I played a crappy character...and it was great!

Have you seen the Traveller character that Morrus is playing at the moment? Check out http://www.enworld.org/forum/tabletop-gaming/329622-any-traveller-rpg-mongoose-version-fans-here.html He is a bitter old guy in a wheelchair that can't even shoot a stationary target with a pistol. Even given...

    Fudging is not your friend

Moderating note to all: Please remember that you don't have to change anyones mind or convert them to your view, nor are they attempting to convert you to their view. This isn't a debate where you are trying to win points. It is a friendly opportunity to share your experiences, so don't try...

Trail of Cthulhu - my first experiences

Another element about this game which distances it from D&D and BRP is that there are no attributes for the character - no strength, intelligence etc. just your skills. Although it seemed odd at first, it has actually proved very natural in play (and has removed a whole category of power gamer...

So, who wants to talk about new Doctor Who (spoilers likely)

Both those points bothered me intensely too, in the 'doesn't really make sense' way. At least the angels were back to doing what they did in Blink, rather than the weird and IMO stupid excursion we had in that two parter. Oh yes - one other thing that bothered me. That River has on her wrist a...

So, who wants to talk about new Doctor Who (spoilers likely)

Well, we've had the last episode with Amy and we now know that the Eridanis theory isn't true. Pretty sad episode all told.

D&D 5E (2014) Why the HP Threshold on Spells is a Bad Idea

It's funny - I think I automatically read it as CURRENT hit points, and quite liked the mechanic - the spells become good finishers rather than good openers. I hope it stays in like that!

CoC: Grace Under Pressure (Timing, Tips, Etc.)

Neat ideas there for submersible adventures! (my recent Cthulhu adventure benefitted from the presence of a hamster in the room - he was continually rustling and rattling around, making unsettling noises that suited the atmosphere!)

CoC: Grace Under Pressure (Timing, Tips, Etc.)

I've neither seen nor played it, so I can't give advice, but I can give you xp as a consolation prize! I hope someone who can help sees it, because I'd be interested in hearing more. Cheers

Trail of Cthulhu - my first experiences

I really can't recommend it highly enough - its a pleasure to read and a blast to play!

Trail of Cthulhu - my first experiences

One thing that I found hard to get my head around the first time I played gumshoe system as a player (so I made a special effort to explain it clearly to my new player) was the difference between the investigative abilities and the general abilities. They look pretty much the same on the...

So, who wants to talk about new Doctor Who (spoilers likely)

I really like the Eridanis theory.

The new Judge Dredd is awesome

I was planning to see it, but the most recent trailer suggested that it had slipped over into slow-mo ultraviolence, which put me off it. What proportion of blood and gore splattering would you say there is?

So, who wants to talk about new Doctor Who (spoilers likely)

I enjoyed tonights episode - the year of the slow invasion. At least up until the big reveal at the end, anyway. I loved the frustrating slow introduction of the cubes, and the subdued menace they created. I don't think they explained at all why some people got carried off to the spaceship...

Trail of Cthulhu - my first experiences

I can really recommend it. ThE mechanics are very lightweight, but do their job really well. Another example is the characters 'Drive'. How many times have you watched a horror movie and shouted "no, don't go down into the cellar!" your standard rpg player knows much to much to take those...

Any Traveller RPG (Mongoose version) fans here?

I used that trilogy with a different system, but it was among the most epic set of adventures I ran. Loved the feel of them.

Any Traveller RPG (Mongoose version) fans here?

I bought the mongoose traveller because I really enjoyed classic traveller back in the day. I've not had a chance to play it yet, but still enjoy the chargen 'minigame' ! I think they have improved it over the original wi more details to the background and a way to link together the pasts of...

Trail of Cthulhu - my first experiences

The PCs can also have "sources of stability" - NPCs in their life who they can go to and settle themselves, regaining some of their stability. The journalist in my game last night had officer dibble and his dear old granny. After one particularly awful evening (stability down to about 3!) he...

Trail of Cthulhu - my first experiences

Mathew_Freeman So, sanity is the degree to which you understand and believe the polite fiction of a rational universe. It gets eroded by exposure to Mythos horrors, and as you learn Cthulhu Mythos skills. The journalist PC in this game started with 12 sanity, and thus he had 4 'pillars of...

Trail of Cthulhu - my first experiences

So, I've just run my first game of Trail of Cthulhu tonight - and it went well! I've played in just one Gumshoe-based game before (Nights Black Agents) and I own and have read Ashen Stars, but Trail of Cthulhu is the first Gumshoe game I've run. Now, given that I was running the adventure from...

D&D 5E (2014) Parrying and Protecting versus spells and othe rstuff

I think that is quite possibly the kind of rules dissection that they want to avoid for dndNext... The whole "rulings, not rules" thing. If I was a DM I would decide wholly on a case by case basis, and if I were a player I'd hope that my DM would do the same thing. Heck, if a player was by a...
