    Sorcerers too powerful?

I'm confused...why are some claiming Sorcerer's have poor defences? Poor compared to what, exactly? :) Frex, a either Sorcerer build is liable to have an 18 in an AC stat. One feat later, they have AC 16...right in the same ballpark as other strikers and controllers. Where's the poor-ness?

Unhappy Pally - Righteous Rage + Vicious Weapon

Excellent idea. ..but you'd still have to do something with Divine Challenge and Lay On Hands. DC is a core ability of the Paladin, as it's the central thing making them a "Defender". So...do you move that to their new "base stat" of Strength? Doesn't fit. Instead, allow the player to...

Unhappy Pally - Righteous Rage + Vicious Weapon

As a default "house rule" I plan on giving PCs weapons-that-are-also-implements as a matter of course. It's just cooler, and there's no balance problems.

    Whats your favorite tier?

Heroic! .....'cause that's all I've played so far. :( 10 months, 5 different groups, and yet no PC over 4th level. Now that's a broad range of experience, eh? :P

    D&D 4E Confirming the 4e Math, Stage 1: Iconics

Can't we just "brute force" the wealth estimation? That is, start a PC at 1st and start giving him treasure parcels as he levels up, automatically disenchanting magic items that are "X" levels lower than him. Go up to 24th level (Stalker0's target level). I mean sure, this would take time to...

    D&D 4E Confirming the 4e Math, Stage 1: Iconics

Cool. Understood, Stalker0! (I agree that magic items might be the really problematic "option list". For example: Does the PC prioritize RFW over AC, or Atk over FWR? How do you standardize that?)

...or a 1e Ring of Invisibility! Awesomeness.

    D&D 4E Confirming the 4e Math, Stage 1: Iconics

Great start, stalker0! Like others here, I would suggest:Use the array 16/16/12/12/10/8. It's simply more widely used. A more realistic list of magic items. The DMG system low-balls it significantly. Go 25th level, not 21st. The jump in power at 21st level is large...all the math threads...

    Magic Items without plusses?

Didn't "ancestral weapons" (IIRC) do something like this in 3.5e?

Anyone else not feel "the grind"

FWIW (and Karinsdad has discussed this in other threads), the longtooth shifter cleric *can* pull off the combo of ranged/melee cleric, as their stat bonuses line up perfectly and dumping Cha for a Cleric is No Big Deal(tm). But there are plenty of other builds that can't, so I think the point...

Ongoing damage and saves in a surprise round?

That's patently not true. The PH1 does - indeed - indicate that you don't get a turn if surprised. See the order of actions (PH1 - p266-267).

    What monsters really know?

Err...are you sure, frankthedm? The quoted power says: "Until the end of your next turn, the next melee or ranged attack against you instead targets an enemy adjacent to you other than the attacker." That is, the "next attack the user suffers NEED NOT BE targeted at Deflecting Thunder's...

Ongoing damage and saves in a surprise round?

Errr? Surprised creatures get an action in the surprise round? You'll have to point out where you see that. :) Surprised creatures don't have a turn until after the surprise round is finished. Thus they can't be affected by ongoing damage (or make a save, etc).

    What monsters really know?

I think Inyssius has the right of it. The target is not affected by the power, so it doesnt know about the powers effects.

Ongoing damage and saves in a surprise round?

Do surprised people get a turn during the surprise round? You'll notice that in the order of actions (p266-267), surprised people don't take their turns until after surprise round actions are finished. Only at the Start of Your Turn do you take ongoing damage. If you don't have a turn, you...

Errors from previous editions which got repeated.

It's clear that the "+1 sword" is a sacred cow....but they've successfully killed sacred cows before. For me, the thing that +X magic items do is "expose the underlieing machinery" of the game mechanics, and remove the suspension of disbelief. We all know a PC needs a certain "+" by a certain...

Ongoing damage and saves in a surprise round?

Is it your turn yet? If you don't get to act, have you taken your turn?

Errors from previous editions which got repeated.

Maybe...maybe not. If it were done right, the pain (and riots) would be mitigated by the ease of the system, as well as the simple coolness factor of having magic tiems that actually did stuff. As it is (and as it has been for every edition of D&D), magic items aren't simply "cool". They are...

Errors from previous editions which got repeated.

Back to the OP's question (I think)-- A repeated mistake in editions of D&D: Allowing magic items to add to your numerical stats; i.e. +1 Longswords (or +2, +3, etc) or <shudder> a Belt of Strength +4. Magic items simply shouldn't add anything to a numerical statistic, as it always makes...

Sneak Attack Damage and Critical Hits
