A gripe about sidequests and loot in CRPGs

I've been having a a great deal of difficulty with several CRPGs lately, mostly because of the built-in requirement to pursue sidequests at the very beginning of the game, and by the absurd scatterings of loot that I'm expected to comb every inch of the scenery looking for. I follow the main...

    Video Cards: GeForce or Radeon?

Thanks. That's the direction I started heading in after looking online this morning. Carl

    Video Cards: GeForce or Radeon?

I can't go particularly high-end here. Which ones should I be looking at in the $100 - $150 range? I honestly have NO idea what other special features one would look for in a video card. I just want something that runs clean, fast games with good detail. Carl

    Video Cards: GeForce or Radeon?

Thinking it's time for a new gaming machine. Can someone tell me the pros and cons of the Nvidia GeForce and the ATI Radeon? Carl

    Favorite Christmas Music?

Nothing says Christmas like Bing Crosby. I think I've already seen Holiday Inn three times this year! Carl

    The Owl and the Pussycat

My wedding ceremony was officiated by two friends to whom all the details were left. One of them read this poem as part of it. Carl

    Your favorite westerns.

I'm pretty fond of most of the ones already listed. A couple others that haven't shown up yet: Sons of Katie Elder John Wayne, Dean Martin, Earl Holliman, and a young Dennis Hopper. I always liked this movie, though others consider it mediocre. I only just recently read that it was Wayne's...

    Please help, proofreaders needed.

If you still need help, drop me an email. CarlZog gmail A friend at the Univ. of Michigan called me last week with a similar, frantic request, and I found reading a college paper was a nice break from the books I'm editing. Good luck with the new research. What's the paper on? Carl

    Deep computer games?

Interesting that there's been little mention of strategy games -- which is actually what I had in mind when I posed the question. I had expected to hear things like "Master of Orion" and the Civ games, but "Planescape: Torment" is defiitely a thoughtful game in a different kind of way. Carl

    Deep computer games?

What's are the deepest computer games you ever played? Depth meaning the level of involvement or, possibly, complexity. What games really challenged you to think, and left you feeling like you really achieved something? Carl

    I love the internet

The worldwide market for ANYTHING. Worldwide communities of like-minded souls -- no matter WHAT you're interested in. The storehouse of information on EVERYTHING at your fingers. It is stunning to stop for a minute and think about how far-reaching the impacts of this has been in the last 10...

    Sailing Question...

That's not a practice I'm familiar with, though it is the underlying principle of modern radar. I suppose a cannon might give you a general bearing and distance from the echo return under the right conditions. But I wouldn't expect to decipher a whole lot more than that. Carl

    Sailing Question...

Yes. A ship sailing offshore operates around the clock. A ship's crew is broken up into two or possibly three watch groups. Watches generally lasted four hours. Time is kept with sand hourglasses and bell is rung every half hour to signify the passing of time. (Ring once after the first half...

Older games you'd love to see an update for.

Hostile Waters: Antaeus Rising. This was a brilliant underdog of a game that screamed out for multi-player support! Red Baron II. We're way overdue for a good, updated WWI flight sim. Planescape: Torment. There are still a wealth of other adventures to be experienced here. Space Hulk. Loved...

    Opinions on EVE-Online?

RPGs have a funny way of mirroring humanity. Some folks get back on the horse after it kicks them; others don't. Most games just don't kick hard enough to really test your mettle like this! If I played for 18 months and lost it all, would I jump back in for another try? If the game was that...

    Opinions on EVE-Online?

Very. I got the game up and running on another computer, just so I could take a look at it using a free 2-week promo I found online..... This is truly unbelievable. Yeah, this could suck up my life. Carl

    Your favorite post-apocolyptic movie?

Damnation Alley was the first movie I thought of when I read the title of this thread. It was a real movie, not "made-for-TV". I, too, loved this movie as a kid, but I haven't seen it in years. I've seen DVDs on ebay, but I think they're all bootleg. Both the incredibly cool ARK II vehicle...
