Why don't 3e and 4e use percentile dice for skills?

Bingo. The important part. Personally, I find the psychological aspect of it all to be the most interesting. How we decide what counts as a "meaningful" change in statistics. Personally, I think a +3 is pretty significant because its enough to get me to change how I make decisions. Even if...

Why don't 3e and 4e use percentile dice for skills?

That's not what he was looking for. He could have looked for that, but he didn't. He wasn't looking at the average number of times something doesn't happen before it does, he was looking at the point where the likelihood of something happening at least once was greater than .50. To calculate...

Why don't 3e and 4e use percentile dice for skills?

ggroy- for the first one, he took his 85% chance that the +3 won't matter, then calculated the chance that an event that's 85% likely will happen X times in a row, and ran it until he got to about 50%. The sequence is, .85, .723, .614, .522, .444. At this point it is 44.4% likely that no roll...

Why don't 3e and 4e use percentile dice for skills?

He assumed that 85% of the possible outcomes will be things that would have either been a success even without the +3, or things that are a failure in spite of the +3. In other words, if you need a 15 to succeed, and you have a base +5, you will fail on a 1 to 9 and succeed on a 10 to 20. If...

Why don't 3e and 4e use percentile dice for skills?

Well, a d20 is basically a percentile dice that works in 5% increments. So unless you have a pressing need to calculate with greater granularity than that, the d20 gets the job done. As for why you'd pick it instead of the percentile, there are two possible reasons. First, it keeps things...

Removing the link between class and ability

How far do you intend to go with this? Could people choose to have their hit points key off of a score other than constitution? Could they change the origins of their diplomacy score? Would you prefer to just go whole hog, and let people have generic, unlabeled ability scores like "attack"?

    An incredible game review article

I can understand rating Pandemic as complex. I don't think the rules themselves are so bad, but if you've ever played a game of Pandemic where you only won because you planned part of the game eight turns in advance in order to coordinate every action you'd need at exactly the time you needed...

Is an 18/19/20 an absolute must?

An 18, 19, or 20 is not mandatory. It is, however, very good. And getting one isn't very hard. So if you don't have one its worth asking why. You might have a good reason! But if you don't, you should go with at least an 18.

    Avengers Essentials

Yeah, the math on a Falchion with 1s and 2s becoming 3s isn't actually so bad. A Falchion normally averages 5 per [W], because a 1d4 averages 2.5. With that feat, the Falchion averages 6.5, because each individual d4 changes its distribution from 1, 2, 3, 4, to 3, 3, 3, 4, which averages 3.25...

3E & 4E Love and Hate Polls - What does it mean?

While this is probably true to a certain extent, I can't help but feel that it is probably less true than people online think. Its just got that aura about it that... that even if it wasn't true, we'd still tell ourselves that it was.

What are some examples of 'casual gamer' or 'mass market' tabletop RPG products?

Oh, and Aye Dark Overlord is a game where player LITERALLY roleplays being an evil overlord interrogating his minions after a failed quest, and where the other players literally roleplay being the worthless minions as they make excuses for their failure and try to pass the blame. There are some...

What are some examples of 'casual gamer' or 'mass market' tabletop RPG products?

I can't tell if this is one of those "SLIPPERY SLOPE! OH NOES!" posts, or a serious comment. Some of those would possibly qualify, though I'm not sure why Feudal is on the list. Seriously though. Taking Battlestar Galactica as an example, its a game where you have a character with a distinct...

What are some examples of 'casual gamer' or 'mass market' tabletop RPG products?

Battlestar Galactica: The Board Game. Aye Dark Overlord. Pretty much any board game where you take on the role of a character and interact with other people doing the same thing. There's probably going to be some pushback in this thread against counting adversarial boardgames where you sort...

Dragon 382 - Winning Races: Dusk Elf

This is an example of one of those issues where the proper response to complaints is: "If you don't like it, don't play it. Not everything in D&D was put there specifically for you. Some people like these things, and its not ruining the game if someone other than you has fun. On a certain...
