bonus to the target (around +2 or so, or maybe add the target's PB to AC) to represent not knowing the physical location of the target.

D&D 5E (2014) I feel like the surveys gaslit WotC about """"Backwards Compatibility""""

Yes, I know you're talking about 5E, but where did wanting the billion come from? An article, stock report?

    D&D 5E (2024) Stealth in 2024 - Alternatives

I prefer the one roll, but individuals may have a better or worse chance depending on the primary means of Perception (i.e., hounds having Advantage when using smell, Eagles have advantage when using sight, or Bats relying on sound, etc.). Active roll of Stealth vs. passive Perception (+5 if...

D&D 5E (2014) I feel like the surveys gaslit WotC about """"Backwards Compatibility""""

I vaguely remember in 4E they were trying to push D&D to a $50m property, but I haven't heard anything about expecting a billion out of them - that seems excessively unrealistic. Do you have a source for this?

    D&D 5E (2024) I attack the darkness!

I must be unusual. I've run several combats/encounters where the target can't be seen. If it makes some sort of attack roll, the attacker has to specify a 5 ft. square in range. If the target isn't in that square, it's an automatic miss. If it is there, the attack is still made with...

D&D 5E (2014) What If Everyone Could Use Scrolls? (House rule)

Just as an aside, another potential abuse could be the spellcasters crafting scrolls for the non-spellcasters - or just for each other. By the rules, it would be way cheaper to scribe your own than go out and buy them - and depend on random chance at that. Wiz: "Hey, that heal spell is pretty...

D&D 5E (2014) I feel like the surveys gaslit WotC about """"Backwards Compatibility""""

I agree - the 2E edition itself wasn't the problem, it was all the things going on behind the scenes (and unrelated to the published game) at TSR that was a problem. Now, I'd be willing to agree that the rerelease of the 2E core books in the black-book format was probably a bad idea; in...

D&D General Building a New Mystara

What are your thoughts on creating non-human countries, akin to the Elves of Alfheim, Dwarves of Rockhome and such? Do they have to still be based on some real-world analog fantasied up and is their origin still from off-world?

D&D 5E (2014) Need help with idea. All comments welcome.

Humans and their ilk are always great antagonists. Warlock NPCs with Pact of the Genie as opponents might be appropriate - a "hit" team specifically gathered to thwart the party or their antics being the reason for the early summons. Counter-elementals (i.e., A Water Elemental in opposition to...

    Level Up (A5E) A5E POD?

I'm just starting to take a serious look at A5E, and I'm trying to get a print copy (I use a lot of PDFs these days, but when doing "relaxed" reading, I like to have the physical books around). I don't see a POD option for the books on DriveThruRPG, and otherwise getting a copy in the US is...

D&D 5E (2014) I feel like the surveys gaslit WotC about """"Backwards Compatibility""""

I have a quibble with this; part of the issue was 2E was allowed to run too long (MtG was kicking its ass as well as other behind-the-scene company issues). It's like calling the Atari 2600 "unsuccessful" because of the Game Market crash, when the console itself was successful for quite a...

D&D 5E (2014) I feel like the surveys gaslit WotC about """"Backwards Compatibility""""

One of the wilds things I was just looking on Amazon to see if 5E 2024 had any numbers there showing for ranking or sale volume, which it doesn't seem to show. Conversely, 5E 2014 is showing that it sold over 700 copies for the PHB alone in the past month (Core 3 had 100+ sales). I'm shocked...

D&D 5E (2014) What If Everyone Could Use Scrolls? (House rule)

I was a little hesitant when you first mentioned it, but I think it is a nice addition. I'd also consider breaking it slightly to different skills - Arcana for Wizard and Sorcerer spells, Performance for Bard spells, Religion for Cleric and Paladin spells, Nature for Druid and Ranger spells and...

I too have dumped the edition treadmill and have been voting against 5.5 with my wallet. They've had about 8 editions to get this right and if they can't be happy with that, a 9th isn't going to fix it.
