    Rituals too easy and cheap?

First off, I love the split between spells and rituals. Great concept, and many of the rituals seem to walk the line of "this is useful but not always" (e.g., Detect Object has a limited range and is much harder if you haven't seen the object) A few of the ritual however, seem to go too far...

Should I cancel amazon pre order and order from buy.com?

Yeah, I ordered the set yesterday from Buy with 1 day shipping to try and squeeze one out, but it says "sent to warehouse". If it doesn't ship by Friday, I will cancel.

How are you going to fix half-elves?

Prob. floating +2 ability AND free feat Ignoring skill bonuses, vision (which are same), COMPARE TO ELDRAIN (read Eldrain get = half-elf equivalent) + 1 trained skill = ? longsword prof = group diplomacy +1 will, +5 charm = ? Trance, Fey origin = can use human/elf feats Teleport = 1/2 elf at...

    Who's better at Multi-classing?

Hmm, not sure about multiclass wonders but they do seem gimped again. + 2 con, +2 cha (ok, same as others) +2 dip, +2 insight (same as other races) at will as an encounter (decent) group diplomacy (weak) can take feats of either human, elf, half-elf (this one could be ok, but maybe should give...

    Skills in Combat

While I believe in the "yes you can try" mantra, I also agree with primal and others that any mechanical benefits from skill checks in combat have to be weighed against powers. A lot of the balancing may be that a skill check is a standard action. For example, an encounter power may do a bunch...

Excerpt: You and Your Magic Items

Anyone else notice that the daily weapon abilities were minor and free actions? Looks like you can stack them with some juicy powers...

    Excerpt: Economies [merged]

Yes, I was hoping for a system like this, where the default is NO magic items in the party. You add some measure of the value of the magic items and this adds to the effective level of the party. You then send challenges at the party that match their effective level.

    Using skills in combat

Good example. So the mechanical effect of this could be: 1) orcs are knocked prone 2) orcs take some damage 3) orcs take some damage and are knocked prone 4) none of the above, but players gain combat advantage for one round against these orcs, 5) etc. All of those seem like possible options...

    Using skills in combat

Definitely agree with this, but was curious if 4e RAW will encourage the DM to just go with the flow and assign a small mechanical benefit to a successful skill check that seems to fit the moment (what I always do) or be more perscriptive. For instance, what does it mean to intimidate a foe...

    Using skills in combat

I have read some threads debating the uses/timing of powers outside of combat, but haven't seen anything on using skills in combat. Anyone who has glanced at the books in conventions know if 4e will discourage getting mechanical advantages from skills in combat? For example, you might think...

Keep on the Shadowfell character sheet scans

Mearls justed posted on the "WOTC must fix this" thread saying that the half-elf cross-class power was not included "due to space". Doesn't give us the exact rule, but suggests picking another class at-will and making it an encounter power.

    Random Skill Challenge Generator

Well, the exercise we are doing here helps with ideas but I think the way the challenge unfolds live really depends a lot on a group’s playstyle. For a real game I would modify things a bit. I'd add a description hinting at the more obscure appropriate skills. Also, I'd expand the appropriate...

    Random Skill Challenge Generator

Ok here's another one... “Batten Down the Hatches” Appropriate Skills (Moderate DC): Nature, Perception, Thievery, Arcana Unlockable Skills (Easy DC): Religion, Stealth Forbidden Skills: Streetwise All other skills (Hard DC) The challenge: A tribe of local Orcs have been tracking the PCs, and...

    Epic Destinies and Earth Giants

Exactly!! For Earth Titans: Thunderdome (Standard Encounter Recharge 6) Close Blast 1-3; a dome of stone 40' feet high is created in the blast area, trapping all in range. The dome lasts for 2 rounds, or if the dome takes 75hp of damage it crumbles. Now that would be cinematic -- split the...

    Random Skill Challenge Generator

Very interesting. I thought this was going to be some mechanical junk, but this is a cool creative technique. Love the DC distinction of Moderate for "appropriate" skills, Easy for "unlocked", Difficult for all others. Still leaves it open ended but helps prevent players from just spaming...

    Keep on the Shadowfell review?

Looks like some good pieces of info from a few people who have seen it, but has anyone come across a more traditional review of the module (either from a game store owner that has read it in full or a "professional" reviewer)?

    Traps preview

I guess I'm still hung up on the plain vanilla flavor of the level 26 trap. I mean, this can be made into a level 12 or whatever trap by lowering the damage, range, and dcs. There is nothing that screams "epic" to me here. The trap doesn't require any abilities that only epic level characters...

    Traps preview

Bishmon, completely agree. This type of situation seems like fun (thief trying to get critical number of successes as party is damaged by trap along with maybe fighting other stuff), but I'm also disappointed with the lack of variety in the countermeasures and the set up of the traps...
