The Hobbit: An Unexpected Journey reactions (SPOILERS)

I thought the scene set up a couple of storytelling things very nicely. 1) it is the first point where Bilbo finds he is a little braver than he thought he could be - trying to rescue the horses back from the trolls 2) Bilbo is the one who has his wits about him enough to delay the trolls when...

Combat vs knights in full plate

I'm not sure - I've seen people at the royal armouries fighting in plate and I have to say they seemed to be able to move pretty much as quickly as a person could. In hollywoodland the person in leather might be doing acrobatic tumbling that the plate armoured guy couldn't, but in terms of...

    [Trailer] Pacific Rim

I admit that giant monsters and giant robots is not my thing, so I wouldn't expect to like this movie - but it will probably be an interesting testing of the waters to see how far that kind of thing has to go at the moment.

Looking for a specific martial arts-esque movie

you could try 'crouching tiger hidden dragon' - heavy zen vibe and swords, very much about mystical training in martial arts. Or perhaps kung fu panda?

The Matrix - A false reputation.

The Assassins in the Heechee saga by Fred Pohl. http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Heechee (late 70's, early 80's) probably fit the bill.

The Hobbit: An Unexpected Journey reactions (SPOILERS)

My experience was different to that of Horacethegrey, and more like that of others who have posted thus far - I didn't find that the film 'felt' long or bogged down at any stage (in fact I rather like the few action films recently that have dared to have dialog sections rather than action...

Would you like to help me raise some money for Cancer Research?

Hi there ENworlders! For a change I'm not talking about gaming, but asking for some sponsorship. You may be familiar with the TV programme 'Strictly Come Dancing' (aka 'Dancing with the Stars' in the US). I'm taking part in one that has been organised by my employer - learning how to dance...

Combat vs knights in full plate

Heavy mace gets my vote - your best chance of injuring someone in plate armour quickly. A dagger between the joints sounds all fine and dandy, but unless you are assassinating someone in their sleep, good luck getting into position! Arguably, maces were undervalued in the very beginnings of D&D...

Fighter, Rogue, Blaster, Healer . . . Balanced?

I think you'd find the game is much easier to balance just by removing scribe scroll and craft wand feats.

    Experience Point: The Zeigarnik Effect

An interesting article and interesting thoughts based upon it. I know that my most terrible procrastination is not about starting things, it is about finishing them. I'm a rubbish completer (and I think I know why). Maybe I can think about how to start the completing of a thing :)

    I still have naughty points?`

we'll look into it - they should expire after 300 days. Maybe darjr could swing on by with an opinion.

    D&D 5E (2014) So I'm calling it.

Looks like a plain old edition war thread starter, and no useful comments have arisen, so clunk it goes.

You are using Bonetti's Defense against me, ah?

I used to play en garde. It didn't really allow the kind of thing the OP is after, but it did allow you to slash, thrust etc with your weapon, and different weapons had somewhat different capabilities. Cheers

Essen Spiel '12 - Pirates of the Chessex and other fun

Great write up, great pictures - I would think this is a newsworthy item.

    Windows 8?

Basically right. I use Win8 in a VM for some software development. Task Manager is considerably more powerful, but I still find the context switching with the new 'start screen' a pain in the neck. Once you've learned certain keyboard skills and hotkeys, Win8 on a PC becomes much more usable...

Running Call of Cthulhu For The First Time

I hope it has gone well, as I guess you've had your first session by now! The one additional bit of advice I'd give is to make sure that the players have set their expectations of CoC adventures appropriately - a game of investigation, fear, insanity and so forth is quite different from a...
