It looks as though the Fire Trap and Explosive Runes spell have all been rolled into Glyph of Warding, so it might be worth taking a look at that spell for ideas.

How is using the spell as it is intended 'abusing' the spell? Now, you might argue that you don't want a poor mans 'maze' spell available as a 4th level spell, that seems reasonable. If the spell was changed to only banish things which have some other planar connection it would fit more with...

I didn't ignore it - I specifically included it in the quote. But, and this is a big but, fighters can get magic items that let them do tonnes of stuff outside of just hitting things. Always have, always will. I think my point stands. Better if both classes can be effective at both situations.
