    "loseing is not cost effective"

It may be because yer fightin' kobolds. From earlier editions we know that kobolds drop after one hit, even a weak one. In 4e, that's not th' case. ...and I'm not sure that's a Good Thing(tm).

    "loseing is not cost effective"

Ah. I see. Allow me to shorten that <chuckle>: Shadar Kai Swordmage Aasamar Invoker Gnome Rouge <sic> Dwarf Warlord Half elf Warlock ...much better. B-) You've got 1 defender, 1 leader, 2 strikers, and a controller. A good balance! The 4e PC optimization board approves. :) Now: You've...

    "loseing is not cost effective"

No problem for me, at any rate. As for your original question: Dailies are meant to be the "Big Guns", so you use them judiciously. ...But if you need to use 'em, go ahead! In 4e, hps come and go pretty regularly, so maybe you're just "freaking out" too much when you and your party gets...

D&D 4E Paladins - The first 4e class to fail

Just from a simplicity and symetry argument, using one stat for all attacks (Cha) and two stats for power secondary effects (Wis or Str) seems best. Still two builds, but only one paladin. Being a Paladin means being a defender first. So leave DC as Cha-based. Then for each build (Str or...

D&D 4E Paladins - The first 4e class to fail

The way I've seen combats go down, a defender with just a bit of healing would have been welcome. We often wish we had just one more way to activate a healing surge.

D&D 4E How to build encounters in 4e (aka Only you can prevent Grindspace!)

I'd love to have that kind of problem. (Twice a week gaming? Great-goggly-moggly! I feel lucky if a group meets twice a month!)

D&D 4E How long are your 4e combats taking, real time?

It continues to be interesting to see how long (or short!) people's combats are. ...or how long or short people *think* combats are. I wish there was some way to take observer bias out of this informal survey. :) Last night our combat in Dr. Spunj's game took about 2 hours. It was a fairly...

How have you used terrain to make combat more tactically interesting & exciting?

(For those of you following along at home, the following is the player talking to his DM. My intent is to "think out loud", rather than "be obnoxious". :)) True. Of course, if the encounter is in waves - with some expectation that some monsters won't even "make it to the party" - the XP budget...

How have you used terrain to make combat more tactically interesting & exciting?

Sure. No tight grouping for the monsters works wonders. :) ....and hey: it's alright for the monsters t' get blown up once in a while. :D

How have you used terrain to make combat more tactically interesting & exciting?

Hmmm. As a DM myself, I understand the sentiment....but I think you may be missing my point. Allowing the PCs time to react to the surroundings makes the surroundings more meaningful. If the monsters start right on top of the PCs, terrain matters lots less => you might as well have a...

How have you used terrain to make combat more tactically interesting & exciting?

Good thread, DrSpunj! Agreed. ...and that's not casting aspersions on my DM. (I really enjoy his game!) Setting up "dynamic" combats are hard, methinks, and I've seen others have a hard time of it too. Part of the problem is that the monsters almost always have the advantage. Although that...

D&D 4E How long are your 4e combats taking, real time?

...and yet I continue to see that in our games. Bizarre. I'd love to be a fly-on-the-wall in some of these "45 minute" combats that purport to be above the PC's level...

D&D 4E How long are your 4e combats taking, real time?

That's interesting. FWIW: The DM is actually the guy (or gal!) that's rolling the most dice, moving the most tokens, and taking the most time. It's just a question of numbers: the DM has more peices to keep track of than players do. When I timed how long a recent battle took, the DM was...

    Minion conversion rules

Helpful! Thanks. But "why, oh why...!" didn't they put the minion creature template in the DMG? Why? <grumble, grumble...to make you buy another book....grumble, grumble>

Are Archer Rangers getting the Shaft?

I'm curious: CapnZapp, have you found this to be the case at your table? That is to say: have PCs that wanted to avoid damage been able to do so? In the games I play in or run, I've not found that to be the case. Damage can be focused on one or two PCs, but everyone feels some of the pain. I...

D&D 4E How long are your 4e combats taking, real time?

Making combats more difficult in 4e is no problem at all. Just add hp, attack bonuses, extra powers, AC, synergies with other monsters in th' group....the list goes on and on. Making combats more difficult - by definition - will make them longer. What's more of a problem - and I've yet to see...

D&D 4E How long are your 4e combats taking, real time?

Wow. I'm amazed at how many people are claiming their combats take less than an hour. Incredible. I'm currently playing in two different groups (different people in each). One of them is DrSpunj's excellent game. Combats in these groups (balanced party, level 3 APL in each) takes 2 hours...
