PAX East: running a "teach a new player D&D" game

I played one of the Dungeon Delves at PAX with a friend who'd never played D&D before and wanted to give it a try. It was a slam-bang encounter with no particular logic or story, no NPC interaction and very little skills used at all. But for an hour-long game, I think that's part of the...

Help! Players have avoided encounter - need an alternate.

A couple additional thoughts on vessel movement: Poles and sails will be useless as a means of propulsion in this circumstance. They will be moving so quickly downriver, any effort to connect with the bottom using a pole will either be fruitless or profoundly dangerous. As other have said a...

Another "blame it on D&D" story

"I guess it's just a matter of time before someone goes on a rampage shouting 'Leeroy Jenkins!' " -- quoted from comments on io9.

2nd Annual Dave Arneson Memorial Gameday: NYC, 3/27

As Age of Sail rules go, it's pretty simplistic, but it was the first set of rules I ever played for that era so it's got nostalgic value to me. Because of the simplicity, I yoinked some of its mechanics last summer for a game I ran in a maritime history class I was teaching. It actually...

Favourite OoP boardgames that you have managed to keep, reacquire or looking for.

The vast majority of my boardgames are OoP (SPI, AH, TSR, Metagaming), and were bought new in print. I keep them for a variety of reasons, but the top of the list: Of all of them, Panzerblitz has probably seen the most actual play. Dune and Divine Right are just really good games too...

    D&D is an Adult Game?

If I recall right, this is actually Gary's daughter.

2nd Annual Dave Arneson Memorial Gameday: NYC, 3/27

I'll be splitting my time that weekend between PAX in Boston and HAVOC in Shrewsbury, MA. that weekend, but in honor of Dave I may try run a game of "Don't Give Up the Ship" at HAVOC, assuming I get the minis painted by then! Carl

Boston gaming - PAX East needs RPG volunteers!

PC, I'm definitely going, and please count me in your Dread game if you run it. Despite its constant presence at gamedays, I still have not had a chance to play that. I'd love to run some stuff too, but I haven't figured out what the process is (if there is any) for submitting games. Anybody know?

    D&D is an Adult Game?

Yes. I was by no means an adult at the time, but I was sure wargaming before I was playing D&D. And I assure you, many wargames at the time were a LOT more complex than D&D!

campaign software - what do you use?

I just got OneNote two days ago after hearing about it for quite a while. I'm still learning my way around it, but it's looks pretty damn impressive. So far it's done an admirable job of allowing me to pull together a bunch of different resources for a one-shot I'm working on.

Rant about the cover of the 4e Player's Handbook

There was a tension inherent in this cover that has been missing since. You were dying to know what was going to happen next. You WANTED to be in that scene, even if only as a spectator to see if they got away with it. The real drama of the game was never better displayed than here, I think...

    Insanely productive planning

I'm resurrecting this old thread because I just picked up MS OneNote ultra cheap (MS Office Home & Student 2007 for $27!). I've barely started digging into it, but this really seems like an awesome tool. I'd love to hear more from people about how they're using it. And I'm wondering if people...

Did you ever play Empire of the Petal Throne?

I wanted to run it, but as others have mentioned, Tekumel is so culturally unique and detailed, I just never knew what to do with it. Every now and then, I think I should find a copy and revisit it; see if 28 years has given me a different perspective!

    Well Developed City?

I don't know Italy very well, but it certainly looks a lot like Venice. I suspect they just borrowed liberally from anything that gave them the feel they were looking for.

    How to Host a Murder/D&D

I had thought about doing something along these lines with the most obvious choice: Clue. But I never worked out the details in a way that I was satisfied with.

    What is 4E about?

An interesting take on the first three, which I'd mostly tend to agree with. I'm too new to 4e to take a stand on it, but I'm inclined to say that it may just be too early for anybody to define its legacy yet.

Subscribers now get the entire WAR OF THE BURNING SKY campaign saga - in 4E AND 3.5!

I think this is an insane bargain! As someone who just last week re-upped his CS account after an extended absence, I'm almost feeling a little guilty. Carl
