    D&D 5E (2014) Strategies for Big Parties

Speaking as someone who's run 8 (now down to 6)... 1) To achieve the feel of any give "challenge" level in the DMG, use the value for the next level up. 2) Ignore the CR "synergy bonus" when building encounters. Just use the straight XP values. (And yes, those bits of advice stack.) 3) Bump...

D&D 5E (2014) Enhancing "Rise of Tiamat" (Practical stuff to try at your table!)

Jotunmoot Here's the Jotunmoot, extracted from my FG module. If you spot any problems or mistakes, let me know.

I had to resort to Google. 1) I'd never seen that video (heard the song, of course) 2) I always forget he wrote that book. Not mice. Here's the hint: English Rabbits.

I knew that would give it away. And the other was/is, indeed, EfNY. Your latest is throwing me. I'm sure its in the horror genre, but the setup doesn't feel right. Next one: A village leader and his prophet brother approach the party; they've been chased from their homes (and their village...

Propose a D&D adventure secretly based on a TV show or movie, and we'll try to guess what show

Now it clicked. Dumas! The Three Musketeers! Why? You get to kill the bloody things in the adventure. Is this not good? ;) For the current one: The bodies all have circular marks (about the size of a gold piece) on all their bare skin. New one: The princess has been kidnapped! The villains...

Propose a D&D adventure secretly based on a TV show or movie, and we'll try to guess what show

Nope. Though it'd fit, I suppose. (Ditto for Nausica of the Winds as well). But neither were what I thinking of. Admittedly, I took a few liberties and flipped the protagonist and antagonist roles to make it a player-character-friendly adventure. Here's a hint: The druid alchemist has a tabby...

Propose a D&D adventure secretly based on a TV show or movie, and we'll try to guess what show

Matrix. A druid/wizard alchemist approaches the party with a problem. He thinks he's managed to locate the source of the taint that's been ... changing... the forest animals. Unhappily, some unusually small (diminutive) fey have built their village in the same location. The fey however, are...

D&D 5E (2014) Enhancing "Hoard of the Dragon Queen" (Practical stuff to try at your table!)

Since I had my players coming in from the north (Lost Mines to HotDQ), I revised the entire Greenest(Greenrest?) to Castle Naerytar (i.e. Ep. 4) trek. In the revision, the Waterdeep/Neverwinter road is in *much* worse repair, requiring the caravans (in both directions) to travel with road crew...
  10. GuardianLurker

    HotDQ advice? (spoiler)

Easy spots to insert her in HotDQ: Castle Naerytar (reporting the debacle to Rezmir), the Hunting Lodge (seeking support from one of Rezmir's rivals, i.e. Talis), the town next to Skyreach (buffing the Cult's presence). Spots in Rise of Tiamat: Death in the Council (supporting cast...

D&D 5E (2014) Enhancing "Rise of Tiamat" (Practical stuff to try at your table!)

I suspect they'll notice. I suspect they also won't care. The primary reason they're in those cities is access to research materials. So I might move Neverwinter's to Luskan. Right now, I'm planning on just having it be a seduced/blackmailed secretary, not any of the actual council members...

D&D 5E (2014) Enhancing "Rise of Tiamat" (Practical stuff to try at your table!)

Already abusing the h*** out of that for other hooks, including most of the established quests. The only "urban" quests in the published material are The Tower, and Mission to Thay, and both of those are a stretch. The "Death at the Council" subquest would certainly qualify, but isn't detailed...

    D&D 5E (2014) Rise of Tiamat - Question from a DM - spoilers ahead

:erm: Well, as soon as I have it written, yeah. Those sentences were in the present tense for a reason. What I can tell you right now is that the Thayan portion keeps a large portion of the "tour of the Realms", but tightens the focus to the Sword Coast. For instance, one of the Thayan...

    D&D 5E (2014) Rise of Tiamat - Question from a DM - spoilers ahead

I agree, frankly if it wasn't for the implied "tour-the-Realms" objective, going to Thay doesn't make a whole lot of sense. I'm solving this by swapping out the Thay support for Arcane Brotherhood, and then replacing Ep. 8 (Mission to Thay) with two other missions - one where the players visit a...

    D&D 5E (2014) Skyreach Castle (HOTDQ Spoilers)

If they crash it, yep, TPK. Of course, "crash it" in this means "The Castle fell straight down from its cruising height." Said cruising height is well over 200 feet up (apparently, the average cloud deck sits ~2000 feet above ground level). Of course, that's not the scenario the adventure gives...

D&D 5E (2014) Another Rise of Tiamat Question - Metallic Dragons Arise

The only implied size of the Metallic Dragon groups is that as a whole, they are suitable opposition for the Chromatic Dragons answering the Draakhorn's Call. As a reasonable guideline, I'd suggest a CR-equivalence pyramid. That is, X Young Dragons <=> Y Adult Dragons <=> 1 Ancient Dragon...

D&D 5E (2014) Signs that you've been adventuring too long

    48. You've stopped beating up Chuck Norris because it's boring. 49. You've had to sort your "People Seeking My Aid" queues into 3 - "Time Travelers", "Prophecy Fulfillment", and "Letting my apprentices deal with it" 50. When you meet _[Supremely Powerful Opponent]_, you describe your...

    D&D 5E (2014) Different sizes of elementals in 5E?

The Summon/Conjure Elemental refers to the creature type, not the creature name. Which is why the spells also have CR limits. Thus "small elemental" == "mephit".
