D&D 4E What would you want to see in 4E?

4ed should lose things like attacks of opportunity. I don't want to be forced to use a battle map and figurines to run combat. Any miniature war game elements should be either optional rules, or a separate game.

How would you design a magic system for a Harry Potter style of play?

I think for the d20 system that EN Publishing's Elements of Magic: Mythic Earth would work very well at emulating Harry Potter's style of magic. It (and Elements of Magic - Revised) seems to be inspired by the Ars Magica magic system. Spells are cast using several different magical skills, or...

    Alternate Poison Rules

Does anyone have any alternate rules for making poison more of a threat? I don't like that all poisons have the same onset time, and that after a couple of saves the poison is out of ones system. What would be a good way to model a longer duration and interval between saving throws?

    Parents Neglect - D&D named.....

It always warms my heart to hear about people taking their children for granted. I don't think it is too draconian to implement the sterilization of people convicted of felony child-abuse/neglect. If there was any justice in this life, people capable of this kind of behavior...

Ebberon - If not guns, then what?

For a good gun/magic compromise there are the magical firearms and munitions found in the book Arsenal by Perpetrated Press. That book has an implied setting that involves magical industrialization that is beyond anything that Eberron has, but there is no reason that the weapons in the book...

DMs are too easy on their players

I prefer to run games with a sense of plausibility. The fantastic may be possible, but where there are real, and often deadly, consequences for a characters actions. My personal experience with 3e/3.5e is that CR is great as a tool for power appraisal, but it should never get in the way of a...

Ebberon - If not guns, then what?

This still doesn't make eternal wands comparable to firearms. You can teach a conscripted peasent to fire a gun. You need a highly educated specialist (magewright) to use an eternal wand.

Ebberon - If not guns, then what?

Careful now! You are now treading the slippery slope of adding logic and tactics to a D&D world. Continuing down this path will lead to nothing but grief as all of your campaigns castled are undermined by earth elemental sappers. ;)

Ebberon - If not guns, then what?

Kurotowa, Eternal Wands require a UMD trained user, and even then they are prohibitively expensive.

Viral Marketing for RPGs...Where is it?

What I wonder, is why there doesn't seem to be any real effort to grow the appeal of tabletop rpgs in general. The niche-ness of tabletop rpgs is because it is sold as a niche game. The less that our society necessitates face-to-face interaction, the less you will see unnecessary face-to-face...

Viral Marketing for RPGs...Where is it?

You certainly may be correct at gauging what the majority of D&D players want out of a game, but if WOTC tries to make D&D compete directly with the MMORPG market, they are doomed to fail. I certainly hope that I am wrong about the market trend that I have seen developing over the last couple...

Viral Marketing for RPGs...Where is it?

Perhaps this was not clear in my original post, but the podcast that I mentioned just happened to make me think of the viral marketing trend and how it could benefit the RPG industry. The podcast didn't mention anything of the sort.

Viral Marketing for RPGs...Where is it?

There are any number of viral marketing campaigns right now that would work wonderfully to sell a pen and paper rpg like D&D. The campaigns that I am thinking of use the internet to leave puzzles and clues which slowly reveal the nature of what is being advertised. They are like a...

Viral Marketing for RPGs...Where is it?

In what ways are the market leaders actively growing the tabletop rpg market? With its focus on hack-and-slash style play, and a move towards a more web-centric gamespace, WOTC seems to be going in the wrong direction by making D&D more like a MMORPG. Ever since its World of Darkness...

Viral Marketing for RPGs...Where is it?

That sentiment sells people on MMORPGs. It doesn't really promote growth in the tabletop rpg hobby. I think making tabletop games more like MMORPGs is a death sentence to the hobby. New players need to be sold on the things that pen and paper games can do better than video games can.

Viral Marketing for RPGs...Where is it?

I have been listening to some older Fear the Boot podcasts, and Episode 37 got me thinking the about the marketing tactics used to create new interest in role playing games. Why don't we see viral marketing campaigns from the RPG market leaders (I am looking at you WOTC and White Wolf) to...

Methods for Handing Out More Feats

I want a somewhat balanced way to give my players more feats for their characters. Though, I worry that just upping feat progression to 1 feat per level will completely devalue the fighter class. I am contemplating making available some sort of magic item that would provide permanent access...

    What alignment is House?

Not to deviate too far off topic, but... there is no chance that Dexter Morgan is Chaotic Evil. I would place him as Lawful Evil. I can even accept Neutral Evil, but you will have to give a pretty convincing argument to get me to buy into Chaotic Evil. If Dexter is anything, he is...

    What alignment is House?

...and just to disagree with everyone, I believe that Dr. House is Neutral Evil. His actions are the epitome of selfish behavior. The fact that he saves lives is incidental. He does what he does for the pleasure of solving the mystery and proving to himself how intellectually superior he...

I am Lawful Good (with Chaotic Evil tendencies).
