    D&D 5E (2014) My D&D Next Experience at DDXP

Do you mind if I ask which of the following you mean by "killed dead?" 1. Had full hp, got hit, died. 2. Was wounded, got hit, went all the way to dead without getting to use the bleeding out rules.

D&D 4E A thought on WotC's imperative to continue to digitally support 4e.

Well, one possibility is that they'll use the DDi for 5e just like for 4e. And so the only cost associated with leaving 4e on the DDI will be the negligible cost of server space, leveraged against the benefit of whatever number of 4e players maintain their subscriptions.

After DDXP, how are you feeling about D&En?

A lot of 4e fans weren't entirely on board for the Essentials line. Which has meant, at least for some of us, that we've reacted hopefully to 5e. At the moment though, I'm not sure what to think. The marketing material seems heavily aimed at people who like older versions of D&D, which has...

    D&D 5E (2014) My D&D Next Experience at DDXP

Yeah, I remember the old days of wanting to join someone's game, and finding out that the DM was only comfortable with core material. I was really knowledgeable about 3e at the time, so I had a pretty good idea of what was broken and what wasn't... meaning that I was capable of self policing...

On smaller bonuses and the d20 mechanic

Technically there are a few other options. For example, if success at a task requires multiple die rolls, then even if a hero is only slightly better than a commoner on each individual die roll, that hero might still be significantly better than a commoner in terms of overall chance of success.

Please note that the first use of the word "forever" was yours.

D&D 4E What do you like about 4e healing?

Likes: 1. Healing scales with base hit points. I LOVE THIS. It fixes the problem of high hit point characters sucking down your healing. And it makes fragile characters actually fragile- if you spend your healing spell giving 15 hit points to the wizard, he's just going to lose them again...

After DDXP, how are you feeling about D&En?

Yeah, or even something as simple as the ability to float, or to create a magical box. Having a dozen or so options like that, combined with natural human creativity, tends to outstrip skill systems. Still... I dunno, I don't want to get too negative. If they slew the sacred cow of the +1...

After DDXP, how are you feeling about D&En?

It also has the potential to be the death of game balance. Its virtually impossible to balance two classes together when one of them follows a uniform system of rules, and another follows whatever it happens to say in a spell text box.

    D&D 5E (2014) My D&D Next Experience at DDXP

All the young people in my area play 4e. None of them play Essentials. I'm not sure they'd know what a Fortune Card was if it bit them in the face. I don't know whether they're buying a lot of products, or whether they outnumber the old people. I just know that when I see young gamers come...

3rd Party Support: Is an OGL even necessary?

NOT LEGAL ADVICE JUST A DISCUSSION OF CONCEPTS YOU COULD LEARN ABOUT ON WIKIPEDIA Games are protected by copyright, trademark, or by patent. No one ever buys patents. Trademark only applies to things that designate the origin of a good, which means that as long as you avoid key words and...

D&D 4E A thought on WotC's imperative to continue to digitally support 4e.

We constantly make purchasing decisions based on our (hopefully) reasonable expectations of the future behavior of the seller- particularly including matters like continued support for the product. If something happens to change that expectation, it is completely reasonable to downgrade, even...

Separate rules for PCs, monsters and NPCs

Well, they could make it impossible by including certain types of defensive roll systems. If PCs have offensive stats that need to be rolled versus NPC defensive targets, and if NPCs have offensive targets that need to be resisted by PC defensive stats, it would be extremely hard to build PCs...

    Stay Classy!!!

Well, given that they're releasing almost nothing but ad copy, and hoping people will draw positive conclusions from positive ad copy, it isn't surprising that people's conclusions aren't true. I'd bet that 9 out of 10 positive statements about 5e aren't true at this point, just like 9 out of...

After DDXP, how are you feeling about D&En?

I put down "meh," but I'm an optimistic "meh." Right now we're getting a lot of talk about the "feel" of the game. Well, talk like that is useless. There's something called the "mind projection fallacy" that everyone should be familiar with. Its when you perceive your own feelings about...

Alternative: Girls (females) in D&D/ Roleplaying

    1. Yes. 2. Yes. This one is difficult because its hard to do this without making oversensitive males feel like they're under attack. Its also particularly difficult because I do think that there's an appropriate place for goggling at pinup art, I just don't think that place is in a coed...

Okay, so *why* is EN World GM-centric?

Another perhaps minor point is that, in my experience, people who both GM and play tend to self identify as GMs. Probably for status reasons. And a lot of people both GM and play.

    Girls (Females) in D&D/Roleplaying

    1. 3 female out of 5, plus male DM. 2. Overall, probably 20% female. 3. They don't change the game. I'd say that we don't engage in the sort of juvenile humor that poorly masks a hostility and resentment towards women, but we never did that in the first place. 4. In my experience, no, women...

    3e Core Viability vs. 4e " Core " Viability

If I wanted to play a Monk in 4e, I'd be annoyed by core only. If I wanted to play a Fighter in 3e, I'd be annoyed by core only. If I were DMing a group of spellcasters in 3e, not even core only would save me.
