    Perception v. Spot

Yeah, I'm wondering if the new skill focus is going to work this way. You train in a broad general skill, like Perception, Athletics, or Persuasion. But then you take skill focus which gives you a bonus to Spot or Listen, Climb or Swim, or Bluff or Diplomacy. That'd be kinda cool.

    Turning + Radiant/Necrotic damage

Seems reasonable. 1/2 lvl + cha bonus vs Will. That makes stronger willed undead like vampires and liches harder to turn without having to add in some arbitrary "turn resistance" number, which is nice.

So, what Class are you dying to play?

Well, I mostly DM in general, so I doubt I'm going to get to play any time soon. However, the idea of playing a Paladin of a non-traditional god appeals to me. A human Paladin of the Raven Queen who's romantically in love with her (shades of the Black Company, anyone?) seems like a cool guy to play.

Dungeons of Dread Preview 3: Templates

Is it weird that this was one of the first things I realized, and one of the things that makes me happiest? It's kinda weird, isn't it?

If the devils are how monsters will be....I am so happy

Maybe it's just me, but this seems.... suicidal at best. Your spellcasters either have to come with silent versions of all their spells, or stand outside the silence radius, in which case they get pasted anyway. I guess it would be. I guess if the choice is between taking your casters out of...

    D&D 4E 4e damage types?

I'm sure I saw Lightning damage somewhere.

If the devils are how monsters will be....I am so happy

Man, I will dance a friggin' jig if the dominance of Dispel Magic is purged from the game. I'd rather there be actual, y'know, counters to different spells and moves, rather than just one catchall spell to dumbly brute force your way past. Draw bigger maps? Probably not. But then again, the...

If the devils are how monsters will be....I am so happy

Maybe not. We don't know. Pfft. Whatever. Check the ego at the door, 'kay? Also, you've clearly demonstrated a lack of tactical thought if you're completely disregarding fundamentals like movement and positioning. Then what's the point of all these SLAs if all the party does is just...

Newest Biggie Smalls report is up

Hmm. Is it possible that tracking challenges use both Nature and Perception, much like social challenges use multiple social skills to resolve situations? Am I reading too much into this?

Death and Dying trial rules... when do you die?

*Facepalm* OF COURSE! Man. The new save mechanic is turning into one of my favorite rules so far. How weird is that?

R&C Human Resiliency = Better Saving Throws?

Oh, good catch! I hadn't thought of that, but now that you mention it, it seems screamingly obvious. Considering it's as powerful as it is, combined with taking a Second Wind as a minor action, do you think humans are still going to have a free extra feat and trained skill?

Death and Dying trial rules... when do you die?

I will point you to the DDM saving throw table: d20 Roll Result 1-9 Effect Continues 10-19 Effect Ends 20 Effect Ends, along with any other effect that allows a save. So the mechanic is unified already.

    New Article: Death and Dying

Actually, what it incentivises is for the monsters to focus on the healer before he can revive his downed companions. Because there's no "healing tax," if the monsters fail to kill the PC before the cleric or warlord get their turn (not unlikely, given the large hp buffer), then all their...

If the devils are how monsters will be....I am so happy

Because combat *won't* be just movement and swinging. Have you forgotten about all the nifty powers everyone has? First of all, the assumed party size in 4e is now five PCs, though that's nitpicking. Second of all, when I have a dude with a 15' radius fire and fear aura who can also cause...

D&D 4E Death and Dying in 4E: Propose Your Own Homebrewed Rule!

Well, my rule would be nearly identical to the 4e one, except to do away with negative hp entirely. It is impossible to kill a PC who has even 1 hp left, even if they take 200 damage in one hit. The only way for a PC who's down to die is to fail three saves before stabilizing or if he's coup de...

Will you try the new "Death & Dying" rules now?

If I were playing D&D right now, I'd use 'em in a heartbeat. I'm debating whether to import them to my Star Wars game or not. It's a cool mechanic, but I'm not sure it's in genre for Star Wars.

    New Article: Death and Dying

Yeah, except we don't know how things like potions of healing work yet. Maybe a potion doesn't give back 5 hp at 20th level, but gives you a healing surge which restores a certain percentage of your hp.

    New Article: Death and Dying

There is. You roll a natural 20. You only have a 5% chance to self-stabilize instead of a 10% chance, but self-stabilization comes with extra bennies, so that's nice.

    New Article: Death and Dying

Hmm. I'd missed that. I don't think it's right to visualize the natural 20 as "Just a flesh wound." I think it's more appropriate to visualize it like Inigo Montoya in the Princess Bride, stabbed in the gut and on the verge of death, but pulling through with sheer force of will and fighting on...

    New Article: Death and Dying

Well, I've rule that being at negative hp even in 3e doesn't mean that you're unconscious. It means that you're lying on the ground, desperately trying to hold your intestines in and screaming for your mother just as often as it means you're lying face down unconscious with blood pouring from...
