    4E Class Survivor - Round 3

    I voted. Only voted once.

Is my DM setting us up for failure? [Minor Spoilers for Demon Queen's Enclave]

How frustrated are the other players? If they're equally frustrated, just promote yourselves to level 16 or so, give yourselves new, improved gear, and show up at the session without telling him that you've done so. Or tell him, if you like. But don't give him a choice about it. I'm serious...

Pathfinder 1E Pathfinder: Is it evidence that new editions don't need to be that different?

I think Pathfinder demonstrates how strongly gamers want to be part of an actively published game instead of a discontinued one.

Comparing Heroic to Paragon teir play (how does it comparatively "feel"?)

Mechanically I have noticed a major increase in the synergies, effectiveness, and general dynamism of the characters. They simply have more tools available to them, and can carry out more complex and effective strategies. Stylistically, it hasn't been a major shift, but that's probably my...

    4E Class Survivor - Round 2

Oh, and to the extent that people know who's winning or losing prior to voting, that has an effect. If I can figure out prior to going into a vote that this round its going to be either the Shaman or the Warlord who goes down, then even if my most hated class is the Bard, I can skip voting for...

3.5e -- What REALLY needed fixing?

He can explain how he would adapt it, but basically with a 4e disease you start out infected, with a small penalty. Then every so often you make an endurance check. If you fail, you drop down along the track one step, taking an additional or greater penalty. If you succeed, you move up. In...

    4E Class Survivor - Round 2

Yeah... I'm kind of curious whether we'd get different results if we could restrict voting to people who are actively playing 4e. The warlord in particular is one that I think a lot of 3e fans dislike, but I'm not sure that's as true of 4e fans. I've also noticed that the warlord is a bit...

Just how good *IS* level X?

The following are estimates and averages, even where a range is indicated. Typical peasant 1, probably a minion Typical guardsman 2-6 Typical guard captain 4-8 Typical knight (or equivalent) 6-10 I'm not going to do named characters. I think the logic breaks down on those too much...

[D&D Collectors] Do you have everything? (And a poll about your buying habits)

Only what I can use. With a DDI subscription, that means that I buy very little. Past the original three books, I've only purchased the Delve book. Were I to buy more, I'd probably start with the DMG II and the Monster Manual II. I find it convenient to get character information from the...

Dragon 379 - Class Acts: Cleric Essentials

I'm not a fan of a lot of the article, and the problem is that I'm just not a fan of Channel Divinity and the whole penumbra of feats and powers surrounding it. Just... eh. I think Channel Divinity could have been cool, and on newer classes as a build its getting better and better, but...

[Forked from Mearls] MMOs, virtual vs. imaginary worlds (reply to Umbran)

I don't think that's the case. I don't think there's any reason to think that scheduling has become more or less difficult in the past few years. Once upon a time, RPGs had a near if not total monopoly on fantasy genre gaming. Now, they don't. Therefore they're losing market share...

Interesting Post by Mearls on rpg.net

I don't think Mearls is missing anything, because I don't take the rhetorical question "what would you do" as implying the answer "give up and die," or "stop publishing hex games and start publishing computer games." I take it more like the guy in post 4. Ask why computer games are suddenly...

Age of Worms AP and the Dread Necromancer

You don't want optimal because Rechan's right. It really will be cleric, cleric, cleric, cleric. Each cleric might be an entirely different build (I'd suggest on melee, one archer, one spellcaster that focuses on offense, one that focuses on defense), but that's how it goes. Clerics are...

    What is Shadow's schtick?

Eh... I still maintain that the Shadowfell is a merging of the "Plane of Shadow" with a "realm o' the dead" feel, and that what we've seen so far has been mostly "realm o' the dead," and the Shadow power source is emphasizing some of the "Plane of Shadow" stuff. See late 3e Shadow material for...

    Hand of Radiance too powerful?

Lets solve this once and for all... with math! Give me the actual attack bonus and damage of this character using Hand of Radiance, and I'll give you the expected damage per round using this power versus four given targets, adjusted for multiple rounds, critical hit chance, and the effect of...

Why Changes were made in 4e

That's not really what I'm talking about. I'm talking about the curve, where you start out not having enough spells per rounds of battle, but never invest in any non spell attack options because soon you'll have more spells than you need, and whatever feats or character choices you invest in...

Why Changes were made in 4e

I think they intentionally added adjectives to everything because they learned a lesson from Magic the Gathering about naming conventions in an environment in which you need multiple specific versions of the same general type of monster.

Dragon Con: A Sight of the Schism in action

I feel like there's a bit of a different vibe over at Catalyst, a general feeling that Catalyst is protecting games that otherwise would be dying. This creates a much more positive attitude. Disclaimer: my interaction with Catalyst is mostly, though not solely, through Battletech rather than...

Why Changes were made in 4e

I think Vancian magic could have been done well if it had been more Vancian. The big problems with vancian magic as done by D&D are 1. If the wizard doesn't have very many spells, he runs out of them way before he runs out of rounds of combat. Then he's got nothing he can do well. He sucks...

    Curious but lazy

I can't really answer that. Our group almost never experiences grind combats. It does happen on occasion, but not that often. When it does its usually with a solo that just isn't that interesting. But I've gotten better at spotting those coming, and WotC has gotten better at not writin them...
