Free RPG day Ebberon Black Ooze escape

You might want to re-read the OP before you post something like this. Not only was the DM supposed to be using RAW ("Free RPG Day"), but the poster is posting here because the battle was NOT fun.

Surrender != death (Forked Thread: Intimidate in combat)

Agreed. It's just a lot of fun for nearly everyone when a PC choice to "do right" isn't the easy choice. I've DMed quite a few of those choices, and it's those times that are talked about around the gaming table when we reminisce about old war stories. "Remember when we had to chose between...

I *think* that it doesn't work because the moves are still occuring on a turn other than the OA guy's turn, therefore he still gets to make OAs. I could be wrong.

    Feat question

Yep! Are sound tactics cheap? :) Concider these two things:Readied actions are often inferior to a full set of actions, given that you often must charge, and thus have only a basic melee attack. You also lose your place in initiative. There are plenty of ways to describe cinematicly how this...

    Rules for selling gems?

....but some people just love to roll dice! If you try to build a "haggling system", you've got some hurdles:The game is balanced with certain loot values in mind. Depending on your system, you might end up giving the PCs too much gold, or too little. PCs skill checks go up each level....why...

KD: I don't think that works. Instead, have the bad guys *all* ready an action to go as soon as Mr. Spitting-Cobra Stance attacks. Since the bad guys then go during Mr. Spitting-Cobra Stance's turn, he can't make opportunity attacks against them.

Free RPG day Ebberon Black Ooze escape

A Feymire Croc is a 10th level creature! Given that the PCs were 2nd level, I think it's safe to assume 10th level creatures (and their powers) are out-of-bounds. Swallowing is out. Look over the Gelatinous Cube. The "Black Cloud" we're discussing is pretty clearly a re-skinned 'Cube.

Free RPG day Ebberon Black Ooze escape

This creature looks like it was (essentially) a re-skinned Gelatinous Cube. If so, and the "Engulf" power reads the same, then your DM was wrong. The "Living Darkness Spell" had grabbed the invoker, and the grab combat move specifically says: ✦ Effects that End a Grab: If you are affected...

There's a reason the spell "Detect Evil" was taken out of the game..... :)

Surrender != death (Forked Thread: Intimidate in combat)

Agreed. I think a cool story-arc would start with "...so the demon surrenders to you...."

Surrender != death (Forked Thread: Intimidate in combat)

FWIW, I sincerely hope I haven't implied you are a freak. That's a "YMMV" comment, eh? :) Try to avoid blanket statements like these. They don't help. It would be helpful (I'm bring serious) if we brain-stormed a list on this, for DMs of all stripes to use. Alignment is not a "big deal" in...

Surrender != death (Forked Thread: Intimidate in combat)

True! But that's where you took it, so ...<shrug> FWIW, the "original point" was: I'm not sure if that's the "real" debate, but ...it's an interesting discussion. You've said executing surrendered foes is Evil. What are the consequences of this? Alignment has been largely removed from...

Surrender != death (Forked Thread: Intimidate in combat)

<chuckle> "It's clearly...." is often not as clear as you would suppose. Kinda like common sense not being very common. ;)

Surrender != death (Forked Thread: Intimidate in combat)

I think you might find this exists more on the internets than in a face-to-face game. ;) Still, I've always found it best -when I'm the DM - to be as clear as I can be about how I interprete the rules. That goes for lax or strict rules interpretations, etc; you don't have to be a rules-lawyer...

    HELP! Avenger issue

Perhaps the gods realized they were giving away too much AC goodness, but the earlier-time period classes had air-tight contracts, and so couldn't be voided. Later clients (Clerics, Paladins) had poorer contracts, as the gods had learned their lesson and hired better contract lawyers.

Surrender != death (Forked Thread: Intimidate in combat)

Ask the original thread OP. ;) The entire point of his PC build was to cause monsters to surrender. Since 4e is exception-based design, and since the descriptions of demons and devils don't include the phrase "immune to surrendering" (or fear, or charm, or whatever), then the OP would...

Surrender != death (Forked Thread: Intimidate in combat)

Neat! I do that in my games too...and the players usually HATE it => just hate it with a passion. I agree! (FWIW) .....and there are some who would disagree, and say that the only monster option is surrender, and the only way to surrender is to drop weapons, fight no more, and meekly obey...

Surrender != death (Forked Thread: Intimidate in combat)

Interesting discussion! How would anyone know? Isn't it usually the case that all enemies engaged in battle fall in battle? As a general question to everyone: "Do you find that at least one enemy escapes from most battles? Or are they all killed?" Bluff doesn't allow a PC to remove an enemy...
