    The Unstoppable Black Dragon

Thanks again Mike. One person commented: "...it often seemed as if PCs were either 'coasting' through adventuring challenges in the new edition, or 'completely terrified' by foes that wildly overmatched them." I'm thinking this is the result of throwing a level 4 solo at them, even if it...

    The Unstoppable Black Dragon

Thanks for the response Mike, but I get the feeling that this was a "Disposable Dragon" (which I am frequently Bothered About). What was the water in the room for? Could the dragon retreat? Could he fly around the room? Why was he in the room in the first place? Also, what about sleep...

    The Unstoppable Black Dragon

So the dragon decided to hole himself up in a location he can't maneuver in? I find that hard to believe. With everything said about maneuverability and battlefield control, why wouldn't the dragon find a location more suitable for his abilities? If I were running the game, I would make...

    The Unstoppable Black Dragon

Not sure about 4th edition, but normally you can't aid another with ranged attacks. There's no reason for the dragon to base the party unless they ground it somehow.

    The Unstoppable Black Dragon

Mobility Question: With the exception of sleep, how did the party ground the dragon? Did the DMs run the dragons on the ground or in the air?

    The Unstoppable Black Dragon

Sleep Question: If you're submerged in water when you fall asleep, will you wake up? Was there a water source in the black dragon encounter? If you wake up when submerged in water, if I were running a black dragon I would have him fly into a water source on his turn before he fell asleep...

    The Unstoppable Black Dragon

Did anyone defeat the black dragon at D&D XP? How did you do it? With everything said about positioning in 4th edition, I would think there is no way the pregen party could defeat the black dragon. I'm going to assume the cave he's in is at least 15 feet high. Why? Because dragons aren't...

D&D 4E Kill 200 Kobolds! (Or running 4E with just DDXP info)

The Spined Devil is level 7. I think it might be interesting to mimic the scale of 7th level by simply bumping everyone up 30 hit points (6 * 5) and giving everyone a +3 (6 * 1/2) to all skills, defenses and to hits and see how they fair against 4 spined devils. But even just going up against...

D&D 4E Kill 200 Kobolds! (Or running 4E with just DDXP info)

The internet is great. We get to read and hear about information compiled together probably faster than people who are at D&D XP. Our one drawback is that while we can talk about the game they're actually there playing it! Will anyone be running some combats this weekend using the new...

Design Leadership from 1st to 2nd to 3rd to 4th

Again, I'm not trying to turn this into the specifics of why 4th is like 2nd. I'm trying to discuss the differences in leadership transitions between editions. Your reply will threadjack this post, because I have not seen anything specific that has been presented by anyone to indicate...

Design Leadership from 1st to 2nd to 3rd to 4th

But what about from 1st to 2nd? And is it more comforting that the same manager is leading the change, rather than if it were a completely different company with new staff? Skip and Sean were a part of the 3rd edition design team. I think the fact that Mearls was chosen to head Iron Heroes...

Design Leadership from 1st to 2nd to 3rd to 4th

I have a friend who is, IMO, a little paranoid about the design of 4th edition. One analogy he frequently makes is that 4th edition will be to 3rd edition what 2nd edition was to 1st. My friend did not like 2nd edition. There were many reasons mechanically, and the point of this thread really...

    D&D 4E ConQuest Sac- 4e Demo!!!

Here is the email we received on the ConQuest Sac mailing list from 1/31: "Hello all- I wanted to let everyone know that there will be a D&D miniatures demo on the Friday at Conquest Sacramento using the new updated rules, if you are not interested in the skirmish game you still might be...

    D&D 4E ConQuest Sac- 4e Demo!!!

I signed up last September. Our group (about 20) normally only goes to KublaCon, but last year's ConQuest Sac was so good I recommended we all try to attend this year.

    Design & Development: Halflings [merged]

    Static vs. Tailored Encounters

The game isn't over, you just have some dead characters eaten by a rare appearance of a Balrog. If the characters had any depth then they would have relatives or friends who would investigate what happened to them. New character can come in and hear rumors of this balrog, and find out what...

    Dungeon-Urban-Wilderness as GDS

One of the players in my group dislikes Eberron and he leans very heavily towards simulationism. Along with concepts like 'moving at the speed of plot' and noir's dependence on overwhelming cities, he also didn't like the emphasis of an Indiana Jones style red line of quick travel. (You can...

    Dungeon-Urban-Wilderness as GDS

As D&D is being redesigned, I've given more thought about RPG design in general. Simulationism = Wilderness Adventure. DMs have to come up with a lot of objective setting details here on the fly, as players have a much larger area they can freely explore. Terrain and groups. Parties can...

    D&D 4E 4E Streamlining Good for Simulationism?

I took a hiatus from D&D around the time 3.5 was announced (SWG and WoW gladly accepted me at their table). At the tabletop I tried out Chainmail and then D&D Miniatures in 2003 (and Eberron brought me back to the RPG in 2004). In Chainmail, distances were expressed in inches, and hit points...

    D&D 4E DM Fiat Supreme in 4e

If someone could show me one specific rule that has been verified that increases DM fiat and makes the rules intentionally grey then this conversation would be far more interesting to me.
