Falling out of love with your game

Yes. Specifically his argument that any protection of your rights is by definition an infringement of my right to violate your rights. Its a totally correct proposition, although I'm not a fan of what he went on to do with it.

Falling out of love with your game

Things that can change: 1. Your preferences may change. You might like horror stories, and then over time cease liking them so much, and therefore rate a game designed to tell horror stories lower than before. 2. Your beliefs about the degree to which a game actually matches your preferences...

3E & 4E Love and Hate Polls - What does it mean?

I'd take it to mean that most 4e players were at one time 3e players, but the reverse is not so.

    Why aren't RPGs poplular

How popular do you think RPGs ought to be? I mean, its a hobby. Its competing with a lot of other hobbies, starting with model trains and ending with programming Linux kernels. Not everyone has hobbies. But of the people who do, they can only have so many. We're probably more popular than...

Pennant of Heaven's Armies - I Win Button?

Short Answer: Yes, its broken. Long Answer: Those who stretch to find ways to get around the brokenness of this power are to be commended, because they're engaged in exactly the sort of thinking and reasoning a game like D&D requires. But ultimately the power is still broken because the...

D&D 4E How do I create an NPC Locksmith in 4e?

Alright... this is a place where 3e and 4e style are very different. In 3e, there was a certain assumption that an NPC must be at least THIS combat worthy in order to be THAT good at picking locks. So if you wanted an NPC with a +20 Open Locks modifier, you could reverse engineer and determine...

    Slow (the condition) seems weak

Its not a strong condition. Powers that inflict it generally do a little more damage than powers that inflict better conditions. That general rule isn't 100% true, and ranged powers that inflict Slow are sometimes weighted a little higher, I think. This is because Slow can be just as good as...

Expanding Roles - was Dropping Roles

Is the goal to get rid of roles, or to make all roles available to everyone? If the goal is to get rid of roles, well, I'm not sure what you should do because no matter what rules you set your players will choose to specialize. In my experience, "no roles" usually means "everyone is a...

Does Expertise "Feat Tax" even matter?

I considered doing it that way, but you have to know what the original chance of hitting was prior to Expertise. Good call using a range.

Dragon 381 - Class Acts: Invoker, Adherents of Kalandurren

Well, in this case, why does he have all this teleportation stuff? These are supposed to be Amoth themed powers. What makes them so?

Dragon 381 - Class Acts: Invoker, Adherents of Kalandurren

I had mixed opinions about this article. Am I supposed to already know who Amoth is? Am I supposed to already know why he's got a thing for teleportation? I like sets of themed powers, and for divine classes I really like the idea of sets of themed powers related to a particular god. But I...

Does Expertise "Feat Tax" even matter?

MrMyth- 1. I wasn't trying to represent the entire opposing viewpoint, just the one to which I was directly responding, which argued that increased defenses should be seen as increased tactical challenge. 2. Believe it or not, I am familiar with the "everything was fine until you guys screwed...

Do you always put your stat bumps in your two highest stats?

I always put my stat bonuses into my highest score, since there's pretty much nothing I could possibly get from a secondary ability score that's more important than hitting more. But as for my second stat bonus? That can go anywhere that I think will give me value. Some classes really rely on...

Does Expertise "Feat Tax" even matter?

How? Weapon property? Because Sure Strike doesn't have an effect on a hit other than damage. If Sure Strike were a feat (sacrifice ability score to damage, gain +2 to hit), it would be an awesome feat. Especially for leaders and controllers. But its not, its a power.

Does Expertise "Feat Tax" even matter?

Its worth noting, just for the record, that even in the most feverish dreams of the critics in this thread no one is envisioning a game where you hit on exactly the same number at every level versus an equal level foe. There's a natural fluctuation up and down as you gain and use new items...

Does Expertise "Feat Tax" even matter?

All monsters, by a slow progression from 0 points out of range to 3 points out of range, based on level. I thought we covered that. The problem with picking just one monster as some sort of exemplar is that high defense monsters are an ok thing. Its like if I said that the prices at my local...

Does Expertise "Feat Tax" even matter?

I see the value in that just fine (though the value is minimal given that you are probably always attempting to improve your chances of hitting, even against low defense foes, and in any case since this is an across the board issue you can't even use common tactics like targeting lower defenses...
