    15 Minute NPCs

So character do not get more complex as you go up in levels? Isn't that a default assumption of D&D? More feats, more talents, more spells/maneuvers, more magic items to choose from? Is all of that just going away now? Or are you the one making the assumption? Again, not that much...

But it's just a few pages that could easily have been in the core 3.5 DMG or PHB. I don't see how changing the way stats are generated was necessary.

The stats are exactly the same though, nothing is trimmed. The creation 'guidelines' are the same in both 3.5 RAW and in the PHB 2, but the PHB 2 offers suggestions and tables with generation priorities.

The PHB 2 rules are actually for NPCs, using a stat array and NPC wealth levels for equipment. What other differences are there in 3.5?

    15 Minute NPCs

I'd like to point out that the designers have to make publishable stats all the time. It's their job. So of course they're going to want something that makes their job easier. But how is that better for me? How does making it easier for them make it easier for me? And I'm not that fast when...

    15 Minute NPCs

Yes. The goal is to use a ruleset that defines the world. Fate determines the location of NPCs, their motivations, their strengths, their weaknesses, their goals, etc. NPCs are not tailored for the purpose of climactic combat or to please the theme of the story. They just are what they are...

    15 Minute NPCs

All of the decisions are made, that's the important part. The rest is in editing. You can very easily fix this stat block without having to come back to me and ask "what exactly did you want to do?" Lower the skills a little for cross class, factor in the +2 from the ring of protection. I...

    15 Minute NPCs

No, I built it from scratch using the PHB 2. I did use a stock blank stat block as a base, hence the 'scent', but that probably made it more difficult. I didn't use it for the gnome. And I picked cleric 10 to illustrate that you don't need to make NPCs that are mechanically perfect and...

It Starts (Splatbooks - Martial Power in October)

My guess is that the book will be more of a "Maneuvers Compendium" than a Complete 4E Warrior book. Maybe the PHB doesn't have as many maneuvers are it does spells?

    15 Minute NPCs

I'm talking about GDS simulationism, where the setting is made from the rules, and in this case the rules and tables create the NPCs of the world. The DM does not arbitrarily build NPCs based on his own motivations and agenda for story. Instead he develops what is natural from the tables (a...

    15 Minute NPCs

Now to be fair, it's a classed NPC. Why spend 90 minutes fine tuning a CR 15 to be challenging to a party of 15th level characters when you can just build a CR 17 or 18 in 15 minutes who isn't optimized?

    15 Minute NPCs

OK, I set the clock at half an hour, and here's what I came up with. There are probably errors, but I think this guy could be an interesting NPC and a decent fight with a couple of other NPCs along with him. Vitriol Prilion Male human cleric 10, sorcerer (metamagic specialist) 4, mystic...

    15 Minute NPCs

OK, I'll start now. But he doesn't need to stand alone against a party for 5 rounds. That's a balance issue that I'm not concerned about. I usually throw multiple enemies at the party, which is suddenly a wild new concept in 4th edition.

    15 Minute NPCs

I don't see this as a change to the rules though. It's just a change to the way the NPCs are generated. In the PHB 2 the recommendations and guidelines are presented better than in the DMG, but that doesn't mean the NPCs are going to be any weaker. In fact, due to the roles and focus, the...

    15 Minute NPCs

So does every NPC in your game have the same point buy? The PHB 2 presents a method (which could use a little work for multiclassing and variety in feats/spells/skills) for faster to build NPCs. That was part of the selling point of the PHB 2. In that section it says you can make NPCs in 5...

    15 Minute NPCs

It doesn't qualify. One class, and it can be prestige. Do not tell me the point buy. And it sounds like your 'addicton to feats' is catering to gamism. That is not my style, and if you like that then speed is not your priority when it comes to making builds. The people who complain about...

    15 Minute NPCs

Different players have different styles. You sound like you have more gamist tendencies and look for balance and fairness when roleplaying. No one style is better than the other.

It's approximately 90% complete. Let me try again. Any suggestions for the race and class?

    D&D 4E Why I'm "Meh" About 4E

If you currently pick and choose which races are available in your 3.5 campaigns, why would this change if you switched to 4E?
