A Question: Why have you never GMed?

So I am working on a project and looking for some input. This is for any TTRPG players who have NEVER been a GM. What is stopping you? This isn't meant as an attack or a judgement. I am looking to address "common" reasons why people who have been playing for any length of time have never taken...

How Relevant is Gencon (or Any Con)?

So Covid has killed our locals Cons, which ran twice a year and I miss them dearly. They are smaller, local cons, so hype and marketing isnt really a part of why anyone goes to them. What I most miss are getting to play games that I don't have the chance to aty my own table, the dealer room, and...

D&D General What is the purpose of race/heritage?

It serves as a touchstone. You can't color outside the lines without lines.

D&D 5E (2024) The Half Orc. Are they still needed?

Honestly I don't want the game to go so modular. It's one of the things that turns me off Pathfinder tbh.

D&D 5E (2024) The Half Orc. Are they still needed?

I had been thinking about this. What was the impetus of introducing Half-Orcs into AD&D? Half-Elves have Tolkien. Are Half-Orcs also cribbed from somewhere or are they an actual original creation?

D&D General Does Character Lifespan Even Matter?

No PCs no, but I am a forever DM. So for me, lifespans matter more.

D&D 5E (2024) The Half Orc. Are they still needed?

Well, needed in that they can fill a particular archetype niche, that of a big bruiser, sorta rough around the edges.

D&D General Does Character Lifespan Even Matter?

It mattered for 1st ed Ghosts and some spells and magic items over the years. It more matters for flavor and for NPCs.

D&D 5E (2024) The Half Orc. Are they still needed?

Preface: The larger issue of "race" in DnD and how it is changing and will be presented differently in 5+ed is it's own topic. The issue of "mixed race" and how it is presented, such as the half-elf, half-orc, and those of more extended lineage, such as Aasimar and Tieflings is it's own topic...

A Review of The New Hunter The Reckoning

H:tR, with its Imbued was OWoD. NWoD is Hunter: The Vigil. Now, you may mean Hunter's Hunted, which predated H:tR. To each their own. I really liked having the PCs be "touched by G-d?" and it being super vague and mentally harmful to get too close to The Messengers. I think it was a unique...

A Review of The New Hunter The Reckoning

I have to admit to being disappointed. I would have been interested if we were getting an update the The Imbued.

D&D 5E (2014) What kinds of design space is there in alignments?

So for me, items tied to alignment, especially sentient or semi sentient ones, are about the last holdout for alignment demands mechanically. If I did use such items, I would likely turn the alignment dial to be more behavioral specific than just "The sword is LE". For example, instead of having...

    D&D General Why isn't there a spellcasting ability ?

Creating a 7th stat for spellcasters would demand they put their best stat there at the expense of their other stats because it would likely be that, like Constitution, very few if any skills would be tied to it.

D&D General Why Do People Hate Gnomes?

    Hot yikes on that description.

D&D General Why Do People Hate Gnomes?

In one of my campaigns to explain Gnomes I had that just at one point they appeared and integrated into nearby elf (Forest Gnome) and Dwarf (Rock Gnome) communities, taking on their culture for the most part. It was revealed later that these gnomes were descendants of dissident Deep Gnomes...

D&D 5E (2014) When do you hide and when do you reveal DCs?

So this came up at my game this week and it has me thinking. When do you reveal the DC for a roll made by the PCs? Do you tell them say AC or the DC for a saving throw or skill check before the roll? After the roll? Wait until after the encounter is over? Not reveal at all, just success or...

Wizards of the Coast Employees Walk Out Over Hasbro's 'Tone-Deaf' Response to Overturning of Roe v. Wade

I am just curious to know if anyone can point out the inciting "tone deaf" response by Hasbro. As a rule, corporate messaging on contentious political issues means a lot less to me than how said corporation may be funding political causes behind the scenes. Don't tell me you find these rulings...

D&D 5E (2014) Caution in Too Much Fun

I guess this can be a goal at small tables. I have six players at my current table. In combats, when it's not a given player's turn, it's gonna be boring. That's gonna happen. Its why I advocate for anything that can reasonably help speed combat up.

D&D 5E (2014) Caution in Too Much Fun

These are good points. No activity at your table will please everyone at all times. An after action report, even just asking for simple feedback, can help identify what sorts of game activities draw in the people at your table. More my point was, unless everyone at the table enjoys a given...
