A call to would-be 4E publishers (if it wasn’t for the GSL).

Indeed! I had not previously been aware of FC. But after the discussion here and reading some other things about it, I'm very interested. Will be downloading shortly!

A call to would-be 4E publishers (if it wasn’t for the GSL).

I would argue that there should be no fluff at all. Iow, just focus on the system and rules. I think having any kind of fluff is counter-productive at this point and contrary to the goals.

A call to would-be 4E publishers (if it wasn’t for the GSL).

Wow, 15 years old! That provides a great buttress for this project. And I saw the new ENWorld Wiki...maybe one of the folks working on the material here would want to use that to slap his work out to the world, tho I'm sure Morrus et al. might find fault with such even though its well within...

    free 4E?

Mr. Brink, I posted this in the other thread and am re-posting it here. I would like to ask you your opinion of this blurb from the US Copyright Office: hr Secondly, I would like to also advocate for the use of BOXM and BOXMII in finding usable OGL material for this surrogate system. Both...

A call to would-be 4E publishers (if it wasn’t for the GSL).

I appreciate your thoughtfulness and concern about the legal well being of the project. I interpret that as exemplary of your high level of support for these efforts contained in this and similar threads. However, no matter the intention of any participant, as long as the final product...

A call to would-be 4E publishers (if it wasn’t for the GSL).

All the stuff that is definitely under OGL (like feats and item bonus) do not need to be changed. Everything that has only just appeared in 4E (like healing surge, second wind) definitely DOES need to be changed. Again, this is where game designers need to give their input bc they are the...

    free 4E?

I'm beating a dead horse here and reiterating stuff that probably doesn't need to be, but...... I think there might be some over thinking of the issue going on. Licenses really play no role in creating an OGL 4E surrogate. The only issue is what text WotC can claim as copyrighted, b/c it is...

A call to would-be 4E publishers (if it wasn’t for the GSL).

Ruis, I think what he's saying is that some things like basic items are not a necessity when creating analogues/surrogates since they are pretty basic and general. This kind of applies to power and feats, tho it would be nice to have surrogates for those in the end. Mostly, its the rule...

A call to would-be 4E publishers (if it wasn’t for the GSL).

I would argue that since there is a question, go ahead and use the suggested surrogates in the other thread. And come up with more where needed. Lets start by hashing out ideas in this (or another) forum thread, then after ideas begin taking shape throw them up on a wiki in some sort of ordered...

A call to would-be 4E publishers (if it wasn’t for the GSL).

The main issue is simply staying away from text identified as intellectual property of WotC (i.e. copyrighted). Some terms are more obvious than others; and some fall into grey areas. The hard part is re-explaining the rules without using WotC language and creating new terms to act as...

A call to would-be 4E publishers (if it wasn’t for the GSL).

A call to would-be 4E publishers (if it wasn’t for the GSL). I saw this thread talking about a “free 4E” http://www.enworld.org/forum/showthread.php?p=4345293 …basically a community attempt to create 4E-surrogate system under OGL (and partially derived from OGL sources) for publishing...

saw on Slashdot, thought would make a good user creation

I don't do rules design, so someone out there might like this idea to incorporate into a new magic item or psionic device. "An AP wire reports that DARPA has granted a $6.7 million contract to Northrop Grumman to develop 'brainwave' binoculars. The binoculars will be built into a helmet...

Character Creation Software - Straight Answer Please

Yes, that is correct. Reproducing the underlying logic defined by the rules through (compiled or not compiled) computer code should not normally be a violation of copyright law. However, using descriptive text (ie. powers, feats, classes) and other proper nouns (ie. Cleave, Eladrin Teifling)...

    4e D&D GSL Live

After thinking about it, I would guess that you could not use trademarked names/proper-nouns in the software application (names of monsters, races, powers, etc). But I'm pretty sure that as long as the names are not trademarked, then their use does not otherwise constitute a copyright violation...

    4e D&D GSL Live

The difference between copyright and patent. I have a friend in law school...yea yea I know, my first mistake...but we were talking and there is one issue that I can't understand. The 4E rules are governed by copyright. They are not patentable, and even if the rules were patentable there is...

A talk on the concept of "failures" in a skill challenge (no math, comments welcome)

OP brings up a good point...but it might have more to do with player dynamics rather than system/mechanic dynamics. In any event, the primary difference b/t combat and skill challenge is that combat has no role-play override whereas skill challenge does. That is, in combat I can't act out the...
