How Accommodating to Player Preferences Should the GM Be?

Does it harm the fidelity of the setting? Is it a concept that inherently creates more work for the rest of the table? Are they the only player that wants to do this? If the first two are no and the third one is yes, then you can probably proceed. You may find that some negotiation may smooth...

    AD&D 1E Favorite Obscure Rules from TSR-era D&D

Honestly for me the best version of saves was 3rd. Reflex/Fortitude/Willpower. The old school saves were rather arbitrary in classifications in my experience. But then again, I don't much care for old school design due to the disparate systems. The advent of 3rd ed / d20 with a central system...

    AD&D 1E Favorite Obscure Rules from TSR-era D&D

Totally can grok how it's just what some are looking for. But for me, it's just more bookkeeping on my end as GM. The juice aint worth the squeezing, but ymmv.

D&D 5E (2024) Which Setting Featured Already in 5E Do You Want a New Supplement For?

If I was only picking one, it would be Spelljammer. Give us some actual rules for ships.

    AD&D 1E Favorite Obscure Rules from TSR-era D&D

Oh yeah. The whole concept of different rates of advancement dependent on class was such a mess. Not only the actual amounts to level varying, but that some classes had an easier time earning bonus XP than others.

The AI Red Scare is only harming artists and needs to stop.

Nuclear power also has many possibilities, but I would be a fool to not be keenly aware of it's dangers first and foremost. I don't think of it from only one point of view. Assuming that just because my concerns outweigh the positives I can acknowledge means I am blind to them is reductive and...

The AI Red Scare is only harming artists and needs to stop.

That is my position. Harsh restrictions yes, but I am not so naive to think the technology is leaving.

The AI Red Scare is only harming artists and needs to stop.

"AI doesn't kill culture. People kill culture."

The AI Red Scare is only harming artists and needs to stop.

I feel bad sometimes. I have people I care about who are keen on AI. But yeah. It is literally an existential threat to human culture. It must be fought.

    World Anvil. Worth a subscription?

Just looking to see if there are any satisfied and unsatisfied subscribers. I have a free account. Is it world spending money for any of the subscription levels for the expanded tools? I am a GM often running more than one campaign and could also use it as a place to put worldbuilding thoughts...

D&D General What is the Quintissential D&D Mascot Monster?

So it should be something that ahs its origins in D&D. So Dragons or Goblins are out. I'd go with Mimic. Specifically the image of the treasure chest with teeth.

D&D Movie/TV Paramount+ Will Not Proceed with Dungeons & Dragons Live-Action TV Show

I'm definitely not of the "f*ck WotC/Hasbro" camp but I can't help but feel that all their inept bumbling of fan goodwill over the last couple years killed a very real and intangible resource of fan enthusiasm which could have helped push these sorts of projects over the finishline.

    D&D General What are humans?

Typically, human's are the baseline from which other PC/NPC species are meant to contrast. A nice change of pace when worldbuilding is to try and shift that narrative. I ran a campaign some years ago where humans were absent from the continent where the game was set until "recently". They came...

The hoops required to be a Bard in 1st ed are still just so amusing goofy. The height of letting flavour dictate design.

D&D 5E (2014) Hasbro CEO Chris Cocks Would Like To Explore Kara-Tur

Right, but why Kara Tur is basically my question. Plenty of games in the space are taking swings at non-Euro settings for 5e. The real catch here is it worth the effort to rehab a setting which was made by at best well meaning enthusiasts for Asia through a western lens tropes? Given how...

D&D 5E (2014) Hasbro CEO Chris Cocks Would Like To Explore Kara-Tur

The real question is: Why make this? What attracts you to the setting? Is it the cultures that inspired the tropes or is it the tropes?

D&D 5E (2014) Hasbro CEO Chris Cocks Would Like To Explore Kara-Tur

I would expect that how "the same" the material was would be the deciding factor. While the connection the creators have to cultural inspirations do matter a good deal, in an ideal world, they are also knowledgeable.

D&D 5E (2014) Hasbro CEO Chris Cocks Would Like To Explore Kara-Tur

It will be challenging to square the circle of engaging in the cultural sources respectfully while still trying to call back to the old material. If you have to make only one side truly happy, better to err on respecting cultural sources. It is future proofing if you think about it.

D&D General What it means for a race to end up in the PHB, its has huge significance

For me, the species in the PHB are meant to be default ones, both as choices for PCs but also for NPC cultures that are expected to be encountered and interacted with. What I am more curious about is not so much how it will impact players but GMs and worldbuilding going forward.

No More Massive Tomes of Rules

Just to weigh in, for me, its the size of individual books. Buying a 500+ tome just isnt a turn on for me these days. I'd rather that be spread among 2-3, hell 4 separate releases.
