D&D General Powering Up and Delayed Actions

Time for a "back in my day..." story. Back in my day, this actually happened: you had spells that took segments to cast, and if you acted during that time, you could move out of the way or disrupt the spell. I'd say that the game has pretty thoroughly moved away from that. But still, I just...

D&D 5E (2024) Should Bounded Accuracy apply to skill checks? Thoughts on an old Alexandrian article

I'll just say that my experience with the 5E skill system is that it's terrible. It's like a whole chapter of the book describing using and adjudicating skills was just left out of the game. When I think about a game like Blades in the Dark, I'm thinking of a game that handles skills, success...

EN World Columnist & Podcast Editor Darryl In Hospital

I hope you feel better and are able to go home soon. I was in the hospital a couple of times this year and you're never so happy as when you get to go home.

D&D General Harshest House Rule (in use)?

This is the key, and the only real answer. Honestly it's the answer for all house rules or different ways to run a game. If your players are having fun (and the DM/GM too) who is it to complain? When I see discussions like this I think about the games I like to run and to play in. And the one's...

D&D 5E (2024) Experienced DMs, how useful is the 2024 DMG to you?

I'm another one of those people who say "it's not out yet for me." But, it will have updated magic items. I suppose that will be useful. Can't say as I'm expecting to use anything else from it. I'll probably read the Greyhawk stuff and see what I remember about it. Edited to add: reading the...

D&D General Harshest House Rule (in use)?

I think this is a very telling example. In the case of Mordor, the only people who don't know anything really about Mordor (other than it's a scary place) are the hobbits. Gimli, Legolas, Aragorn, Boromir and Gandalf all know quite a bit about it. It all depends on who your character is and what...

D&D General Harshest House Rule (in use)?

How so? How is asking questions a problem? This genuinely boggles my mind.

D&D General Harshest House Rule (in use)?

I know what that means, but ... what does that mean for you? I could easily explain how I run a session with an example, but I think you're doing something very different. I suppose I should give up as I think we're playing a very different game, which I hope you have fun with.

D&D General Harshest House Rule (in use)?

Ah, many people play RPGs in scenes. It seems you don't. So if I were to listen in on part of your RPG session, what would it sound or look like?

D&D General Harshest House Rule (in use)?

I'm genuinely interested: what is it like then? If you were playing a scene, what would it sound like? It sounds very different than I am familiar with, so I'm interested to hear about it.

D&D General Harshest House Rule (in use)?

I just have to ask: what does "playing a game" mean? To me, asking and answering questions is the core game loop for most of a session. So what does playing the game look like to you?

    D&D 5E (2024) Why aren't you using 5e 2024?

It's not even out yet. And while it does things like make the Monk a playable class, and give fighters a way to get extra attacks or Advantage on attacks, what exactly is it doing better? Some spells are cleaned up but some are also unbalanced. And when I look at games like Fabula Ultima or...

    Best wuxia RPG?

This is such a good book. At the start of it you get one view of the way the world works. That is really changed by the end of it. And yes, I tear up at the scene you're talking about every time.

    Best wuxia RPG?

May I suggest Into the Badlands as something to watch along the same lines. I really liked it, although the last half season dropped off.

Blades in the Dark Gets First Official Expansion

I picked this up a couple of days ago. There is a lot of stuff here. Changes to pretty much all the core mechanics. I'm seriously going to have to give it some thought. I have only run a Scum and Villainy game but have played a fair bit of Blades, so I think I can get a good handle on things. I...

When Do the 5E “Ride or Die” Folks Become Grogs Like The Rest of Us in “D&D Older Editions” And When Do We Get D&D 5E Flair for Posts?

Honestly the 4E stuff goes on to this day. I just added some folks to my ignore list because I didn't want to fight about an edition that's long out of print. I really do think that 5E has been received much nicer, though. There are people who hate it, like any edition, but the design managed...

Trying to Describe "Narrative-Style Gameplay" to a Current Player in Real-World Terms

I have played several campaigns of FFG's Star Wars and I have to say that your player isn't wrong. But neither are you. Star Wars isn't a game about getting gear and loot and equipment progression. I think the series that uses it the most is the Mandalorian and at some point they just lost sight...

    D&D 5E (2014) Reducing Power Gaming

I have to agree here. I love me some PF2. I'm running it and I would really like to play it more but it doesn't seem to deal with the OP issues. I'd really suggest they look at Shadowdark for a 5E chassis on a much lighter and lower powered game.

When Do the 5E “Ride or Die” Folks Become Grogs Like The Rest of Us in “D&D Older Editions” And When Do We Get D&D 5E Flair for Posts?

I think this is an interesting discussion. I find it really interesting because I'm not sure what the selling point of the new 5.5E actually is. I've been going through the new PHB and I see major development with the new fighting styles/weapon properties and then a lot of other stuff that ... I...

    D&D 5E (2014) Reducing Power Gaming

The big question I want to ask is: what do your players think about this? Are they having fun with 5E as-is? If so, you have a problem. The DM gets to have fun like everyone else, but if the players want something you don't want to give them, that's a problem. My suggestion is to take a look at...
